Glorieta de Atocha is one of the main squares in Madrid. The Atocha railway station is impressive with a modern part where the trains depart and the old station (from 1890) now converted in a green house with palms and other tropical plants. One pond is the home of many turtles. At one side of the Glorieta is the Ministry of Agriculture, in a building with an impossing facade. facing the station is the Reina Sofia Art Center, in one side of a pedestrian square and located in an old hospital from the 18th century.
In this area two streets with different character can be found: Santa Isabel street, a quiet street with old houses and some monuments like the Convent of Santa Isabel and the Palace of Fernan Nuñez. At this street is also located the Dore cinema, form the eraly 1920´s, and a traditional market. Atocha street, running parallel to Santa Isabel is a busy street full of traffic but also with some imposing buildings, most of them now hotels.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
