Hong Kong Revolution: Geopolitical & Financial Implications for China and the World | David Webb
Subscribe to Hidden Forces and gain access to the episode overtime, transcript, and show rundown here:
In Episode 98 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with famed Hong Kong investor David Webb, an outspoken critic of China’s authoritarian grip over the coastal territory.
There are two parts to this story that we explore during this conversation. The first deals with Hong Kong – specifically, its political and economic future as an independent territory of mainland China. The second deals with China itself – specifically, its political and financial stability as the most leveraged economy at scale, in the world.
The events in Hong Kong over the last several months – exacerbated by Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s determination to push through the Extradition bill despite mounting opposition – have created a terrifying sense of crisis and disorder in the city. Videos of police beatings and retaliatory violence by protestors, as well as satellite images of what appear to be armored personnel carriers and other vehicles belonging to China’s paramilitary People’s Armed Police, have created an ominous sense of foreboding in the city. One country, two systems, maybe the fault line upon which the tectonic forces shaping China’s political and economic development are colliding, creating mountains of civil unrest among Hong Kongers. At what point do the political tremors in Hong Kong become civic earthquakes capable of shattering the fragile peace between these two irreconcilable systems? Will open society prevail in Hong Kong, or will China do whatever it takes in order to reassert control over the former British colony?
In the second part of this conversation, David Webb shares his insights from his decades of experience studying the Chinese economy and investing in Chinese companies listed in Hong Kong. Those insights include a discussion about China’s overleveraged banking system, an overvalued RMB, and a system of Ponzi financing for Chinese companies listed on non-mainland exchanges. David Webb also contests a thesis famously put forward by hedge fund manager Kyle Bass about the precarious position of Hong Kong’s currency and the risk of decoupling with the US dollar. Additional topics include a new “tech cold war,” China’s propaganda battle, the US-China trade war, and much, much more.
There is no overtime to this week’s episode on account of some technical constraints. Instead, we have made the transcript to this conversation available to Overtime subscribers, which will be published in the next day or two. First Opium War - Conflagration and Surrender - Extra History - #4
The Chinese attempt to retake Canton by force failed. New British commanders took charge and would accept nothing less than total Chinese capitulation. They captured cities all the way up to Nanking, forcing the Emperor to negotiate. He had no choice but to accept an unequal treaty, kicking off a period of subservience to Europe which China still remembers today as the Century of Humiliation.

____________
Disappointed in the treaty, the Daoguang Emperor replaced Qishan with three new commanders. One of them wanted to buy time and modernize the army, but the Emperor insisted the British be repelled immediately. They assaulted Canton from across the river, firing cannons and sailing fire ships at the British fleet. Their efforts fell far short, and soon the British controlled the river again. The Chinese were forced to pay them an indemnity to leave Canton, but in their wake riots and looting plagued the city anyway. Elliot still led the British forces, but upon returning to Hong Kong, he learned that he was now being replaced. His replacements had no interest in the compromises he'd tried to establish. They pushed immediately towards Beijing. In each new fort they captured, they found evidence that the Chinese resistance had ironically been weakened by crippling opium addiction. As the Chinese attacks grew more desperate, British retaliation grew more brutal. Finally, they stood ready to seize Nanking. With it would come control of the Yangtze River on which all of China depended, so the Emperor was forced to negotiate. They had no bargaining power, and gave the British nearly everything they wanted: a huge indemnity, new trade ports, no more Hong monopoly, generous tariffs, consulates, and sovereignty over Hong Kong. The only two matters they refused were Christian missionaries and legalizing opium, but the latter would only lead to the Second Opium War with similar results. These unequal treaties would go down in Chinese history as the beginning of what the Communist government later called The Century of Humiliation. The spectre of this shame and forced subservience to European interests continues to shape politics today, as this history is often invoked or used as a rallying cry during dealings with the West.

Sun's attempts to found democracy in China were thwarted by the chaos of the authoritarian warlords who still stayed around. Dholera SIR | AECOM | Dholera | smart city |98916050605 | Property |9350881908
Dholera SIR is basically a growing smart city within the boundaries of Ahmedabad. The Dholera SIR development project has gained great importance in short span of time just because of its ultimate features and benefits. This development project is completely enjoying the assistance of the federal government and comprises of capability for the personal segment contribution.
The Dholera SIR project has been taken as the first smart city which is completely designed as per the international infrastructure. This smart city would be a great example of modern city of India, with six lane expressway running between the city from the state's biggest city Ahmedabad and capital Gandhinagar respectively, to the container port. It would be biggest infrastructure development projects in India worth $12 billion. It is an ambitious project and the dream of both central government and Gujarat government. Still, there are a lot of changes that will take place in the same to make it one of the best smart cities of India. It is really a well-planned city in every term.
Amount Of Area For Dholera SIR Project Development
DSIR Smart City Map
Gujarat is all set to get another well-planned location with the Dholera city. On the area of 900sq kilometers, Dholera is going to be a big smart city. The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) is aiming to build around 6-8 smart cities across the nation in the coming 5 years - Dholera within Gujarat, Indore-Mhow within Madhya Pradesh, Manesar-Bawal within Haryana, and also Dighi and also Nasik-Igatpuri within Maharashtra. If we talk about concentrating on achievement, then the Dholera spends around four years for the same using four-lane roads and broad-gauge course.
In this smart city, around three hundred sq kilometers of land have been obtained for the same purpose.
DMIC is normally nevertheless to settle on such technologies, even if most of the people keep the ideas which make the way into such locations in the subsequent 10 years. With the help of modern technologies, the DSIR project tries to show the modern India. It uses better technologies to fill this place with great facilities. A few of the best things about The same are:-
Transport :
nearly all flow nodes in most of these towns are now being meant to constantly be inside simply twenty a couple of minutes concerning strolling via housing and commercial enterprise places. DMIC initiatives are developing educate and shuttle bus circulates systems in step I, and mild-weight train internal in further levels.
DSIR Development Plan
Electricity :
electricity may be predicted to power an amazing a part of the modern locations, together with a first-rate deal extra decentralization than has completed with Indian native places today. Present blueprints include image voltaic at the side of cold water facilities, biomass centers, charging stations and so forth. This infrastructure could make a shrewd grid required.
Homes and Towers Since the challenge is at an early on phase, constructing pattern is just not yet phase of the approach, even though you could count on sustainability to be the hub of all structures. Trend abounds inside towns around the arena. The object makes use of sun panel era for those its electricity desires, accumulates in addition to the stores: having recycling in which possible: rainwater with regard to 100 days to weeks, makes present rooms, and many others.
These are some unique functions that DMIC add to Dholera development looking forward to a better future.
Guaido rallies hundreds in Venezuelan city
(26 Apr 2019) Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guido rallied hundreds of supporters on Friday in the Venezuelan city of Maracay.
Guaido has embarked on an international campaign to topple the socialist administration of President Nicolas Maduro amid deepening social unrest in a country plagued by food, power and water shortages.
Guaido was greeted by hundreds of cheering supporters.
He stood on a vehicle and waved at the masses of people who came out to greet him while waving signs and flags.
One sign read: There is no turning back, we will be free.
Guaido declared himself Venezuela's interim president back in January.
The US and more than 50 other governments view Maduro's re-election last year as illegitimate and have recognized Guaido as interim president until new elections can be held.
The regime thinks that they are going to intimidate us, Guaido told the crowd.
Today, Maduro is defeated, he said.
Maduro has accused Guaido of sabotage and plotting a coup.
But he has not moved to arrest the National Assembly leader, apparently aware that such a step could invite a backlash in the streets from opposition supporters or harsher action from the United States.
But Guaido has come under increasing pressure in recent weeks.
Officials have jailed his chief of staff, Roberto Marrero, and accused him of involvement in a terrorist scheme to overthrow the government.
Maduro's government also barred Guaido from holding public office for 15 years for allegedly hiding or falsifying data in his sworn statement of assets.
The opposition leader, however, has drawn masses of Venezuelans into the streets and garnered broad international support, demanding Maduro give up rule of the crisis-wracked nation.
Maduro blames Washington of attempting a coup to overthrow him and install Guaido's puppet government aimed at seizing Venezuela's vast oil reserves.

Heather Lee on Chinese restaurants, immigration, and labor history in the U.S.
Today there are more Chinese restaurants than the combined total of McDonald’s, Burger King’s, Wendy’s and KFC chains. This talk tells the story of Chinese restaurants in the United States through immigration and labor history. The industry emerged directly from Chinese Exclusion (1882-1943), a body of U.S. immigration laws barring new migrants and preventing those already in the country from naturalizing. In circumventing immigration laws, the Chinese developed a system of orbiting capital and labor. This is a story of the resilience of racialized working-class immigrants who managed to become taste makers despite the weight of state-sanctioned oppression on them. But it also is one that shows how underpaid, overworked, workers made it possible for American across the United States to enjoy Chinese food cheaply.

Duncan Clark: Alibaba: The House That Jack Ma Built | Talks at Google
An engrossing, insider’s account of how a teacher built one of the world’s most valuable companies—rivaling Walmart & Amazon—and forever reshaped the global economy.
In just a decade and half Jack Ma, a man from modest beginnings who started out as an English teacher, founded and built Alibaba into one of the world’s largest companies, an e-commerce empire on which hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers depend. Alibaba’s $25 billion IPO in 2014 was the largest global IPO ever. A Rockefeller of his age who is courted by CEOs and Presidents around the world, Jack is an icon for China’s booming private sector and the gatekeeper to hundreds of millions of middle class consumers.
Duncan Clark first met Jack in 1999 in the small apartment where Jack founded Alibaba. Granted unprecedented access to a wealth of new material including exclusive interviews, Clark draws on his own experience as an early advisor to Alibaba and two decades in China chronicling the Internet’s impact on the country to create an authoritative, compelling narrative account of Alibaba’s rise.
How did Jack overcome his humble origins and early failures to achieve massive success with Alibaba? How did he outsmart rival entrepreneurs from China and Silicon Valley? Can Alibaba maintain its 80% market share? As it forges ahead into finance and entertainment, are there limits to Alibaba’s ambitions? How does the Chinese government view its rise? Will Alibaba expand further overseas, including in the U.S.?
Clark tells Alibaba’s tale in the context of China’s momentous economic and social changes, illuminating an unlikely corporate titan as never before.
Duncan Clark was raised in the United Kingdom, the United States, and France, and has been based in Beijing since 1994, after four years as a technology investment banker with Morgan Stanley in London and Hong Kong. He first met Jack Ma in 1999, and worked as a consult with Alibaba in its early years. In 1994, he founded the leading investment advisory firm BDA China. An expert on China’s Internet sector, Clark has been invited to Stanford University as a Visiting Scholar, where the co-founded the “China 2.0” research program. He lives in Beijing.
