Renovation revitalizes Beijing's hutongs
Hutongs are narrow lanes lined by siheyuan courtyard residences. As a unique part of Beijing's culture, they stand as witnesses to the history of the city, and China, too. Is maintaining them as historical relics the only way to preserve the hutongs? Can they be restored to meet modern needs, and if so, how? Japanese architect Shuhei Aoyama will share his insights.

Modern Chinese architecture in Beijing the CCTV Building
For my birthday I traveled to Beijing to get a feel of China before moving. I saw some wonderful sites. One of the many interesting buildings was the CCTV Building designed by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeran and completed in 2012. It is the Head quarters for China Central Television.
Inside the Oldest Hutong District in Beijing, CHINA
When I came to Beijing, I was curious about how and where Chinese people lived in the past? Not only I decided to stay in one of Beijing's hutongs but also took the pedicab around the intricately twisted lanes to admire the old courtyards and experience the life of ancient Beijing. After decades of decay, hutong life is getting harder. In the last 20 years, Beijing has doubled in size to 20 million residents. The newcomers in the capital need homes jobs and conveniences that traditional hung life just can't supply but experts say that rapid urbanisation should still preserve the past.
In the same way that Forbidden City is the symbol of China's royal family; the winding hutongs in Beijing represent the way of life of the common people. Some may even say that the real culture of Beijing is the culture of the hutong and courtyards. In Beijing, hutongs are alleys formed by lines of 'siheyuan'. In Chinese, 'Si' means 'Four' which refers to four sides: east, west, north and south where 'He' refers to surroundings, meaning the four sides circle into a square. Due to its special layout, it is compared to a box with a garden in the centre. There is only one gate leading to a hutong, so when the gate is closed it is easy to lose touch with the outside world. In such an environment, family members can fully enjoy the tranquillity and share the happiness of a peaceful family union. On the other hand, many neighbourhoods were formed by joining one siheyuan to another to form a hutong and then joining one hutong to another making it easy for local people to keep in touch with their neighbours. Once you enter any of the lanes, you can feel deep and warm relationships among people.
Hutong is a Mongolian word meaning water well. In the past, Beijing was composed of hundreds of courtyards around the Forbidden City, and these lanes stretched out in all four directions, connecting the different kinds of courtyards in the city. Since the mid-20th century, the number of Beijing's hutongs has dropped dramatically as they were demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. More recently, some hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history. The data can further explain the severe reality. According to research, Beijing had 3,050 hutongs in 1949, 2,250 in 1990 and only a little over 1,300 in 2004. Together with the Forbidden City, it is regarded as a symbol of old Beijing. However, with more and more being destroyed day by day, the old city is disappearing.

The Houses Where China's Babies Are Abandoned
In an attempt to provide refuge for the 10,000 babies abandoned in China every year, Chinese authorities are funding “baby hatches”—tiny houses where parents can dump their unwanted children, no questions asked.
Across China, 10,000 babies are abandoned every year, often on the side of the road. One out of three of those left on the street die. Now authorities have launched a radical experiment to rescue at least some of these tossed-aside tots. Baby hatches, 32 of which are dotted throughout China, serve as safe houses for parents to abandon children they feel they can't or simply won't raise themselves. And while these pastel-colored hatches may look like dollhouses, the babies placed inside are all too real.
The baby hatch in Jinan, China, is painted bubblegum pink. Cartoon cats and clowns drawn on the façade appear cheerful, but the parents who come to abandon their babies are anything but. Holding the child for the last time, the parent approaches the hatch and presses a button on the outside of the building to anonymously alert an on-site nurse. The room inside is empty—save for an infant’s scale and an incubator where the parent leaves the child. Once the parent has left the premises, a nurse retrieves the child and brings it to a nearby orphanage.
As part of our collaboration with MSNBC, Vocativ went to Guangzhou, China, to meet some of the parents who chose to use the baby hatch. Families tend to do so anonymously, but Lai Li, the father of a deformed little girl, was willing to speak up. In an interview with Vocativ, he says, “When my child was born, the doctors told me: ‘Your child was born with cleft palate and shortened legs, and our hospital does not accept this type of child.'” Many of the Chinese parents who abandon their children do so because their child is sick and they cannot afford proper care. “I have no money to raise my child, he says. Who can we turn to? Who is willing to help us? When you are at the end of your rope…there is simply nothing you can do.
Locals in Jinan say at least eight babies are left in the hatch every day. An estimated 1,400 babies have been abandoned since 2011 at China’s hatches.

Villa complex built on top of 26-storey apartment block in Beijing, China
A villa complex complete with imitation rocks has been built on top of a 26-storey building in Beijing. Work began on the villa six years ago and an imitation mountain and plants have been taking shape in recent months, and residents of the 26-story building have complained to the local government.
Authorities are worried that extreme weather could cause the Villa to be blown down or hit by lightening and residents fear the extra weight could cause the roof of the building to fall in.
The authorities have given Mr Zhang, who owns the flat but has never turned up to any official meetings, 15 days notice that his villa is about to be destroyed.
With the all the attention this case is getting people are coming down to take a look before the complex is demolished. Report by Genelle Aldred.
