There are thousands of underground coal seam fires burning around the world. Most of them have been ignited by natural processes.

Drone over Burning Mountain near Wingen, NSW. Burning Mountain is so named because of the coal seam burning about 30m below the surface. Scientists estimate the coal seam has burned for over 6000 years.

Some Places on Earth have Been on Fire for 6000 Years!
Eternal flames are often intentionally ignited for symbolic significance. But there are also plenty of natural blazes burning around the world, some of which have been flaming for 6000 years! Here’s a hot list of 11 eternal flames that just won’t quit!
1. Chestnut Ridge Park, New York
It’s a bit of a mystery how this eternal flame keeps alight behind a pretty waterfall in Shale Creek Preserve. Native Americans set it aflame thousands of moons ago, but how it sustains is anyone's guess.
2. Smoking Mountain, Ethiopia
One of the driest and hottest places on the planet! A rare geothermal balance keeps the magma molten, resulting in a pool of glowing liquid fire!
3. Eternal Fire of Baba Gurgur, Iraq
This extensive oil field has been blazing for over 4000 years! Some scholars believe this was the “fiery furnace” referenced in the Bible.
4. The Gates of Hell, Turkmenistan
This destructive inferno has been raging for 40 years now. The 200 feet hole was created in a Soviet industrial accident that exposed an underground cavern of methane gas.
5. Smoking Hills, Canada
This land of fire and ice is where enormous deposits of lignite spontaneously combust. It was discovered in 1828 by Sir John Franklin.
6. Olympos Mountain, Turkey
Said to be the inspiration for the Chimaera monster, it has been used as the mountain’s natural lighthouse for over 2000 years to help sailors navigate the rocky shores. Methane gas seeping up through the rocks is what fuels these fires...
7. Water and Fire Cave, Taiwan
You’d think the surrounding H2O would extinguish this inferno but methane gas bubbles through cracks in the rock and even the running spring can’t quell these eternal flames. It’s been burning for at least 300 years.
8. Fire Temple of Baku, Azerbaijan
This has been ablaze for centuries, often mentioned in ancient texts. Even Marco Polo made reference to this fiery phenomenon when he passed through the region in the 13th century.
9. Centralia Coal Mine, Pennsylvania
This now abandoned gas reservoir sparked in 1962 and despite attempts to put out the fire, it continues to smoulder and cause faults in the ground to this day. The town was condemned in 1992.
10. Burning Mountain, Germany
This seam of coal in Saarland, Germany ignited in 1688. No one really knows how it started. Steam can be seen and heat can be felt emanating from the rocks.
11. Mount Wingen, Australia
This continuously blazing underground coal field makes the landscape glow like a burning mountain. It may be the world’s oldest perpetual coal fire, with some estimates claiming it’s been aflame for over 6000 years!

➠ The Door to Hell
The Door to Hell
Soviet geologists were drilling at the site in 1971 and tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas.
But the ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a hole with a diameter of 70 metres.
Fearing that the hole would lead to the release of poisonous gases, the team decided to burn it off.
The hole is located in Derweze, in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan
It was hoped that the fire would use all the fuel within days, but the gas is still burning today.
The flames generate a golden glow which can be seen for miles around Derweze, a village with a population of about 350.
The site is about 260 kilometres north of Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.

The kids had it rough this time, ha ha ha, we brought the Wii with us on vacation. We were camped off Hwy 504 below Mount St. Helens at the Mt St Helens RV Resort. They wanted to play just dance and had a great time. the space was limited, but that was OK with them. The ramp was lowered to allow air flow and increase space to dance. This was probably the 10th song and they were getting tired, but even without controllers, they all played. Recorded using the Flip HD
