Pleasure House Point & Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach
A beautiful little run through #PHP and around the #BEC in #VBVA!
As the last large, undeveloped waterfront property on the Lynnhaven River, Pleasure House Point was saved and permanently protected by a community-wide conservation effort led by local residents and conservation groups, the City of Virginia Beach, the Trust for Public Land, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF). The Brock Environmental Center allows CBF to continue this partnership ethic—providing office space for a local conservation group and offering meeting space for community organizations, while providing environmental education for students and teachers from across the region.
Guided tours of the Brock Environmental Center are available by reservation only, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (except holidays). Reservation requests can be made by e-mailing BrockCenterGreenTours@cbf.org or calling 757-622-1964.
Senator Tim Kaine visits CBF's Brock Environmental Center
BIG thanks to Senator Tim Kaine who came out to visit us at our Brock Environmental Center yesterday! While there, he toured our building with CBF's Christy Everett and held a roundtable discussion with Virginia's environmental leaders, including Rebecca LePrell, CBF's Virginia Director.
“This one-of-a-kind facility that is so innovative here in Virginia is the perfect place for CBF to perform its mission and also for people to come and learn about sustainability practices.” --Senator Tim Kaine

Hourigan Construction VT Fall 2013 Virtual Construction Studio
A collaboration with Hourigan Construction Company is providing Virginia Tech students hands-on experience with virtual building construction. Hourigan first collaborated with Virginia Tech in 2012, when students from the College of Architecture and Urban Studies' Department of Building Construction were invited to work with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation on the Brock Environmental Center in Virginia Beach, Va. This fall, a team of five undergraduate and graduate students will continue working with Hourigan on the project as they compare the utility of virtual construction management to traditional methods.
Throughout fall semester, the students will utilize methods of virtual construction to analyze various construction elements including clash detection, quality control and conformance, safety, and schedule adherence, discovering the various obstacles associated with virtual construction and solving problems encountered during the project's construction phases in real-time.
The term virtual doesn't make the project any less real, however. The students are working alongside the Hourigan Construction Company — a relationship that first started when the company contacted Virginia Tech to be part of the planning and implementation process for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Brock Environmental Center.
The Brock Environmental Center is a flagship building for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. It is situated on the Lynnhaven Inlet in the southern section of the Chesapeake Bay, an important estuary and critical component to the health of the bay; therefore, the most stringent green rating system available — the Living Building Challenge — was selected for the project. Chris Brandt, executive vice president at Hourigan Construction, and Andrew McCoy, an associate professor in the Department of Building Construction in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction, worked closely with the students to research and recommend solutions for the state-of-the-art construction processes needed to construct the center to meet the extremely rigid and sustainable Living Building Challenge requirements. Student recommendations for the Brock Environmental Center included a mobile photovoltaic array, electric platform lift, and small electric mobile tower crane, all of which will be incorporated into the actual site plan.

Tangier -
Tangier, Virginia is a town in Accomack County, Virginia, United States, on Tangier Island in Chesapeake Bay. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. The tiny island community has attracted the attention of linguists because its people speak a unique English Restoration-era dialect of American English. Each of the original inhabitants' surnames, many of which are still found on the island, originated in the United Kingdom;

Hourigan Construction and Virginia Tech Construction Students: The Living Building Challenge
In the Fall of 2012, Hourigan Construction Company (HCC) invited Virginia Tech's Department of Building Construction, in the Myers Lawson School of Construction, to work with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) on a Living Building Challenge (LBC) facility in Virginia Beach, VA. This facility, the CBF Environmental Center, required a focus on higher-level factors surrounding constructability, means and methods, logistics and schedule for a real, high performance building, both in its design and implementation. As a result of this partnership, HCC asked the students from Virginia Tech to research and recommend suitable solutions to the current state-of-the-art processes in implementing a sustainable construction site, solutions that meet the spirit of the LBC.

Hurricane Michael 2018 full coverage and updates
Hurricane Michael has killed at least one person as it continues to move inland over the Southeast. The storm made landfall on the Florida Panhandle Wednesday afternoon as one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the U.S. The intense Category 4 hurricane was packing maximum sustained winds of 155 mph when it crashed ashore near Mexico Beach, a lightly populated tourist town about midway along the Panhandle.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) described Michael as potentially catastrophic. Debris is strewn across miles of Florida's coastline: Roofs and awnings peeled back from buildings, pieces of homes scattered amid snapped trees and downed power lines, chunks of beaches washed away.
Follow our live blog:
Forecasters mark landfall as the place and time when the center of the eye strikes land. Minutes earlier, Michael's eyewall came ashore between Panama City and St. Vincent Island, and the hurricane center warned everyone inside the relative calm of the eye not to venture outside.
Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 45 miles from the center. Those winds were tearing some buildings apart in Panama City Beach.
One beachfront structure under construction could be seen collapsing, and metal roofing material flew sideways across parking lots amid sheets of rain.
