So glad to hike again in Mindanao! Breath-taking view of the Celebes Sea, I looked south and saw the outline of Malaysian Borneo. Sanga-sanga airport can also be seen from the peak which is a perfect place to do plane spotting.

Bud Bongao: The Sacred Mountain of Tawi-Tawi
We stayed at Mam Shiela's house in Tawi-Tawi, they organized everything beforehand. And their place is so simple yet so awesome. First to visit is the Bud Bongao, we used a motorcycle to go around the island.
“Bud Bongao is an icon of terrestrial biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism in Tawi-Tawi because of the wealth of its wildlife and its unique cultural importance,” said World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Tawi-Tawi project manager Dr Filemon Romero.
The tallest of the six peaks of Bud Bongao is 342 meters above sea level, to get here you must climb the 3,000++ steps of the stairs. You'll be greeted by monkeys along the way so it's advisable to bring some bananas with you. Reaching the tallest peak is definitely worth it! The view is priceless, you can see a glimpse of Malaysia already! As you go up, you'll learn why this mountain is sacred for our Islam brothers. The best attitude to bring here is respect, and patience! Be sure to bring sun protection as it tends to get so hot at the peak. ????

Bud Bongao (Bongao Peak) in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi
Enchanted is this mountain in Bongao in the Province of Tawi-Tawi. It is said that the mountain brings good fortune and can heal ailments. These were according to the residents who climb the mountain every day.
According to the local’s adage, one cannot say he’s been to Bongao if he hasn’t climbed the Bongao Peak yet.
Even if you didn’t know anything about Bud Bongao (Bongao Peak) in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, it’ll be the first thing you’ll notice if you visit the town and thoughts of wanting to climb the mountain will come into mind right away. This dominating feature of Bongao serves as its icon, and sure enough that if you didn’t know anything about the peak before your visit if you ask a local about it, you’ll get the adage that “you’ve never been to Bongao if you hadn’t climbed Bud Bongao.”
Being the iconic tourist-and-locals-go-to for prayer, meditation or simply trekking, Bud Bongao is definitely Tawi-Tawi’s most famous mountain and eco-tourist site. It is a 315 meter tall mountain covering a lush forest of 250 hectare.
One of the thrust of Department of Public Works and Highways of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM-DPWH) is to support tourism in the region. As such, DPWH-ARMM, during its project inspections and ARMM Roadmap Community Consultations in Bongao, scaled the mountain to conduct inspection on going projects in Bud Bongao, last week.
ARMM-DPWH Secretary Don Mustapha Loong and Tawi-Tawi District Engineering Office (DEO) head, Engineer Tony Kamlani led ARMM-DPWH team to personally inspect these projects: the construction of Visitors’ Center at the foot of the mountain and the concreting of the mountain’s trail to render trekkers easier ascent. It is is a P56 M worth of project investment to support eco-tourism at Bud Bongao.
Climbing Bud Bongao is now made more convenient with the use of concrete stairs that freed locals and tourists from what used to be muddy, rocky and slippery trail scaling the mountain.
Bud Bongao is not only a must-climbed mountain that offers you a panoramic view of Bongao’s landmass and natural beauty, but also considered a sacred mountain by locals who often climb the mountain to pay respect to shrouded tampats (holy shrines) and say their prayers.
Legend has it that one of the Arab merchant Sheik Karimul Makhdum's followers was buried atop the mountain. Makhdum is responsible for preaching and bringing Islam in the Sulu archipelago and Philippines by landing in Simunul in 1380 where he built the first mosque in the country, now mostly known as the Sheik Karimul Makhdum Mosque.
Locals also bring their sick to the shrines and pray for their healing. Aside from the holy shrine, you will also notice knotted plastics, wrappers and foils of different colors and sizes adorning trees, which according to locals, represent their wishes and their belief that their wishes will come if they tied them to the trees.
On our way to the summit, we met a family of locals who are also on their way to the peak, one of them, Sittie Himpon Paradja said she was with her entire family. According to her, both the young children and staffed members of her family climb the mountain every once in a while to pray and to ask for blessings to heal sick family members.

Allow me to take you through this visual tour to the province of Tawi-Tawi, and Zamboanga. Contrary to what many people believe, these provinces are incredibly peaceful islands. Some articles about these provinces portray the islands as a bunk of bandits and its people as pirates.
It took me about five (5) months of planning and inviting friends to travel with me to these provinces. Until finally, I was able to invite fourteen (14) of my friends from different shades of life to go and experience the calmness of these islands. Here is the list of places we visited:

CHEAPEST PHILIPPINES FISH MARKET? AND WILD! - Muslim Mindanao, Tawi-Tawi
THIS FISH MARKET IN TAWI-TAWI MINDANAO COULD BE ONE OF THE CHEAPEST IN THE COUNTRY? It was surreal not only walking around and seeing what was being offered, but the prices were very cheap (compared to where I live in the Philippines).
They have unique fish, some of which I am not so sure about (could be endangered... could be dangerous... I am not 100% sure though, and am not one to judge without knowledge and understanding of local culture). Anyways, in this video you will see us visiting the fish market in Bongao Tawi-Tawi. It was pretty wild walking around and having a look at all the different things for sale... I do love the way they sell though! Traditional barter style!
After buying our fish for the day, we ended up on a boat adventure to Simunul Island. Here we visited the first mosque in the Philippines! Yes, this is the birthplace of Islam here in the country. A lot of Muslims will pilgrimage here. It was a beautiful experience. I really love connecting with my friends who are Muslim here in the country.

TAWI-TAWI BY BOAT! Travel From Zamboanga City, Philippines
Ever dreamed of travelling to Tawi-Tawi? For many people, this Province on the south western tip of Mindanao is on their bucket list. Made up of many beautiful islands... most people travel here by plane from Zamboanga.
Well, unfortunately all flights were cancelled...
So we took the boat to Tawi-Tawi!
