Bridges in Japan Japanology
The Akashi Kaikyo Bridge was completed in 1998 and connects the city of Kobe on the mainland of Honshu to Iwaya on Awaji Island. It is the 4th tallest bridge in the world and at almost 4 kilometres in length is the world’s longest suspension bridge. It spans the Akashi Strait (Akashi Kaikyo) a dangerous waterway that often experiences severe storms. There is a Bridge Exhibition Center at the foot of the Kobe side of the bridge that provides excellent information about the bridge as well as other suspension bridges around the world.

The Magnificent Akashi Kaikyo (明石海峡) Bridge, kobe city, Japan
Akashi Kaikyo (明石海峡) Bridge is the largest suspension bridge in the world and it is located in Japan.
The total span of the Bridge is 3911 meters and the bridge is completed in early 1998. The bridge is used to connect the Main Island of Japan (from Kobe city side) to the Awaji Islands over the Akashi Strait. Since Akashi Strait is an international waterway, the bridge has to be really high. In addition, any construction of this size in Japan has to withstand massive earthquakes. All these variables combined make this bridge an engineering marvel and an architectural masterpiece.
I do not want to bore you with other statistics related to the bridge (wikipedia has a bunch of them), please enjoy the video of the bridge.
If you are traveling around Kansai region such as Osaka or Kyoto, please make a trip to Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, you will not regret it.

Sorakuen is a traditional Japanese landscape garden situated in the center of Kobe. The garden used to be part of the residence of Kodera Kenkichi, a former mayor of Kobe. It was opened to the public in 1941.
All the buildings, which had originally stood in the garden, were burnt down in the war, except for a stable. The Hassam House, the former home of a foreign trader, was moved into the Sorakuen Garden from the Kitano district in 1961.

Tawain Plane Crash: Rescue and recovery after TransAsia plane crash
Read the article here:
Video shows a plane hitting a taxi and part of a highway before crashing into a river in Taipei, Taiwan. CNN's David McKenzie has the latest.
---
A passenger plane clipped a bridge and plunged into a river in Taiwan on Wednesday, killing at least 31 people, according to the island's official news agency, CNA.
Rescuers scrambled to pull survivors from the submerged wreck of the ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft, which went down shortly after takeoff from Taipei, the Taiwanese capital.
Fifty-eight people were aboard TransAsia Airways Flight GE235 when it veered out of control as it flew to Kinmen, off the coast of the Chinese province of Xiamen.
The toll: 31 confirmed dead, 15 injured and 12 missing, officials said. The search and rescue effort continues. Two other people, who were in a car on the bridge that was clipped by the wing of the plane as it went down, also were injured.
The plane's pilot and two co-pilots were among those confirmed dead, authorities said.
Crews later recovered the aircraft's black boxes, said CNA, the island's official news agency. The flight data recorder and voice data recorder were found in the tail of the plane, Ang Xingzhong, the executive director of Taiwan's Aviation Safety Council, told the news agency.

8. GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE, USA
San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, which was opened over 81 years ago on May 27, 1937, is arguably the most recognizable bridge in the world. Spanning a one-mile-wide strait known as the Golden Gate, which links the Pacific Ocean to the San Francisco Bay, the historic suspension bridge connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County, California, via U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 1.
7. AKASHI-KAIKYO BRIDGE, JAPAN
At a total length of 12,831 feet (or 2.43 miles), the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge, also known as the Pearl Bridge, is the world’s longest suspension bridge. Completed in 1998, the suspension bridge links the city of Kobe, located on the Japanese mainland of Honshu, to Iwaya, on Awaji Island.
6. PONT DU GARD, FRANCE
Built by the Romans halfway through the first century A.D., the Pont Du Gard is part of a 50-kilometer-long aqueduct that supplied water to the city of Nimes, formerly known as Nemausus. The tri-level, 5o-meter-high monument, which is constructed of soft yellow limestone blocks, carried water across the Gardon River.
5. TSING MA BRIDGE, HONG Kong
This is the world’s largest rail-carrying and bi-level suspension bridge. It is also the eleventh longest suspension bridge in the world. Completed in 1997, the Tsing Ma Bridge is named after the two main islands it connects, Tsing Yi and Ma Wan. Its main span measures 4,518 feet in length and is 676 feet high.
4. HANGZHOU BAY BRIDGE, CHINA
The 35-kilometer-long Hangzhou Bay Bridge is located in the eastern coastal region of China and connects the municipalities of Jiaxing to the north and Ningbo in the south, in Zhejiang province. At 22 miles, or 36 kilometers long, it is the longest trans-oceanic bridge in the world. Opened in May 2008, the $1.7 billion dollar bridge is expected to have a lifespan of 100 years.
3. MILLAU VIADUCT, FRANCE
At 1,125 feet high, the Millau Viaduct is the tallest bridge in the entire world. Ranked as one of the greatest engineering feats of all time, it even received the 2006 Outstanding Structure Award from the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering.
2. THE CARAVAN BRIDGE, TURKEY
Most of the bridges on today’s list either currently held a world title or did at one point. The Caravan Bridge stakes its claim to fame as the Guinness Record holder for world’s oldest known bridge. Completed in 850 BC, the bridge is located in Izmir, Turkey, and spans the river Meles. The single-arch, slab stone bridge is inconspicuous and simple.
1. SIDU RIVER BRIDGE, CHINA
Last, but not least, is the Sidu River Bridge in China, which is the world’s second-highest bridge. The 4,009-foot-long suspension bridge is situated in the mountains of the Sichuan Basin in Badong County of the Hubei Province. Spanning Sidu River Valley, the bridge stands about 1,640 feet above the bottom of a gorge.

Japan Travel: Kobe City Museum large art collection, Hyogo045 Moopon
The Kobe City Museum was opened in 1982, combining the collections of the Kobe Archaeological Museum with Namban Art Museum into a single one. The museum's permanent exhibition features an interesting collection of maps from various regions and eras of Japan, and also artifacts representing Japan's exchange with foreign countries from earliest cultural imports from China and Korea to trading goods that entered Kobe after its port was opened to foreign trade in the 19th century.
The museum also has one of the world's largest collections of Namban Art (Southern Barbarian Art), a Japanese art style that developed out of the first contacts with Western trade ships (which came to Japan from the South) in the 1500s. The rotating exhibits include colorful paintings and folding screens which depict scenes of early Japanese contacts with foreign traders and missionaries or were affected by European art design.
The museum also holds temporary special exhibitions on a limited time basis.

Sakurayama Hachiman-gû, Takayama, japan, 高山 | Canon 80D | Virtual Trip
The Shinto Shrine Sakurayama Hachiman-gû is located north of Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The origin of this temple dates back to legend in the fifth century. From the seventeenth century, it took its current form and became an important sanctuary of the city. Apparently Hachiman-gû is visited by about 1.5 million people every year. This temple seems unmissable especially for the visit of its two museums, one of which contains copies of the tanks used for matsuri, the famous festivals of Takayama, among the most beautiful and famous of Japan. The temple is about 20 minutes walk from the train station, exactly 1.3km.
A little away from the historic district and the center of the city, the visit is all the more pleasant since despite statistics and once past the old city, there are more people once there. The sanctuary consists of two museums, some temples and wooden structures. A small Shinto shrine is also higher up the hillside at the end of a long staircase. A large torii gate indicates the entrance to the temple and the whole is quite nice, without being exceptional either.

Japan's Crazy Desert Revealed: Tottori Sand Dune Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Yes, Japan has a desert compete with camels, sane dunes and ... a world class art museum with sand sculptures! This time, John heads to this barren wasteland devoid of vending machines for a taste of the Sahara – in Japan.
100,000 years ago, this area turned into a desert because sand flew in from the sea accumulating over many millennia. The result is a 16 km by 2 km wide desert that was growing until about 50 years ago when the city residents decided enough was enough.
MORE HISTORY:
After World War 2, a barricade was built to prevent tsunami and residents planted trees to stop the desertification. Now the desert area is shrinking and because of its uniqueness and lure for domestic and international tourism, the residents no longer want to stop it. In fact, 6000 volunteers in 2015 come out every few months to put pull out the vegetation all in the name of ecology!
History and problems aside, this place rocks!
50 meter high sand dunes overlook the beautiful Sea of Japan to the horizon.
THE SAND MUSEUM:
I didn't just come here for the sand dunes.
The SAND MUSEUM is a world class art museum produced by Chaen Katsuhiko who tells us his story and the reason why the Tottori Sand Dunes are so special in the world today.
Indeed, it's become a center of sand sculpting with a massive indoor enclosure housing dozens of sand sculpture displays created by guest artists from around the world and a place of pride for the city to Tottori.
Every year THE SAND MUSEUM has a major theme with new designs, reusing the sand to make a new world for visitors. This year's theme is South America and it's history with a special emphasis on Rio DeJanaro which hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
