The bridge was build in 1943 by Allied Prisoners of War as part of the Death Railway from Bangkok to Rangoon, Burma.

After the surrender of Singapore in World War II, a unit of British soldiers was marched to a Japanese prison camp in western Thailand. They are paraded before the camp commandant, Colonel Saito, who informs them of his rules; all prisoners, regardless of rank, are to work on the construction of a bridge over the River Kwai to carry a new railway line to invade Burma.
The round shaped truss spans are the originals; the two trapezoidal replacements were supplied as war reparations from Japan.
The Bridge on the River Kwai is a 1957 British-American World War II film directed by David Lean based on the 1952 French novel The Bridge over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle.The film was filmed in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
The film achieved near universal critical acclaim, winning seven Academy Awards (including Best Picture) at the 30th Academy Awards, and in 1997, this film was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and selected for preservation in the United States Library of Congress National Film Registry. It is widely considered to be one of the greatest films of all time.
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery is the main Prisoner of War cemetery associated with victims of the Burma Railway. It is located on the main road through the town of Kanchanaburi, Thailand
It was designed by Colin St Clair Oakes and is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
There are 1,896 Dutch war graves, the rest being from Britain and the Commonwealth and
there are 6,982 former POWs buried there, mostly Australian, British and Dutch.

The railway line was meant to transport cargo daily to India, to back up their planned attack on India. The construction was done using POWs and Asian slave laborers in unfavorable conditions. The work started in October 1942 was completed in a year. Due to the difficult terrain, thousands of laborers lost their lives. It is believed that one life was lost for each sleeper laid in the track.
At the nearby Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, around 7,000 POWs, who sacrificed their lives in the railway construction, are buried. Another 2,000 are laid to rest at the Chungkai Cemetery.
Allied Forces bombed the iron bridge in 1944. Three sections of Bridge River Kwai were destroyed. The present bridge has two of its central spans rebuilt. The original parts of the bridge are now displayed in the War Museum.
The Bridge River Kwai became famous all over the world, when it was featured in movies and books. The cliff-hugging tracks and the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains and valleys are well captured in the David Lean movie.
Bridge River Kwai is a tourist destination now. The track is developed into a walkway with side platforms. This allows crossing the railway bridge on foot. These platforms are useful as viewpoints and for avoiding trains. A small tourist train runs back and forth across the bridge.
Every year, River Kwai Bridge Festival is organized to mark the Allied bombing on November 28, 1944. Spectacular light and sound show is the highlight of the festival.

You can get your tickets at Thonburi I would get there around 730am grab your ticket, get a coffee and catch the train. Its an entire day trip really cool experience and you come right back to Bangkok just in time for dinner.

Bridge Over the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi, Thailand
This bridge was the inspiration for the 1957 Academy Award Winning Movie 'Bridge on the River Kwai'. The movie depicts the poor conditions under which mostly, Dutch, British, and Australian POWs as well as local Thai and Burmese labored under the Japanese during WWII to construct The Burma-Siam Railway linking Ban Pong, Thailand with Thanbyuzayat, Burma. Construction began in 1942 and was completed in 1943. Many POWs and local workers lost their lives during the construction under the deplorable conditions. At this site in 1943, there were two bridges: one temporary made of wood and this one made of steel and concrete. Both bridges were destroyed by Allied aerial bombing in 1945. The steel and concrete bridge was repaired and is still in use today with the angular trusses in the middle replacing the original curved trusses destroyed by the bombing. The replacement trusses were provided by the Japanese as war reparations. Thanks to Bangkok Day Tours and my guide 'Bo' and driver Tong for a wonderful morning at the bridge.

Thanks to several films and books, the Bridge on the River Kwai has become notoriously famous and attracted both Thais and foreigners to the site. If an ordinary black iron bridge can tell a story, you can be sure it's a dramatic one. The bridge spans across Maenam Kwai Yai which is a branch of Maenam Mae Klong.
During the Japanese occupation of Thailand in World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army brought the iron bridge from Java. It was then resembled by Allied Prisoners of War (POW) under Japanese supervision. The bridge was part of a strategic railway route to Myanmar in which the Japanese aimed to secure supplies with which to conquer other western Asian countries. It was 415 kilometers long (about 303 kilometers in Thailand and about 112 kilometers in Burma) and passed through the Three Pagoda Pass in Sangkhlaburi District, the northern most part of Kanchanaburi province.
Construction started on September 16, 1942 at Nong Pladuk, and was completed on 25 December 1943. It is estimated that over 16,000 POWs from England, Australia, Holland and America died while building the bridge which was a target of bombing raids in 1945. In addition to this, approximately 90,000 laborers from Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia died during its construction. Rebuilt after WWII, the bridge is still in use today with the curved portions of the bridge being that of the original.
An attraction of note is the annual light and sound event at the bridge to commemorate the Allied attack in 1945.The railway currently ends at Ban Tha Sao or Namtok Station, a distance of some 77 km. from Kanchanaburi Station. A Short History on the Death Railway.
The Death Railway is, in short, a horrendous part of Thailand’s history that was created by the blood and sweat of WWII prisoners of war and Asian slave labourers.
The death railway, in short, was a massacre of prisoners of war by the Japanese forces in World War 2
During WWII, the Imperial Japanese Army had taken over South East Asia and captures tens of thousands of prisoners of war, which would be used to support their war effort.
One of the big projects that these POWs were to work for was constructing a railway. It originated in Thailand and went across to the Burmese to help with the Japanese invasion of India.
Originally called the Thailand-Burma Railway, it earned the nickname “Death Railway” because over 100,000 labourers died during its 16-month construction between 1942 and 1943.

The Railway Bridge in Kanchanaburi Thailand over Kwai River
The famous bridge which goes across the Kwai River and the beginning of the 'Death Railway', which lies 1km outside the town of Kanchanaburi, is a poignant reminder of the thousands of prisoners of war and forced laborers who lost their lives in the Second World War. The building of the bridge in 1943 was one part of a huge Japanese wartime project to link existing Thai and Burmese railway lines to create a direct route from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) in an effort to support the Japanese occupation of Burma. Thousands of prisoners of war and laborers died in the process.
Visitors don't have to pay any fee to crossing the bridge. There are lot's of food stalls and restaurants close to the bridge. From Bangkok you can get to Kanchanaburi by Bus, Minivan or by a tour operator. Accommodation are available in all price categories (List of recommend Hotels further down).

We left hotel by 6:45 am to visit all historical places as a part of full day Kanchanaburi River Kwai tour including elephant trekking, bamboo rafting and lunch. We left Kanchanaburi by 4 pm and came back to our hotel by almost 6:30 pm due to heavy traffic in the Bangkok city.

DEATH RAILWAY: After entering the Second World War in Dec. 1941, Japanese forces quickly overran most of South East Asia. In 1942, in order to find a shorter and more secure line of supply between Burma (Myanmar) and Siam (Thailand), the Japanese decided to user prisoners of war and civilian labour to build a single line railway to link existing railheads at Thanbyuzayat in the west and Ban Pong in the east. Two forces, one based in Siam and one in Burma, worked from opposite ends of the line, meeting at Konkuita in October 1943. The project cost the lives of approx. 15,000 prisoners of war and 100,000 civilians as a result of sickness, malnutrition, exhaustion and mistreatment.
All the heavy work was done manually either by hand or by elephant. The men worked from dawn until after dark and often had to walk many kilometres through the jungle to return to base camp for getting treatment by Allied doctors. They were subject to extreme violence, torture, physical punishment, humiliation and neglect.
KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY contains the remains of 6,982 Australian, Dutch and British war prisoners who lost their lives during the construction of the Death Railway. Another war cemetery about 2 km south of town on the Kwai River that contains 1,740 remains (1,379 British, 313 Netherlands, 42 Malayan & 6 India). It was the site of a base camp, a hospital and a church built by the prisoners themselves.
JEATH WAR MUSEUM inside Wat Chai Chumpion has been constructed in the form of an Allied Prisoner of War camp. The bamboo huts contains photographic, pictorial and few memorabilia dating the World War II. JEATH stands for Japan, England, Austrialia, Thailand and Holland the primary nations which participated in local action.
