In the early days of the United States’ entry into World War II, the Navy was woefully under-manned, under-shipped, and under-gunned. The Atlantic seaboard was especially vulnerable to German submarines, whose attacks took a major toll on the U.S. merchant fleet, killing thousands and sinking nearly 400 ships. The Germans called it the “Great American Turkey Shoot,” and North Carolina’s Outer Banks was dubbed “Torpedo Alley.”
What the U.S. lacked in naval protection, Great Britain could offer, so a fleet of English ships and seamen crossed the pond to help out while the American Navy ramped up production and recruitment. ...

Tribute to The British Sailors Buried in The Ocracoke, NC British Cemetery
HMT Bedfordshire was an armed naval trawler in the service of the Royal Naval Patrol Service during World War II. Transferred to the East Coast of the United States to assist the United States Navy with anti-submarine patrols, she was staffed by a British and Canadian crew. Bedfordshire was sunk by the German U-boat U-558 on 11 May 1942 off the coast of Ocracoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, with the loss of all hands.

OCRACOKE, N.C. - Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum conducted the annual British Cemetery Memorial Services in Buxton Thursday and in Ocracoke Friday.
The graveside ceremonies included a 21-gun salute to commemorate the loss of British and Canadian sailors from the H.M.S. Bedfordshire and the British merchant vessel San Delfino. The crewmen's bodies were recovered from the waters off Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island after the ships were torpedoed by German U-Boats in 1942.
The Bedfordshire and the San Delfino were working with the Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy to protect American shipping lanes, where U-boats had been sinking oil tankers important to the war effort.
Representatives from the Coast Guard, the British Royal Navy, the Canadian Navy, the Friends of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, and local high school students participated in the event.

The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.

Ocracoke is a village on Ocracoke Island, part of North Carolina's coastal Outer Banks region. The landmark 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse overlooks the village and Pamlico Sound. Set in an early 1900s house, the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum traces the island’s history. Nearby, the tiny British Cemetery contains the graves of WWII sailors. Silver Lake is dotted with boats, and shops and restaurants line its harbor.

A site of one of the many civil rights controversies, the fence separating all white Elmwood Cemetery from all black Pinewood Cemetery was removed in January 1969. With the removal of the fence between Pinewood and Elmwood, the Elmwood Cemetery complex became, essentially, one burial ground. Roads now connect the two cemeteries -- although the Ninth Street entrance is still open, visitors can walk or drive through either entrance and access Elmwood and Pinewood. With over 150 years of funerary art and cultural, economic, and social history in its shady, lush acreage, the Elmwood Cemetery remains a significant part of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County.

God's Acre - Salem Moravian Graveyard, NC
God's Acre, located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina has become the traditional name given to the graveyards of Congregations of the Moravian Church. In between God's Acre is the Salem Cemetery so you can visit two historic cemeteries in the same area.
Moravians believe strongly in equality, even in death; therefore, every stone in a God's Acre is a recumbent stone with the same proportions and made of the same material so that no one person stands out among the stones. The Communion of Saints is continued even on the graveyard as it reflects the continuity of the congregation. In addition, the deceased are buried by choir; to the Moravians, these were the living groups into which the Congregation was originally divided to meet the needs of the members according to their age and station in life. Originally men and women sat in their choir groups in church at worship. The burial by choir in God's Acre also reflects the way the members of the congregation sat as a worshipping community so that visually and symbolically the Congregation continues in the graveyard.

The German U-boats stationed off the coast of the North Carolina during World War II were extremely successful in early 1942. The unique, offshore environment gave them a distinct advantage and they were able to wreak havoc on the merchant ships that travelled along the busy shipping lanes off of the Outer Banks. The area soon became known as Torpedo Junction because of the hundreds of ships that were sunk there.

PORTSMOUTH, Virginia -- The Coast Guard and the crew of the Navy's USS Cole transported three people on November 10, 2013 from the 38-foot sailboat Wings, approximately 210 miles offshore of North Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew hoisted the three people from the sailboat Wings and dropped them off on the USS Cole. The Jayhawk helicopter crew then flew to another call. The Story of the U-85
The Battle of the Atlantic during World War II occurred right off the shores of coastal North Carolina. German U-boats, including the U-85, patrolled the waters off the Outer Banks waiting for Allied targets to cross their path. On April 13th, 1942, just after midnight, the U-85 was only miles from the Bodie Island Lighthouse when it came in contact with the USS Roper.
