Broken Chair is a monumental sculpture in wood by the Swiss artist Daniel Berset, constructed by the carpenter Louis Genève. It is constructed of 5.5 tons of wood and is 12 metres (39 feet) high.
It depicts a giant chair with a broken leg and stands across the street from the Palace of Nations, in Geneva. It symbolises opposition to land mines and cluster bombs, and acts as a reminder to politicians and others visiting Geneva.
Broken Chair is an original project of Paul Vermeulen, co-founder and director of Handicap International Suisse. In October 1996 he commissioned from the artist a monumental chair of over 10 meters high, with a torn-off leg, to be installed on the Place des Nations. The objective was to get the largest possible number of States to sign the Ottawa Treaty on landmines in December 1997. The sculpture was erected by Handicap International in front of the main entrance to the Palais des Nations in Geneva on the 18th of August 1997, where it was intended to remain for three months, until the signing of the Ottawa Treaty in December 1997 in Ottawa. Hans Erni (February 21, 1909 – March 21, 2015) was a Swiss graphic designer, painter, illustrator, engraver and sculptor.
Born in Lucerne, the third of eight siblings, to a cabin cruiser engineer, he studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris and later in Berlin,[1] and admired artists such as Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
He is known for having illustrated postage stamps, his lithographs for the Swiss Red Cross, his participation on the Olympic Committee as well as his activism.[2] His 1939 works and first major public success was a mural titled Switzerland: Vacation Land of the People was commissioned and displayed for the national exhibition in Zürich.
The Hans Erni Museum, situated in the grounds of the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, contains a large collection of artwork, he also designed ceramics and theatre costumes and sets. He did the art for Swiss bank notes, in the 1940s but, after the notes were already printed they were never published, because a member of the State Council of Lucerne criticized that Erni was deemed as a communist. However, Erni was never a member of any political party. In 2004, he was awarded the honorary citizenship of the city of Lucerne. On 10 January 2009 he received the SwissAward for lifetime accomplishment. for further Info.

Les touristes qui arrivent à Genève sont surpris de voir devant l'entrée du Palais de l'Organisation des Nations Unies une chaise monumentale de 12 mètres qui pèse environ 6 tonnes, son quatrième pied est cassé. On se demande pourquoi ? Et bien cette splendide sculpture en bois symbolise le mouvement mondial contre les mines antipersonnel et à fragmentation. Dans un premier temps, elle a permis de sensibiliser et de mobiliser le public, et de faire pression sur les décideurs politiques. C'est désormais un monument qui rappelle que le monde est capable de s'unir pour régler des questions importantes dans le domaine du désarmement. La Convention sur l'interdiction des mines antipersonnel (dite Convention d'Ottawa), que 162 Etats ont ratifiée, montre comment la société civile, les ONG, les organisations internationales et les gouvernements peuvent agir de façon décisive pour un monde plus sûr et plus paisible
