Elephants in Cambodia! I LOVED Mondulkiri
After Kratie, we drove to Sen Monorom in Mondulkiri, Cambodia, which is maybe the most well-known area in eastern Cambodia, famous for elephants and trekking, although very small. We stayed in the cutest hotel in Sen Monorum called the Indigenous People Lodge, owned by a Bunong woman, and also went to an elephant sanctuary called The Elephant Valley Project. This was my favorite stop on our trip!

What to do in Cambodia:
The Mondulkiri Project in Cambodia
The Mondulkiri Project is an award winning elephant sanctuary in Cambodia. They have signed an agreement with Bunong indigenous elders to rent a large area of forest close to Sen Monorom to protect it from logging. They also plan to start an elephant breeding program there soon. The Mondulkiri Project is a community project, with monies raised being used to protect the forests for their elephant sanctuary and to support the local Bunong hill tribes with employment, medicine and food donations.

Bunong Elephant Project
We at the Bunong Elephant Project strive to provide tours and elephant encounters that are ethical both to the welfare of the animals and to the indigenous communities here in Mondulkiri. In our elephant experience, visitors do not ride the elephants but do get to walk with them in the jungle, feed them by hand, and bathe them in the river. This kind of elephant encounter is very enjoyable and allows visitors to experience elephants being elephants in their natural habitat!

Mondulkiri ecotourism Bunong Elephant Tour and Nature Lodge, Sen Monorom, Cambodia
Soundtrack by Preab Sovath
Based at the nature lodge animal sanctuary which trains local people in ecotourism skills such as hotel work, cooking, English, organic farms and livestock ranching, we joined our tour guide Prek to explore the Pnong hill tribe homeland where we could walk and bathe with elephants in the valleys below the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Part 1: Mondulkiri Protected Forest (Khmer)
In 2003, WWF initiated a feasibility study for applying the highly successful Southern African approach to protected area management in the Mondulkiri Protected Forest (MPF) in Cambodia's Eastern Plains.
This documentary details what WWF and its government partners-the Forestry Administration and the General Department of Administration for Nature Conservation and Protection (the Ministry of Environment)-has achieved in MPF by laying the foundations for effective protected forest management, and shows how this approach has been used to begin supporting local livelihoods and increase community ownership of this unique and globally irreplaceable Dry Forests Landscape.
A special thanks to the Darwin Initiative and Habitat Hotels who supported the making of this documentary.

community elephants in Mondulkiri Sanctuary
Following many years of daily work in the forest & carrying tourists, they did not always been eating sufficiantly. Chellot had developed a bad limp, Chepril had a chronic inflamed hip joint. Both were also severely underweight when they first joined us. Our rescue team had been negotiating with the villagers for some time and finally, they agreed to retire both elephants in return for regular community support. They were brought to the Mondulkiri Sanctuary in 2014. Following several months of rest and vigorous feeding at the Mondulkiri Sanctuary, the two have gained a total of 729 kg. Their chronic conditions have improved immensely and their Bunong families are thrilled to see them feeling well again. They also understand now, that being free is a much better life for them, they often come visit and bless the elephants.

Again, we detoured our route chasing the majestic elephants of Sen Monorom, Cambodia. The eastern province Mondulkiri, home to the Bunong tribe, allows for nature walks with elephants in their protected forest. We met Princess and Happy Go Lucky who trekked with us into the forest and down into a waterfall. We washed & swam with the Elephants. Princess decided it would be funny to take a deuce in the water while we showered her! Over all, a memorable experience that yet again brings us closer to love and appreciate nature and all its inhabitants.

Mondulkiri Project || Mr Tree say thank you for helping him raise the money needed to buy Princess
Today the Mondulkiri Project bought Princess the elephant from 12 Bunong families who live in Memong Commune in Mondulkiri Province. Princess will now spend the rest of her life in our lovely sanctuary, far away from elephant rides and hard physical work. We are very happy that the close friendship between Princess and Comvine will continue.
A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our “Help us Buy Princess the Elephant” fundraiser. We would also like to thank all our guests who helped us with the money we needed to buy her.
With your continued support we hope to continue to rescue an elephant every year.
