The Broletto di Como is the original seat, in medieval times, of the Municipality of the city of Como. It was located next to the ancient Cathedral (which from the fifteenth century would have given way to the present-day Duomo ), signifying the strong link between the civil power of the Municipality and that of the Church. Its construction dates back to 1215 by the will of the mayor Bonardo da Codazzo .
It was built in the Gothic-Roman style while the Renaissance elements of the facade date back to the fifteenth century. The façade is in bands of Lombard marble in three different colors: white, gray and red, while the civic tower was built using the ashlar technique.
Starting from the fifteenth century the progress of the construction of the Cathedral required the cutting of two arches to the south ( 1477 ) and the closure of a portico on the same side ( 1514 ). This removal involved the separation of the municipal building into two distinct units, and commonly indicated by the citizens with Broletto the one to the west and Pretorio to the east. The level of the square was also changed, which was raised, as can be seen today by observing the base of the pillars under the portico.
Once lost its civic function the Broletto, starting from 1764 , became the seat of a theater and was later used as an archive. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw the realization of some works of reconstruction and restoration, intensified particularly in the last decade. Currently the Broletto is used as a congress hall, and for art exhibitions and city solemnities.

Como was the birthplace of many historically notable figures, including the (somewhat obscure) poet Caecilius who is mentioned by Catullus in the 1st century BCE, the far more substantial literary figures of Pliny the Elder and the Younger, Pope Innocent XI, the scientist Alessandro Volta, and Cosima Liszt, second wife of Richard Wagner and long-term director of the Bayreuth Festival.

The bright blue sky and snow-capped mountains were the perfect backdrops to the exquisite 18th – century communities sprinkled around the lake and tucked into the mountainsides. The views along the drive on the narrow, curvy road from the City of Como to Cadenabbia was astonishing. Perhaps a little bit more magnificent is the unobstructed views from the ferry across the lake to the town of Bellagio.
Como, along with all the other towns around Lake Como in Italy has become a popular tourist destination. Within the city of Como, there are numerous things to see and do inside and outside. Several works of art, parks, boat trips, ferry rides, palaces, theaters, museums, gardens, and churches to visit. Some of the most popular are the Duomo, the Villa Olmo, the Broletto, and the funicular to Brunate. The funicular climbs 2,346 ft. (715 m) above sea level to connect Como to the small village of Brunate.
