Montezuma's Castle and Well National Monument, Near Fort Verde, Arizona
The trip to Montezuma's Castle was interesting, but not one of our most fun. The Well, on the other hand, was quite scenic and exciting. I also got to enjoy some Native American Flute Music performed live by Harry Seavey (
Montezuma's Castle had a nice visitor's center and some interesting things to purchase and watch, but the Castle itself was a bit disappointing. We couldn't get as up close to it as other sites we had recently been to, and it was much more crowded and noisy than the others as well. Still, the flute music was nice, and if your looking for souvenirs this is definitely the place.
Montezuma's Well was far more interesting with a more involved hike. Especially going down to the outlet on the back side of the well is a very nice and scenic place to be. The giant trees and man-made ditch are especially fun to see.
You cannot walk from one place to the other (it's a 20-minute drive partially along the freeway), which may be while most people don't show up as well after seeing the Castle, which is unfortunate because the Well is likely the better spot to see.
These are probably the most popular Verde Valley Archeology sights to go see, but there are plenty more in the area. Be sure to check out my other videos for more great places to visit like this.

FREE CAMPING NEAR THE GREAT SAND DUNES! (AND EXPLORING MESA VERDE NATIONAL PARK)
➝ This Episode:
We are loving our time in Colorado! We start off this episode exploring Great Sand Dunes National Park and then head back to camp to show you a great free camping spot we found on Campendium. We stayed at San Luis State Wildlife Area and get this, we had free 50 amp hookups! They have a dump station on site as well but no water hookups. Not bad for free! We moved to Mesa Verde National Park next and had an absolute blast running around this park. It's safe to say it jumped into our top three National Parks! Jason also upgraded the control panels for our air conditioners; now we're able to control them remotely!

Video of Holbrook/Petrified Forest KOA, AZ from SwitchbackKids .
Video highlights from our time in Petrified Forest
-----------------------------------------
SwitchbackKids .'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Convenience over scenery near Petrified Forest National Park
Since there are no developed campgrounds inside Petrified Forest National Park, you have two options: choose a private campground outside of the park, or grab a permit and set off into the backcountry. We did both during our visit in August 2015.
We were pleasantly surprised with our campsite at the KOA outside of Petrified Forest. Typically, we prefer campgrounds that are more scenic and rustic, but after a few weeks on the road, we enjoyed the amenities (hot showers, coin laundry, wifi, all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast) and convenience (less than 30 minutes to the park) of this KOA. We chose the “deluxe” tent site, which, for $2 more than the regular tent site, offered a covered picnic table, hot & cold water, and electricity at the site. The campground was nearly empty at this time of the year, so although the sites are close together, we felt alone. The only downsides would be the less-than-inspiring scenic views and the cramped sites during peak season.
The proximity and position of this campground to the national park allows for easy visiting and minimal backtracking. We’d suggest starting your trip along Highway 40 to the northern Painted Desert Visitor Center to get acquainted with the park, then making your way south and exit near the Rainbow Forest Museum. Simply return to the campground via Highway 180.
Inside the park (north to south), here are the must-sees: the Painted Desert National Historic Landmark (try to time it and attend a free ranger guided tour), the Blue Forest, Jasper Forest (below this overlook was our favorite trail of the park!), Crystal Forest, and the Giant Logs area. Don’t forget to stop at both visitor centers for more information about this fascinat...

Sedona & Red Rock State Park, Arizona
02-09-2015 Produced by Erick F Dircks
Off to Red Rock State Park, via Sedona, and other fun spots along the way. Met many people at the Red Rock Ranger Station. They told us where we could go to capture the most beauty in the time we allowed ourselves. It was a very long & rewarding day, and rewarded ourselves to Hog Wild barbecue, where you could Eat In or Pig Out. We ate in, but Pig Out anyway! Back to camp we go. Have everything ready for our train ride, all cameras, camcorders, and GoPro all charged! We all are ready for our last fun adventure after our four night stay at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. Not only was Dead Horse Ranch beautiful, it is right in the middle of everything around Sedona, AZ. We kept very busy the 4 days we were here, with the 5th day ahead of us!

Needle Rock Recreation Area Hike: November 23, 2018
The floods of 1993 washed away a lot of trees on the Verde. I took some pictures of the Needle Rock Area in 1997 and shot some more pictures to compare the difference. Low water flows and removing cattle has allowed the riparian growth to come back. I hiked to an old fishing and camping spot that is 2.25 miles upstream from Needle Rock. The recent rains in October of 2018 washed away the pipe barriers at Needle Rock Beach. No parking is allowed there until it is fixed. The total hike was 4.75 miles
