In a crowded Seattle neighborhood, a plumbing contractor crew discovered the tusk of an ice age mamm
In the crowded south Lake Union neighborhood where Amazon.com workers go out for espresso, an ice age mammoth died 10,000 years ago and remained until Tuesday, when a plumbing contractor crew uncovered its tusk.
It's the latest example of the state fossil: the Columbian mammoth, Mammuthus columbi.
Monique German, who directors a early education center next door said, So our two-year-old children have all been looking through the window with a great deal of excitement starting to research the ice-age and enthusiastically follow what's happening outside.
Millennia before Seattle was founded, prehistoric animals wandered around what is now Lake Union and the lands covered by the university and the headquarters for online retailer Amazon.com.
Construction has been constant in recent years in the South Lake Union neighborhood, which also features biotech companies and apartments and condos for thousands of workers.
Similar tusks from the extinct relative of the elephant have been found in Washington, and a tooth from a mammoth even was found at a construction site at the university.
Paleontologists with the University of Washington hope to move the tusk to the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in time for public viewing at its annual Dino Day on March 8.
The Burke Museum was waiting for approval from the property owner Wednesday to excavate the site and perhaps see if there are more buried bones.

Nimitz Docks
The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) shifted from its homeport pier at Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton to a dry dock at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, Bremerton site, March 1. This shift is part of the ship's scheduled 15-month docking planned incremental availability (DPIA) period following a six-month deployment to the U.S. 5th and 7th Fleets. Nimitz will receive upgrades and renovations to a variety of systems to include steering components, hull preservation, combat systems equipment, aircraft elevator doors, berthing areas and a new stern dock. This will be the ship's most recent upgrade since its last maintenance period from January 2015 to October 2017. Nimitz is slated to return to sea May 2019 to perform sea trials in preparation for future operations. (U.S. Navy video by Paul Seeber/Released).

The unseen face of meth use
What does a meth user look like? You’re probably not picturing Courtney – and that’s one reason why it’s so important to hear his story.
In the 1990s and early 2000s, meth became the most widely used illicit drug among urban gay men. Early characterizations of the meth problem in the gay community depicted the party boy or the middle-class white man as the prototype of the meth user, says Dr. Perry Halkitis, professor of applied psychology, global public health, and medicine at New York University.
Public health campaigns in the early 2000s targeted white gay meth users as a way of combating the AIDS epidemic. This, Halkitis believes, created a stigma among middle- and upper-class white gay men and pushed the drug underground in the gay community. And while Halkitis says meth use is still common among all subsets of the gay population, a recent study of his found meth now disproportionately affects HIV-positive and African-American gay men.
To make this short, filmmaker Spencer Macnaughton spent weeks of chatting online with many men and attending a Crystal Meth Anonymous meeting at New York's LGBT Community Center, where 38 gay male ex-meth users shared their recovery stories. 17 people arrested honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Trident submarine base at Bangor, WA
120 people were present at the demonstration commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the gates of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor on January 19th. 17 demonstrators were arrested at the highway entrance into the base.
At 2 PM on Saturday, demonstrators walked from the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action to the entrance of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.
After a vigil for peace at the base, six demonstrators entered the highway on federal property, walking arm-in-arm toward the base while singing We Shall Overcome. At the same time, five other demonstrators blocked the highway entrance to the Trident submarine base while holding a banner with a statement by Dr. King which stated, When scientific power outruns spiritual power, we end up with guided missiles and misguided men.
After the eleven demonstrators were arrested by Naval Base security, six other demonstrators blocked the highway entrance to the base with a banner which stated, Abolish Nuclear Weapons. The six were arrested by Kitsap County Sheriffs.
Demonstrators also hung a large banner over the entrance to the Trident submarine base which stated, Share the Dream of a World without War.
The Trident submarine base at Bangor is located 20 miles west of Seattle. It is the last active nuclear weapons depot on the West Coast and is the place of deployment for approximately 1,360 nuclear warheads. Another 1,000 warheads are stored on the base in inactive reserve. The Trident base at Bangor has the largest stockpile of nuclear warheads in the United States.
Those arrested by Naval Base security: Jon Bowers, 24, and Sophie Siemion, 19, of Bremerton; Fr. Bill Bichsel, S.J., 79, of Tacoma; Ann Kittridge, 50, of Quilcene; Jack Fogelberg, 48, of Auburn; Nicole Scott, 22, of Shoreline; Gemma Borys, 27, and Susan Borys, 58, of Vaughn; Kerry Fitzpatrick, 51, of Gig Harbor; Gabrielle LaValle, 41, of Lynnwood; and David Damstrom, 61, of Seattle.
Those arrested by Kitsap County Sheriffs: Larry Kerschner, 61, of Pe Ell; Joy Goldstein, 72, of Vashon; Kathryn Poole, 43, of Sedro Woolley; and Rev. Anne Hall, 62, David Hall, 61, and Glen Milner, 56, of Seattle.
The eleven demonstrators arrested by Naval Base security were booked and released. One demonstrator, Fr. Bill Bichsel, was issued a federal citation for trespass, 18 USC 1392.
The six demonstrators arrested by Kitsap County Sheriffs were booked and later released in Port Orchard. Demonstrators were told they may be charged with attempted disorderly conduct, with a maximum 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Please see attached Fact Sheet
Fact Sheet
17 people arrested honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Trident submarine base at Bangor is located 20 miles west of Seattle. It is the last active nuclear weapons depot on the West Coast and is the place of deployment for approximately 2,364 nuclear warheads. The base has been recently rebuilt for the deployment of the larger and more accurate Trident D-5 missile system. Each of the 24 D-5 missiles on a Trident submarine is capable of carrying eight of the larger 455 kiloton W-88 warheads (each warhead is about 30 times the explosive force as the Hiroshima bomb.)
Naval Submarine Base Bangor currently has nine Trident D-5 missile submarines.
The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action was founded in 1977. The center is on 3.8 acres adjoining the Trident submarine base at Bangor, Washington. The Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action offers the opportunity to explore the roots of violence and injustice in our world and to experience the transforming power of love through nonviolent direct action. We resist all nuclear weapons, especially the Trident submarine system.
The next planned nonviolent direct action at Bangor will be in honor of Mother's Day in May 2008.

Time lapse footage of the Tacoma Narrows bridge enveloped in the fog. The scene was shot from the Fox Island pier with a Canon xti at six second intervals for an hour and a half in the early morning. The fog burns off to show a nice sunny sumer day. The tide seems to change direction as seen by the movement of the kelp in the Puget Sound.

Seattle Ferry Ride to Bainbridge Island
Riding the Washington State Ferries from Seattle to Bainbridge Island is one of the most scenic and affordable day excursions. Not only do you get amazing views of the Seattle skyline, but Bainbridge Island is also very pleasant to walk around.
The trip takes just thirty-five minutes. The round-trip fare for adult passengers is just $8.50 (2019). It's a great alternative to a Seattle Harbour Cruise! You can take your vehicle if you wish. However, the town centre on Bainbridge Island is within walking distance of the ferry terminal.
There are two routes operating from Seattle Ferry Terminal to Bremerton and Bainbridge Island. The route from Seattle to Bainbridge Island is the busiest in the Washington State Ferry network with 6.4 million passengers annually.
The Seattle to Bainbridge Island route is operated by the MV Tacoma and the MV Wenatchee. They are both classified as Jumbo Mark II class vessels, the largest in the WSF fleet. Each is capable of carrying up to 2,500 passengers and 202 vehicles at a speed of 18 knots. They are also the second longest double-ended ferries in the world, built between 1997-1999 at Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle.
One amenity that I truly enjoy aboard the Washington State Ferries is the on-board galley and cafeteria, which serves up popular Washington State products including:
-Molly Moon's Homemade Ice Cream
-Tim's Cascade Style Chips
-Ivar's Acres of Clams Chowder
-Beecher's Mac and Cheese
-Whidbey Island Ice Cream Bars
Overall, the Washington State Ferries operate 10 routes serving 20 points around Puget Sound and Canada. It is the largest ferry system in the United States and fourth-largest in the world with a fleet of 23 vessels carrying 24 million passengers annually.
Enjoy your Bainbridge Island Day Trip! It is without a doubt one of the most popular day trips from Seattle. The Seattle Ferry Terminal is located at 801 Alaskan Way. Be sure to take advantage of the Seattle Free Waterfront Shuttle service that offers a stop within walking distance of the ferry terminal.
