Visit To Camp Nelson

On March 20, 2019 Charles Blatcher III, Chairman of the National Coalition of Black Veterans Organizations, and Aukram Burton, Executive Director of the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage traveled to Camp Nelson, in Nicholasville, located in southern Jessamine County, Kentucky. The purpose of their visit was to attend a National Park Service presentation at the newly established Camp Nelson National Monument. Camp Nelson was the training base for Black soldiers during the Civil War. The base became a refuge for Black families under the protection of the Union Army. 

Camp Nelson National Cemetery was their last stop of the visit. There are 2,452 burials that date to the U.S. Civil War, and of those, 837 are known to be the graves of African-American soldiers. Their gravestone are marked with the letters USCT over their names; the designation stands for United States Colored Troops.

This video is a virtual tour of the well documented story of Camp Nelson presented in interpretive exhibits housed in the restored structures still standing from the period.

Old Camp Nelson Bridge, Jessamine County, KY

This is footage taken of the old Camp Nelson Bridge for US 27 by Camp Nelson Heritage Park in Southern Jessamine County. In 1931, this bridge was constructed as the replacement bridge for the original covered bridge used by Civil War Confederate and Union soldiers. This footage includes a fly-through of the old bridge and high level aerial footage of both the old bridge and the new bridge replacement for the us 27 highway constructed in the 1971.

Rep. Barr on the Camp Nelson Heritage National Monument Act

On June 5, 2018, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5655, the Camp Nelson Heritage National Monument Act, which was introduced by Congressman Barr. This legislation would include Camp Nelson as a unit of the National Park System.

An honor guard remembers a soldier's service, whether the battle was last week or decades ago. At hundreds of funerals each year, Kentucky's Camp Nelson Honor Guard accompanies veterans to their final resting place at Camp Nelson National Cemetery with full military honors. The guard is among only three in the nation using caisson and riderless horse, symbolizing the soldier who will ride no more.

The guard honors the dead with a 21-gun salute, a folded U.S. flag, and cannon salute. Camp Nelson is the only honor guard in the nation providing a single-horse hearse for all active-duty military personnel and veterans. Rescued horses, chosen for their composure, are used for services.

The guard wears period Civil War style uniforms, in honor of the cemetery's history. The cemetery itself was opened in 1863 for African-American soldiers from the Union Army. When it became a national cemetery in 1868, hundreds of Civil War dead were re-buried here.

Since then, thousands more from the nation's wars have come home to Camp Nelson.

FORT BRAMLETTE CAMP NELSON KY old civil war earth works Nicholasville, Kentucky this video is in 4 parts and was made back in the 90's , i made it for a good friend that was not physical able to walk to it, i transfered it off vcr tape to a dvd, i know that it looks like two guys lost in the woods in ky but this place is really a huge place, it has massive earth works that you may be able to see on the video but its hard to see even on the vcr tape because the place is so big and over grown , the fort has allways been hard to access but now it is impossible to get to anymore , its on private property and the guy wont let anyone in to see ,so i thought that i would upload this video for thoese that are interested in camp nelson and have not had the opportunity to see the fort. lets just hope one day it will become a place we can all can go too and it will be preserved!!!

History in the News: Camp Nelson Suggested as Next National Monument

Recently the United States Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke, recommended that Camp Nelson be named a National Monument. That status could lead to more heritage tourism for Kentucky. Kentucky History Advocate Stuart Sanders met with Steve McBride from Camp Nelson, to learn more.

It is also where my Pops rests now - I don't know - I just thought I would get some video of the place from above to show how perfect these plots line up - Very nice place to visit a loved one's final resting place... Had total permission from the ground crews there to do this and made sure I was the only one there while doing this video. I miss my Pops everyday and am grateful for the time I had with him!
