Geopark Spain: Cabo de Gata Natural Park in Almeria, Spain (in Spanish)
Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park in the south-eastern corner of Spain, is Andalucia's largest coastal protected area, a wild and isolated landscape with some of Europe's most original geological features. It is the only region in Europe with a Warm Desert climate.
The eponymous mountain range is Spain's largest volcanic rock formation with sharp peaks and crags in red/ochre-hues. It falls steeply to the Mediterranean Sea creating jagged 100-metre (330 ft) high cliffs, which are riven by gullies leading to hidden coves with white sandy beaches, some of the most beautiful in Andalucia.
Offshore are numerous tiny rocky islands and, underwater extensive coral reefs teeming with marine life.[2] Its climate is arid to the extent of being the driest location in Europe and the continent´s only subtropical or warm desert, with rainfall below 200 mm (7.9 in) a year and average yearly temperatures above 18 °C (64 °F). In 1997 it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In 2001 it was included among the Specially Protected Areas of Mediterranean Importance. In 2010 it was proposed as a dump for nuclear waste.[3]
The name 'Cabo de Gata relates to the mineral agate which used to be mined in this area.

Le parc naturel de Cabo de Gata-Níjar se situe dans la Province d'Almería, Andalousie (Espagne).
Il occupe 29 000 ha de la partie occidentale du golfe d'Almería.
Il a été déclaré Parc naturel en 1987.
C'est probablement le seul espace de côte méditerranéenne resté vierge. De nombreuses espèces végétales xérophytes endémiques s'y rencontrent. Depuis peu, cet espace protégé est devenu un sanctuaire de la faune européenne.
Le terrain est composé essentiellement de roches sédimentaires (sables, etc.) venant des fonds marins, mais aussi de roches volcaniques se présentant de différentes façons, comme des colonnes, des bombes volcaniques...
Pour ces raisons et d'autres caractéristiques le parc est déclaré Réserve biosphère par l'UNESCO en 1997(le premier parc naturel maritime-terrestre du pays). En 1989, une partie du parc, les Salinas del Cabo de Gata ont été déclarés site Ramsar1.
Dans le parc naturel, se trouve la localité de Rodalquilar, et le Jardin Botanique de Albardinar.

Not the best video (and we'll just pass on the photo of the c.30mm long adult at the end shall we?)... but you can just about make out a larva flicking sand onto an ant in the second clip. N.B. I think the butterfly in the box was a dead specimen that I had found to ID later. (N.B. Best played in HQ)
