Highway 321 Lenoir, NC to Boone, NC
Took a trip to North Carolina over the weekend. This is from Lenoir, NC to Boone, NC. The road is U.S. Highway 321 North. Traffic is pretty heavy between Lenoir and Boone. Especially with several events that was taking place in both towns.
Boone, NC is home of Appalachian State University. Along with the college Boone has several tourist attractions like Tweetsie Railroad along with many stores and restaurants. One of the best restaurants in Boone is the Daniel Boone Inn. Family style dining and mouth watering food. If you have never been I would suggest that you try the Daniel Boone Inn. They are located just a couple blocks from ASU. Also the scenery is breath taking when going across the mountain.

This flight was my first flight of 2018, 152 days, 2 hrs, 10 minutes (or so) after my previous flight at Big Walker Mtn., so I was a bit rusty. Also, this was my second successful ridge-soaring flight, and first thermal-soaring flight.
This was my first attempt at in-flight commentary, using an Olympus LS-P2 voice recorder. Got the bright idea from Jonathan Dietch from SoCal ( I think the setup worked quite well. I'll have to practice completing my thoughts orally while speaking to absolutely no-one in flight. It can be lonely up there!
While on launch, we almost conceded that this flight was going to be just a simple sled-ride, down to the LZ one mile away, due to the lighter, dying winds that we felt. Once every two minutes or so a stronger cycle would come through, but didn't seem like it could sustain a long flight.
Just after launch I peeled to the right to find ridge lift. Since I was somewhat nervous, I did not hear the vario telling me I was climbing at a good clip. Not knowing the site, the visual ques didn't register any clues as well. At the far East end of the ridge, I figured I would turn and run for the LZ. After flying toward the LZ for a few moments, I reconsidered my height, and decided to try another pass along the ridge. A lot more lift that I had hoped for!
After topping-off at approximately 1000' over the launch elevation, I found some thermals to the NE of the ridge. Strong, tight-columned thermals that seemed to elude my newb thernalling skills. I got tossed around a bit, though I did manage to gain another 500' for a total of 1500' over launch, and approximately 2400' - 2500' over flat ground. My friend who helped me launch had other things planned for the evening, other than waiting around for me while I was enjoying the playground of the sky. Plus I rapidly got my fill while getting bumped around a bit, so I called it a good day and headed for the LZ after about 20 minutes of soaring. Conditions would have likely allowed me to stay aloft for at least another hour before the sun set if I had the time and fortitude.
The primary LZ has a nice, snug, up-hill slope landing area surrounded by trees. I was thinking that with the 15mph winds I was encountering at the time, and with the wind-streamers in the field hanging limp, that there would be some rotor generated by the trees on top of the hill, and likely a large wind gradient. I wanted to land as far downwind of the rotor-generators as possible (bottom of the hill), so I needed to dive over the southern bordering tree tops and get myself on the ground as fast as I could.
I probably should have positioned myself a few yards further south of the southern edge (downwind) of the LZ so that I could have cleared the trees a bit lower and landed that much further downwind. I knew I had begun my base leg a little too high, but I figured I had committed to it, and there was little room to burn off the altitude at that point without an aggressive dive. I could have dived harder, but being rusty I erred on the more conservative side.
The landing sucked. Just after I rotated from the dive to zoom up the hill, you can notice the tell-tail wind streamers showing a gust. I felt it push me up a few feet, so I grabbed the control bar with both hands and pulled in to brake my ascent. The vid doesn't well indicate what I felt. That put me behind in my transitions to the downtubes as well has getting into a vertical body position in preparation for the flare. Plus, I believe in my rusty state of mind, I was waiting for a trim condition, which will rarely happen when landing uphill. I recognized the appropriate timing too late.
Uphill landings always compress the landing sequence timing, inversely proportional to the degree of slope, and rarely mimic flat-land flare timing IE.,the steeper the slope, the shorter the timing sequence, with no neutral pitch (trim) condition encountered, at least from what I have experienced. If there is a point at which neutral pitch occurs, it is so short of a period on a Falcon that a) it is hard to feel it, b) you have completely missed the abbreviated flaring-window if you try to wait for the trim condition.
