Kaub staat bekend om het kasteel Pfalz, of Burg Pfalzgrafenstein, gelegen op een rots in het midden van de Rijn. Volgens de legende wachtten de graftwinsten van Palatinus op hun opsluiting in de Pfalz, maar in werkelijkheid diende het kasteel als tolpoort voor koopwaar aan de Rijn. Het gerestaureerde kasteel Gutenfels ligt op een heuvel boven de stad. Kaub, voor het eerst genoemd in het jaar 983, was oorspronkelijk eigendom van de heren van Falkenstein, in 1260 verdeelden de graven van Katzenelnbogen hun graafschap en selecteerden de inwoners van Kaub, waarna ze in 1277 naar het Rijnlandse keurvorstendom van de Palts gingen, en burgerrechten verkregen in 1324. In 1477 werd Kaub weer als storting doorgegeven aan de graven van Katzenelnbogen. In 1479 stierf dit gezin uit. Het was in Kaub dat Blücher de Rijn overstak met de Pruisische en Russische legers, op Nieuwjaarsacht 1813-1814, op jacht naar de Fransen.
Kaub is known for the castle Pfalz, or Burg Pfalzgrafenstein, situated on a rock in the middle of the Rhine. According to legend, the Palatine countesses awaited their confinement in the Pfalz, but in reality the castle served as a toll-gate for merchandise on the Rhine. The restored castle Gutenfels sits on a hill above the town. Kaub, first mentioned in the year 9 83, originally belonged to the lords of Falkenstein, in 12 60 the Counts of Katzenelnbogen divided their county and selected the inhabitants of Kaub, then passed in 12 77 to the Rhenish Electorate of the Palatinate, and attained civic rights in 13 24. In 1477 Kaub was passed as deposit to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen again. In 14 79 this family died out. It was at Kaub that Blücher crossed the Rhine with the Prussian and Russian armies, on New Years night 18 13-18 14, in pursuit of the French.

Die Pfalzgrafenstein war einst Teil einer der lohnendsten Zollstellen am Rhein. Die Lage ist spektakulär: Mitten im Rhein stehend, ist das steinerne Schiff per Personenfähre zu erreichen. Die sogenannte Pfalz kann man auf eigene Faust besichtigen. Per Audioguide erfährt der Besucher an 13 Stationen Wissenswertes zu Geschichte, Bedeutung, Bau sowie dem kargen Leben und Alltag auf der Burg.

Die Burg Pfalzgrafenstein, auch die Pfalz bei Kaub genannt, wurde von Ludwig dem Bayern, dem Pfalzgrafen bei Rhein und späteren römisch-deutschen König und Kaiser, im Rhein bei Kaub als eine Zollburg errichtet. Sie hatte die Aufgabe, die Einnahme des Schiffszolls in der gegenüber gelegenen rechts-rheinischen Zahlstelle in Kaub zu überwachen. Wegen dieser Zweckbestimmung diente die Inselburg − anders als andere Burgen am Mittelrhein − niemals zu Wohnzwecken. Das Bauwerk entstand im Lauf der Jahre aus einem von Ludwig dem Bayern 1326 bis 1327 errichteten Turm.

Kaub is een plaats in de Duitse deelstaat Rijnland-Palts, en maakt deel uit van de Rhein-Lahn-Kreis. Kaub ligt aan de Rijn en telt 836 inwoners. Een van de grootste bezienswaardigheden van het stadje is Burg Pfalzgrafenstein, gelegen op een eilandje in de Rijn.

Pfalzgrafenstein and Mauseturm
Though neither are Germany's epic castles, both Pfaltzgrafenstein and Mauseturm (Mouse Tower) are interesting in design and history. Pfaltzgrafenstein originates from the early 1300s and was built by King Ludwig the Bavarian. According to Wikipedia, the Romans were the first to build on the site of Mauseturm. The tower then went into a period of decay and was rebuilt several times, and was later rebuilt by Hatto II, the Archbishop of Mainz, in 968. The last sequence opens with the ruin of Burg Ehrenfels, which sits directly across the Rhine from Mauseturm.

toll castle Pfalzgrafenstein in the Rhine River near Kaub, Germany
This is the world famous toll castle or toll station castle of Pfalzgrafenstein which is located in the Rhine River in Germany near the town of Kaub as it appeared on June 30, 2016. I am filming this from Viking Kara on its way from Rudesheim to Koblenz during a Rhine Getaway Cruise. Thus far, this cruise was the best cruise of my life.

This is the first diorama building series on my 'Toys & Stuff' blog. The series is called Building a Memory and I hope to do more. The dioramas' will feature places I've actually been to such as the one shown in this video.
The Pfalz bei Kaub castle lies on a large rock in the middle of the Rhine River in Germany and was built as a toll booth (sort of). It's purpose was to collect tolls from boats plying the river. A large chain stretched across the Rhine and was pulled up to prevent boats from passing until they paid the toll. It lies not too far south from the city of Coblenz. As castles go it's not terribly ornate inside. This was a working man's castle, not some ostentatious rich man's residence!
The diorama itself was meant from the beginning to be a fairly simple affair using easy diorama making techniques, therefore it's not as detailed as a more elaborate scale model diorama would be.

Daten: entstanden aus einem von 1326 bis 1327 errichteten Turm.
Sonstiges: Pfalzgrafenstein gehört neben der Marksburg und der Burg Boppard zu den wenigen nie zerstörten Burgen im Oberen Mittelrheintal. 1803 kam die Burg unter Napoleon zum Herzogtum Nassau. Erst 1867, nachdem beide Rheinseiten preußisch geworden waren, verließen die letzten Zollbeamten die Insel.
