Quad Adventure in Siem Reap, Cambodia... The Wedding!
We passed several weddings on our 4hr drive through the countryside.
Here you can see the bride, the groom and one of their mothers having an argument but managing to force smiles when they saw us! This is typical of Cambodia, full of smiles.

The first major religion to come into SouthEast Asia was Hinduism. The ancient Hindu religion has many gods and originated in India. Hindu gods include Vishnu, the supreme god and preserver of the universe, and Shiva, god of destruction and regeneration. Over the centuries, worshippers began to choose to follow only one of the many Hindu gods.
Reincarnation is a key Hindu belief. Hindus believe that a soul exists in each living thing and that performing religious duties and living a moral life leads to being born into a higher class in the next life. Hindus see their goal as the achievement of spiritual joy by eventually being united with Brahma, the universal spirit.
Ankor Wat
Jayavarman II established four capitals for his kingdom. Th e most important of these would be Hariharalaya (now called Roluos) on the northern shore of Tonle Sap (near the modern city of Siem Reap). He used wars, alliances and marriages to expand the area under his control. He built several Hindu temples. These and the temples built by his successors served as the mausoleums of the Khmer kings when they died.
Jayavarman II’s successors went on building temples and expanding the empire. Yasovarman I (who ruled from 889 to 900) onstructed a new capital called Yasodharapura and a gigantic reservoir measuring 7.5 kilometres by 1.8 kilometres in the Angkor area. In 953, Rajendravarman II (944–968) built a series of temples at Angkor, and during his reign the Khmers had their first war with Champa. Under his son, Jayavarman V (968–1001), the Khmer court became a centre for scholars and artists.
Suryavarman II
Th e decades after Jayavarman V’s death were years of fi erce power struggles among the Khmer ruling class in which kings were overthrown by their rivals. According to a Khmer inscription, Suryavarman II (1113–1150) came to power after killing a rival prince in a battle fought on war elephants. He extended the Khmer Empire by conquering Haripunchai and south-western
Thailand up to the border with Bagan. In the east and north he took several provinces of Champa and expanded north to the present southern border of Laos. Such expansion did not necessarily mean direct Khmer rule. In many places it was simply a matter of local rulers acknowledging the Khmer king as their overlord.
Suryavarman II also commenced the construction of the greatest of all the Khmer temples, Angkor Wat. It was built in just 37 years and dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. After Suryavarman II’s death, the Cham invaded the Khmer Empire in 1177, rowing up the Mekong River and across Tonle Sap (near the modern city of Siem Reap) in war canoes. They sacked the Khmer capital and killed King Tribhuvanadityavarman.
Floating basketball court in Chong Khneas, near Siem Reap in Cambodia
A floating basketball court at the floating village near Siem Reap in Cambodia.
Home to many local Cambodians, the floating villages of Chong Khneas lie along the Tonle Sap River lake system, and is eleven to fifteen kilometers outbound from the lively city of Siem Reap which is the gateway to the kingdom of Angkor Watt.
One of South East Asia's largest fresh water lakes, the Tonle Sap, is connected to the Mekong River, which starts in the Himalayas, flows down through to China, Cambodia and eventually discharges out to sea in Southern Vietnam.
The floating villages of Chong Khneas are rich with life and overflowing with culture. With more than 5,000 residents living along the waterway, in over 1300 houseboats, a trip through the floating villages enables tourists to get an up close and personal experience with local Khmers and Vietnamese who inhabit these waters in some of South East Asia's poorest housing projects.
We're full throttle, cruising at top speed past floating neighborhoods. The wind blasts through me, rickety house boats sway to the melody of our on coming waves, and the sun slowly sinks along the horizon as we continue to disappear deeper and deeper into the unknown.
I stare off into the distance, and find myself transfixed by the locals who glide effortlessly across the water. Their boats are filled with cans of soft drinks, Angkor beers, fresh fruits and souvenirs.
They slowly fight their way past motor boats full of on comming tourists and paddle towards home in their tiny tin boats after a hard day's work of selling goods to wealthy foreigners and local merchants.
The Kingdom of Cambodia has surely seen their share of hardships. From internal conflict, to genocide, the country's past has not only scarred locals with horrific memories, but has also left some struggling to make ends meet.
In Chong Khneas, poverty and strife is a daily reality for most. Not only do villagers struggle from a lack of basic facilities, but pollution, a decline in their fishing industry combined with the unwelcome onset of tourists have made life on the Tonle Sap a real struggle for some.

Khmer Mansion Residence in Siem Reap Cambodia
Our week long stay at Khmer Mansion Residence in Siem Reap Cambodia was an amazing experience. They really went the extra mile with absolutely everything. When we arrived at the airport and got out VISA on arrival, we were greeted by Chovey's friendly face just outside the terminal in the pick up area. She was holding up a Khmer mansion sign with our name printed on it. She patiently waited longer while we got our SIM cards for our phones. The driver then loaded up our suitcases. During the brief trip from the airport to the hotel Chovey gave us a run down on what to do locally as well as some historical facts. Once we arrived we were given some tasty drinks to sip as well as refreshing cold towels while we went over a few things and our luggage was taken to our room. After paperwork was signed and reviewed we were shown to our room. The elevator had an uplifting scent of lemongrass. Upon entry into our room we were pleasantly surprised to see that they had our names spelled out on the beds with carefully placed lettering made from reeds. The room was very spacious and the refrigerator stocked with water and other beverages. The balcony overlooking the pool and small courtyard area was relaxing as well. We had coffee out there every morning. We were also able to take morning walks around the city and over to pub street every morning from mansion. Here's pub street:
There were also tuk tuks (don't know if I spelled that right) readily available across the street to take us anywhere we wanted to go around Siem Reap. Breakfast was complimentary every morning. The kitchen/diner folks were amazingly gracious with customer service like no other. Breakfast started at 6 and then went to 10:-00 which was very nice because this gave you the choice of either sleeping in or eating when you return from an early morning walk. It was very nice because there was a breakfast buffet with a nice variety and also a full menu from which to order from. The menu was wonderful and I don't think there is a bad item on there. They would seat us every day, take our orders, make us nice latte's, and prepare the food quickly. The dinner here was amazing as well. We were served a complimentary 4 course dinner one night. I ordered room service dinner a couple times as well. They made a very good loke lock. I'm sure I'm spelling that one wrong as well but it was my favorite Cambodian dish. We were able to take one of the best tours we've ever taken. It was an all day tour riding motorcycles across the countryside. We were also able to have scooters delivered right to the hotel on two separate occasions. These were great to ride around and see the city as well. Our overall experience here was outstanding. I highly recommend this place if you ever visit Siem Reap.
Terrace of the Elephants (Elephant Terraces)-Siem Reap, Cambodia (With Historical Facts)
The Elephant Terraces, or Terrace of the Elephants, is part of the Angkor Thom temple complex and was used by King Jayavarman VII as a platform to view his victorious returning army about 1,000 years ago. You can also various scenes of carved court figures, elephants, and garudas (bird-like creatures). In the beginning of the video, we see an ancient celestial Hindu temple called Phimeanakas which was built by King Rajeandravarman II and rebuilt by King Suryavarman II.

Ta Prohm Temple | ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម | Siem Reap | Cambodia
Ta Prohm Temple (Khmer: ប្រាសាទតាព្រហ្ម) is the modern name of the temple at Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia, built in the Bayon style largely in the late 12th and early 13th centuries and originally called Rajavihara. Located approximately one kilometre east of Angkor Thom and on the southern edge of the East Baray, it was founded by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII as a Mahayana Buddhist monastery and university. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm is in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors. UNESCO inscribed Ta Prohm on the World Heritage List in 1992. Today, it is one of the most visited complexes in Cambodia’s Angkor region. The conservation and restoration of Ta Prohm is a partnership project of the Archaeological Survey of India and the APSARA (Authority for the Protection and Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap). One of the world famous!

ប្រាសាទតាកែវ | Ta Keo Temple, Siem Reap, Cambodia
Ta Keo had to be the state temple of Jayavarman V, son of Rajendravarman, who had built Pre Rup. Like Pre Rup, it has five sanctuary towers arranged in a quincunx, built on the uppermost level of five-tier pyramid consisting of overlapping terraces (a step pyramid), surrounded by moat, as a symbolic depiction of Mount Meru. Its particularly massive appearance is due to the absence of external decorations, as carving had just begun when the works stopped,[1] besides an elaborate use of perspective effects. It is considered an example of the so-called Khleang style.
Plan of Ta Keo
The main axis of the temple is E-W and a causeway 500 meters long connects its eastern entrance to a landing stage on the Eastern Baray, with which Ta Keo was in tightly relationship.[2] The outer banks of the surrounding moats, now vanished, measure 255 m by 195 m.
The first terrace is 122 m by 106 m, its wall of sandstone on laterite basis constitutes the outer enclosure. Along the east side there are two long galleries, whose roofs were probably in wood and tiles.[3] They were illuminated by balustraded windows.
The second terrace is 5.5 m higher. Each of the first two terraces has a gopura at the four cardinal points. Each gopura has three independent passages and a central tower with diminishing tiers.
A continuous gallery (1.4 m width) constitutes the inner enclosure of the second terrace. It has windows only towards the interior and measures 80 m by 75 m. It's really interesting, because it has no door and seems to be purely decorative, and is the first example of Khmer gallery (together with Phimeanakas). Before Ta Keo (e.g. in Pre Rup) there were long buildings that followed the length of enclosures with some discontinuity.[4] However it hasn't a stone vault, probably its roof was made of wood and tiles too.
Jayavarman V was ten years old when he succeeded his father, Rajendravarman, in 968. His early years of reign were rather turbulent and the court officials dominated the royal politics. When he was aged seventeen (in 975), he began the construction of his own state temple, whose modern name is Ta Keo, that was dedicated some time around 1000. In contemporary inscriptions it is called Hemagiri or Hemasringagiri (the mountain with golden summits).[8] It remained unfinished until the reign of Suryavarman I.[9]:135 Yogisvarapandita, a high priest who became minister of Suryavarman I and received the temple from him many years later, says in inscriptions that a lightning strike hit the unfinished building, an evil omen, so the works stopped. Maybe works stopped simply because of the death of Jayavarman V, as there was a struggle for succession. Actually the temple worked continuously as a cult center until the 13th century,[10] and even Yogisvarapandita worshipped the shrines at the first levels of the temple.
A term tightly linked to Hemasringagiri is Jayendranagari (which in Sanskrit means capital of the victorious king), the royal palace or maybe the new capital city of Jayavarman V.[11]:367[12] However the remains of this large hypothesized ensemble are very scarce. Today only a tower in the south-west survives, similar to the corner towers of Ta Keo, with an unusual single door to the south.
Khmer Set 8 Course Dinner including Amok at Angkor Palms Restaurant in Siem Reap, Cambodia
For dinner we headed off to visit Angkor Palms restaurant located in the heart of Siem Reap - just off of Pub street - to try their highly recommended platter 8 course meal set that included Amok, Mango Salad, Fried Spinach, Fresh Spring Rolls, Green Coconut Chicken Curry, Spareribs Pork, Rice and Banana Tapioca pudding for dessert along with a coconut and mango smoothie. It was a glorious feast that satisfied our taste buds and then some. Coming in at $14 for the meal and $3 for the drinks it was a pricier meal (by Cambodian standards) but having the opportunity to have an authentic Cambodian dinner with multiple courses made it well worth it in our opinion. Today we are having a feast of a dinner. We are at a Cambodian restaurant and we have just ordered ourselves an eight course meal.
This restaurant is called Angkor Palms and it is highly recommended, so we have high expectations for this meal.
Right now I am trying the fresh spring rolls and I think they have rice noodles inside, so let's see. Woah, that is a mega bite!
That was a really good spring roll. It had some very fresh and zesty flavors and a little bit of seafood as well; so far so good.
Next up, we have the spare ribs and these do look good. It just melts in your mouth.
Next up we are trying the Amok, which is one of the most popular dishes in Cambodia. Amok is fish that has been coated in a coconut cream and then baked in a banana leaf. Did it hit the spot? Um-hmmmm. And she takes a second bite before I get any.
This is the one thing that I'm probably the most excited about - the homemade green curry with chicken. I've got a slice chicken. Wow, I can really taste the curry. Once again, just like the spare ribs, it just melts in your mouth and I barely even have to chew. Is it coconut based? I don't think it is that strongly based, no.
Up next is our shaved mango salad, which has some peanuts and mint leaves on top. Sweet? It is sweet? It is also nice and crunchy because of the peanuts. It has some nice spices and is really flavorful. You just took a second bite. And last but certainly not least is the fried water spinach. That is tasty. It has kind of a butter-y garlic flavor.
Time for dessert. Tell us what you are having? To finish off we've got a sweet little treat - a tapioca based pudding with banana. Oh, take a big bite. Oh yeah, it is so sweet and so good.
We have finished our feast of a dinner. I must admit, when I first saw the platter being brought over I thought 'hmmm, is this for two people? I think I could probably eat my own but in the end we still have food leftover. That was just so much to eat. It was so tasty but it was really filling at the same time. So, it was good stuff - it was a good dinner.
The 8 course platter is $14 for two people. For those who want to come here this restaurant is located right in the heart of Siem Reap nearby the Central Market. You can't miss it.
This is part of our Travel in Cambodia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Khmer / Cambodian culture, arts, food, religion and people.
