Georgetown Heritage C&O Canal Boat Tow Out
The Georgetown canal boat provided fun and educational tours to school groups and tourists for nearly 30 years, before being decommissioned in 2011 due to extensive damage. In 2016, Georgetown Heritage and the Park Service removed the old boat in preparation for the first phase of canal restoration work. Georgetown Heritage received a grant from the District of Columbia to fund the design and construction of a new boat, which will be delivered in Spring 2020.

The Monocacy Aqueduct
An Icon of American Civil Engineering
Construction of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal began in 1828 in Georgetown, District of Columbia, and reached its terminus in Cumberland, Maryland, in the summer of 1850. The C&O Canal system included eleven stone aqueducts designed to carry the canal across the major river tributaries that drain into the Potomac River along the canal's route. Today, the C&O Canal is the most intact canal resource of the 36 major canals constructed in the United States between 1806 and 1850. The C&O Canal's chief engineer, Benjamin Wright, is considered by many as the father of American Civil Engineering. He was the lead engineer on the Erie Canal prior to engineering the C&O Canal.
The Monocacy Aqueduct is the largest of the eleven aqueducts erected along the C&O Canal, and is often described by many historians as one of the finest canal features in the United States. Ten of the eleven aqueducts remain as key features of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, which was designated as a National historical park in 1971. The Catoctin Aqueduct collapsed after its piers were gradually undercut and a flash flood took it down in 1972.
Construction of the Monocacy Aqueduct began in 1829 and was completed four years later. Three separate contractors labored on the immense stone structure, which was constructed for $127,900. The plan for the Monocacy Aqueduct, often referred to as C&O Canal Aqueduct No. 2, was for a stone masonry structure with a waterway of 19 feet at the bottom and 20 feet at the top. The towpath parapet wall is 8 feet wide and the upstream wall is 6 feet wide. Benjamin Wright drew the plans with 6 piers, 2 abutments and 7 arches, each with a span of 54 feet. The piers are 10 feet thick with pilaster at each end. The aqueduct is 516 feet in length. Much of the building material was large granite stone blocks quarried at the base of nearby Sugarloaf Mountain.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located in the District of Columbia and the states of Maryland and West Virginia. The park was established as a National Monument in 1961 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in order to preserve the neglected remains of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal along the Potomac River along with many of the original canal structures. The canal and towpath trail extends from Georgetown, Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Maryland, a distance of 184.5 miles (296.9 km), and was designated as the first section of U.S. Bicycle Route 50 on October 23, 2013.[2][3]
Construction on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (also known as the Grand Old Ditch or the C&O Canal) began in 1828 but was not completed until 1850.[4]:1 Even then, the canal fell far short of its intended destination of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Instead, the canal terminated at Cumberland for a total distance of approximately 184.5 miles. Occasionally there was talk of continuing the canal, e.g. in 1874, an 8.4 mile long tunnel was proposed to go through the Allegheny Mountains,[5] and there was a tunnel built to connect with the Pennsylvania canal.[6] Even though the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) beat the canal to Cumberland, having arrived eight years earlier, the canal was not entirely obsolete. It wasn't until the mid 1870s that through improved technology, specifically with larger locomotives and air brakes, the railroad was able to set rates lower than the canal, sealing its fate.[7]

USA: FLOOD WARNINGS POSTED ALONG THE ENTIRE POTOMAC RIVER
Natural Sound
The legacy of Hurricane Fran lives on as the Potomac River flooded in areas of Washington DC and western Virginia.
Flood barriers were put up around buildings in the low-lying areas of Washington's Georgetown as water inundated streets and Virginia's Great Falls Park.
Flood warnings were posted along the entire swollen Potomac River, whose high waters were pushing towards the US capital.
Normally the water at Great Falls, Virginia, is viewed from platforms at least 40 feet above. Today, the water had risen to cover the overlook -- and continues to rise.
The National Park Service has closed many parks, trails and roadways near the river around the Washington area.
At Great Falls, flood waters are expected to reach at least 4 feet above the 1996 mark shown here.
In Washington, water was rising above the river barriers and onto roads. Officials have warned motorists to take extra care and many roads have been closed.
With the water not expected to recede quickly, the warning already has been extended well into Monday.
Early Sunday afternoon, the fashionable Georgetown, where the flood stage is seven feet, water was 11.4 feet deep.
Forecasters warned that the flooding could turn out to be worse than the region saw in January, when the winter storm meltdown swamped the area and caused heavy damage.

SUMMARY
=======
The Potomac Heritage Trail, also known as the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail or the PHT, is a designated National Scenic Trail corridor spanning parts of the mid-Atlantic and upper southeastern regions of the United States that will connect various trails and historic sites in the states of Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. The trail network includes 710 miles (1,140 km) of existing and planned sections, tracing the outstanding natural, historical, and cultural features of the Potomac River corridor, the upper Ohio River watershed in Pennsylvania and western Maryland, and a portion of the Rappahannock River watershed in Virginia. The trail is managed by the National Park Service.Unlike many long-distance hiking trails such as the Appalachian Trail, the Potomac Heritage Trail is a general route with numerous side trails and alternatives, some in parallel on each side of the river. Currently, many of these are separate, connected to the others only by roads. Potomac Heritage Trail: A Hiker's Guide is a guidebook addressing the PHT's various sections, and some intervening or adjacent areas. The C&O Companion guidebook is useful for this major section of the PHT.
The PHT crosses another National Scenic Trail – the Appalachian Trail – near Harper's Ferry, West Virginia. The PHT also coincides with the American Discovery Trail along the portion of the C&O Canal Towpath from Oldtown, Maryland, to Washington, D.C.
Two action packed days of Richmond Railfanning! December 8th & 12th, 2017
Over the course of two days in the Richmond area in December of 2017, we managed to shoot quite a variety of trains, as well as locations around the state capitol.
We would start both days around Acca yard, work our way down to the Fulton area on the C&O, and then end the evenings back at Acca.
Lots of great power that you won't see these days, as well as a few trains that have since been abolished make videos like this that much more enjoyable in 2019!
Hope Everyone Enjoys!
