Exploring the Big Sur Coast on Stand Up Paddle with Brent Allen Outside
I have been looking at maps of the Big Sur Coast for a couple of years and did a recon paddle in sea kayaks in 2014 with friend Stephen Donahue from Monastery Beach (just south of Carmel) to Garrapata Beach and back. We don't have a very big window of calm seas to embark on these types of adventures , so 8/23/2015 we(Brent Allen and Harry Deisroth *15 years old) launched from Monastery Beach and paddled 18+ miles down the Big Sur Coast and finished at the little sur river. The north end of the Big Sur Coast line does not offer many places to go a shore . This section of coast line is riddled with rock outcroppings ,steep cliffs , short notice fog banks, and a NW wind that will have you committed to going south. . August seems to be the one month that offers the opportunity to see this location on (Stand Up Paddle).
FYI Andrew Molera State Park in Big Sur would be the best stop location. The biggest section that sends you out in the channel is the Point Sur Lighthouse,, it would be wise to get around this early when the winds are at the lowest point. Note : saftey do not plan on cell phone reception -best to have marine radio. 8/5/2016 2nd Annual Point Lobos Stand Up Paddle Kelp Bed clean up
8/5/2016 was the abbreviated version of the Brent Allen Outside 2nd Annual Point Lobos Stand Up Paddle Kelp Bed Clean Up. Taking Stand Up Paddle Boards into whalers cove and bluefish cove to remove floating plastics and trash from the kelp beds .
These areas of water are a primary pupping location for Harbor Seals each year and trash is swept around the Monterey Peninsula directly into the north side of Point Lobos.
This all began several years back when ever I had paddled to this location I always found plastics floating on the kelp and would put it on my board and discard when I came back.
In 2015 I decided to request the support of the local surfrider chapter in Monterey . I did SUP training sessions with the surfrider team prior and got a permit to do the first clean up 8/7/2015
It was awesome !! I Immediately applied for a 2016 permit to expand to 10 boards. The Soberanes Canyon Fire in Big Sur had shut down all the area state parks. So I cancelled the 8/5 session . Low and behold the park opened back up 8/2 . I had 2 great individuals coming up anyway . Myself , Clarke Graves of calipaddler.com , and Phil DiGirolamo (SUP instructor with REI) pulled out a solid mix of all types of floating plastics.
This Harbor Seal greeted us as we returned with milk crates of trash . Clarke had pulled a fish basket from the kelp and this seal was smelling lunch ! This is just a simple example of basic ocean stewardship paddle board -bungee cords -trash bags .The simple goal to bring awareness and leave the ocean better than you found it .
The Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary is an incredible ocean environment and we will continue to do the work and share the message - Brent Allen Outside Carmel ,CA
The 1st Stand Up Paddle Board Kelp Bed Clean Up Surfrider Monterey Chapter & Brent Allen Outside
Stand up paddle boarding is the fastest growing water sport in the world. In February of 2015 I met with Alison Goss of the Surfrider Foundation Monterey Chapter about doing a clean up from Stand Up Paddle Boards . One of California's most beautiful coastal state parks Point Lobos gets windblown plastics and trash pushed into its northern side (Kelp beds) Whalers Cove and Blue fish Cove.
After months of planning and doing SUP training sessions with the Surfrider Crew we finally made it happen 8/7/2015
