My Mekong Delta Cruise – Saigon (Vietman) to Siem Reap (Cambodia)
Highlights from my Mekong Delta Cruise (October 2016) from Saigon in Vietnam to Siem reap in Cambodia. Video courtesy of
The tour started with sightseeing Saigon (Ho Chi Minh), welcoming dinner etc. I added an extra couple of days in Saigon to explore other “non-touristy” areas.
From Saigon we went to My Tho where we boarded the CruiseCo Adventurer and set sail for Cai Be. The ship was extremely comfortable with private deck etc. The food was excellent and nightly performances were organised. There was only about 30 guest on the tour and they broke us into groups of two for day excursions… which was a good idea.
Next morning we visited Cai Be to see the floating markets and other local attractions. Lunch was on board the Cruiseco Adventurer followed by a visit to the village of Sa Dec.
The next day was to Tan Chau and the Border Crossing into Cambodia. We toured the town on a rickshaw and watched navigated narrow channels by boat.
The ship docked in the Capital City Phnom Penh overnight. In the afternoon we visited the Khmer Rouge’s Toul Sleng Detention Centre and the Killing Fields.
There are around 20,000 mass grave sites where at least 1,386,734 people were executed under the Khmer Rouge Regime between 1975 and 1979.
It is estimated up to 2.5 million people died from Khmer Rouge policies, including starvation and disease. That was out of a population of roughly 8 million in 1975.
Vietnam invaded Cambodia (then called Democratic Kampuchea) in 1979 and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime. A very sad history.
The next morning we explored Phnom Penh on our own by Tuk Tuk. After lunch on board the ship sailed for Chong Koh, where we visit some traditional handicraft workshops.
The next day it was on to Oudong to visit a Buddhist monastery. Then on to Kapong Tralach Pleu where we took an ox cart ride to the Tonle River. Not overly comfortable but a lot of fun!
We were lucky to be cruising in early October during the high water season so didn’t need to take the long bus trip on our journey to Siem Reap. We visited the rural port town of Kampong Chhnang and explored the busy (but dirty and interesting) markets.
The vessel dropped anchor and tied up to a tree mid-stream, so we could take a boat trip into the lake-side wetlands. The ship moored near Siem Reap.
In Siem Reap we toured Angkor Wat which is the world’s largest temple. It was stinking hot and humid but a wonderful experience.
I didn’t bother with the arranged tour of more temples the next day, but instead got a Tuk Tuk and explored Siem Reap including and visit to the War Museum which I found enlightening. I stayed in Siem Reap a couple more days to explore more of the city and surrounds.
Overall, the trip was amazing! Thanks CruiseCo.

Vietnam & Cambodia All-Gay Cruise with Miss Conception - HappyGayTravel.com
Vietnam & Cambodia Mekong River All-Gay Cruise & Tour
Two Asian nations – and a favourite drag queen – await on Out Adventure's 2020 Mekong River gay cruise. After four days at our favourite five-star hotel in Siem Reap, the Cambodian town that’s home to the legendary Angkor Wat, we’ll board a luxurious, seven-night, all-gay cruise along the Mekong River. Between marvelling at ancient cities and getting lost in time in local villages, Toronto-based diva Miss Conception will stun you with two shows, a trivia night, and private Champagne lap dances in her suite. Alright, perhaps not a lap dance – we can’t let her upstage the stilted villages, Phnom Penh, and gorgeous countryside. To round off the journey, we’ll disembark in Ho Chi Minh City, where ancient collides with modern.

Cambodia Nightlife 2016 - VLOG 70 (bars, clubs, girls)
Cambodia Nightlife 2016 - VLOG 70 Phnom Penh (bars, clubs, girls)

11:10 Heart of Darkness Nightclub
13:27 Pontoon Nightclub
16:20 Map of the places visited
Street 172
This is Phnom Penh's cheap charlie area. It is home to many inexpensive bars, restaurants, guesthouses and also has a few hostess bars thrown in for good measure.
It is a good place to find $0.50 draught beers and many expat teachers congregate here in groups for the inexpensive offerings. The food is generally good here and many restaurants do take away service for the local expats.
The hostess bars were quiet on street 172 when I visited so I never ventured in as I generally don't like being a solo customer in a bar. The Vampire bar girls were probably the best lookers from what I saw.
The first $0.50 beer of the trip was at the Rachana rooftop bar and restaurant.
Sundance Inn and Saloon.
This place is pretty solid choice with rooms starting at around $22. It's guest friendly, they have a small swimming pool at the back and a lively bar area that is good to meet fellow travellers if that is your thing.
Phnom Penh rubbish removal
This city has one of the most unhygienic methods of collecting rubbish. Piles of it left on the streets festering in the blistering heat all day long. Don't even go near a market after closing as the stench of decaying organic matter is overpowering (esp. fish markets).
Notice the guys also have no gloves on and are wearing flip flops too. Unbelievable!
$1 moto taxi ride.
I went everywhere via tuk tuk or moto taxi and never paid more than $1 for a trip. On this night I was looking for a possible future hotel and got completely lost.
Phnom Penh is not a place to wander around alone late at night, even around the tourist areas. As soon as I could I flagged down a moto taxi and hit the bars.
Street 136
On this night I went to the corner bar first which has a great view of the crossroads below. Draught beers have gone up to $1.75 and lady drinks were $3.75.
At the Red Fox Bar I played some cash game poker upstairs. I didn't stay long as I played like a donkey, losing every pot played and being down 3 figures before I made a judgement call to get the hell out of there.
Shanghai Bar
This long running bar was a must visit for me. There were around 60 girls working on this night and customers were thin on the ground. I ended up giving up on trying to film the bar area and just had a few rounds with some friendly hostesses.
There were a couple of grade A stunners at the bar that I missed and if I made a future visit I would just take one of those.
No barfines in Shanghai but also no guarantee the girl will go to your hotel room.
Walkabout Pub.
This place fell on hard times and closed on 21 Apr 2016. It was a dingy freelancer bar where my first memory was being shouted at for not paying for my drink upfront (most of the bars give you a tab to pay on leaving).
I did make a short visit to the Walkabout last year in VLOG 19 last year:
Heart of Darkness
I remember not being able to breath in this nightclub a few years ago, and it being stocked to the gills with freelancers. Now it is a shadow of it's former self and did I miss the memo that it was gay night on my visit?
Pontoon
This nightclub is now has cover charges some nights due to it's increasing popularity. I think the club is ok, but not great. There was much more security on my visit and they were hassling me a bit for taking a couple of photos which was surprising.

A Taste Of Siem Reap Cambodia
A collage of Khmer food, sights, and people from my adventure to tourist mecca Siem Reap, Cambodia. It's the town closest to Angkor Wat. --
I had so much ffffuunnnnn during my visit to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Here's a bit put together by Google Photos Auto Awesome that gives you an idea of what's up in the sleepy little French colonial town turned sophisticated tourist mecca.
There's an abundance of good, cheap, fresh Khmer, Hindu, French, and other western foods on the streets and in the restaurants.
Accommodations range from filthy dirt cheap, to extremely affordable for five star quality.
The people were super warm, outgoing, and friendly. It feels completely safe walking about alone, even at night.
Siem Reap is gay friendly! There's four gay bars, three gay saunas, and many, many, massage parlors that have both male and female massage, umm, therapists.
Once the tuk tuk drivers, masseurs, and male waiters find out you're gay, they become extremely flirty. Even though they're not.
This is just a small taste of the thousands of photos and hours of video I shot during my 11 day stay in November of 2014. I hope you check out this channel and my blog for more, much, much more, on Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Bangkok, Pattaya, Bali, South Florida, and San Francisco, California!

Are you planning on retiring to a new life in Cambodia?
Do you wish for the expat lifestyle in a country that welcomes expats?
In this video, we give you 11 tips for making the most out of expat life in Cambodia.
1. Learn The Khmer Language.
While this isn’t essential, because English is spoken across Cambodia.
Not only is it respectful to learn the language of your host country, it will enable you to get cheaper deals when you shop, it will make it fun trying to converse and bring lots of smiles and laughs from locals when you try and speak Khmer.
It’s also a great way to break the ice with the locals.
2. Don’t compare Cambodian life with life back home.
You’re not living in your own country anymore, so don’t complain about the traffic, weather, power cuts and the Cambodian way of life.
Don’t be one of those expats that moan and groan about various traits of Cambodian lifestyle that are, simply cultural differences.
If you don’t like the culture change, it’s easy, get on a plane and fly back home.
3. Don’t Get Angry.
There will be times when culture clashes may occur.
Loss of face is paramount in Cambodia, which means locals don’t like to say no or admit to not knowing something.
This may cause frustration.
For example, a Cambodian may agree to do something, but when it comes to doing it, it doesn’t get done.
It’s likely that they didn’t understand what you wanted them to do.
They want to be polite, so whatever you do, remain calm, keep smiling and explain again.
Getting angry gets you nowhere in Cambodia!
4. Don’t be shy.
Cambodia’s expat scene is alive, so don’t worry about making new friends, because there are plenty of people in the same situation as you.
Get out and about and introduce yourself.
There are lots of social events happening all the time, so sign up for a few and make friends.
5. Network.
This tip is particularly relevant if you’re looking for a wife/girlfriend, contacts or maybe a way to earn a bit of extra cash.
In Cambodia, it’s often about who you know, more than what you know, so get out there and network.
6. Join Facebook groups.
Facebook is massive in Cambodia!
Facebook is a great tool to find out what’s going on with events in the Kingdom and is a great source of information.
It’s a fantastic tool to communicate and to build up a network of people.
7. Travel within Cambodia.
Coping with the challenges that are thrown at you on a daily basis while living in a foreign country, can take its toll and may become draining, especially when your living in a chaotic city.
So, get away for a weekend at the beach, an escape to the jungle, or just jump on a plane and travel to other parts of Southeast Asia.
They are all assessable and cheap to explore.
8. Don’t become a loner.
With such a thriving expat scene, it’s easy to find fellow countryman or other foreigners who call Cambodia home.
Get out of your comfort zone and fully immerse yourself in the Cambodian experience.
It’s what being an expat is all about.
9. Invest in good health insurance.
Cambodia’s healthcare system is not the best, with some horror stories flying around.
There are a handful of private hospitals and clinics that cater to most illnesses, but the costs can be exorbitant.
For emergencies and serious accidents, care simply isn’t available in Cambodia, meaning evacuation to Bangkok.
If you don’t have health insurance, then you’d better hope you have a healthy bank account.
Insurance should be a non-negotiable!
10. Cambodia is a safe destination.
Contrary to what some people living in the West may think, Cambodia is a safe country.
While there are some human rights issues within the country, life in Cambodia is peaceful.
Of course, like anywhere else in the world, crime does happen, and expats should be wary of petty crimes like bag snatches, which can be common on the odd occasion.
11. Prepare to have a fantastic new experience.
Cambodia captures the hearts of many people who visit.
Cambodians are kind, gentle and happy.
The country is also developing at a rapid pace, which means exciting new opportunities and experiences are constantly popping up.
It also has some stunning nature and contrasting landscapes that make travelling an absolute joy.
So, there you have it.
11 tips to making the most out of your expat lifestyle in Cambodia.
Thanks for watching and have a great day.

Bangkok Gay Guide
If you’re looking for a gay friendly area to stay in Bangkok or even just for that One Night Only type of experience, this is where all the fun begins, at the Silom Intersection. Here at the happy crossroads, we stand in the middle of a hub for gay travellers. It is here that we will start our tour to see all that this delightful area has to offer.
It’s all walking distance so there’s no need to worry about taxis, sky trains or even the need of a map.Head out onto Silom Soi 2 and 2/1 and watch the action unfold here. There is the Diamond Bar where you can indulge in the delicious Italian-Thai menu and get the night going with the extensive wine list. Then turn it up a notch and head on over to Soi 2 Bar, home of the famous DJ Station.
If a party isn’t a party until it goes into the wee hours of the morning, then check out G.O.D, which let’s you party until 6am. Shirts will be coming off before you know it! Some different options are just one street down, in the famous Soi 4. An oldie but a goodie is the Telephone Pub, a gay pub and karaoke. It has earned its reputation as the centre of the gay social life, a place of conversation and a great time!
Then moving deeper into the Soi, you will come across the mysterious and alluring Stanger Bar: a 3-storey single unit with an outdoor seating area. The perfect night to visit would be next week when they will be celebrating their 1st year anniversary with a cocktail reception. But on any given night, expect a free “Sperm” shot, sip on a cocktail and marvel at the dark and moody décor.
