Police and Football Federation Australia announce tough stance on soccer hooligans
NSW Police and Football Federation Australia (FFA) have today announced a cooperative approach that will see criminal charges and bans applied to spectators who break laws and the FFA Spectator Code of Conduct.
The announcement follows two incidents at soccer matches in Leumeah and Edensor Park.
About 8.15pm (14 August 2012), police from Campbelltown Local Area Command attended Campbelltown Sports Stadium following reports of violence at a trial soccer game.
Upon arrival police were informed by several witnesses that flares had been lit within the crowd and a 31-year-old man allegedly threw one of them into a group of people.
Police will allege a brawl erupted and a 24-year-old man kicked the older man in the head.
Following this incident a 32-year-old man was charged with possess in public place non-firearm for discharging irritant, behave in offensive manner in/near public place/school and use distress signal without authority/licence.
He was given conditional bail to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday 26 September 2012.
A 24-year-old man was issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice for affray, and is due to appear at Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday 17 October 2012.
In the second incident, shortly after 7.30pm on Wednesday 22 August 2012, a person threw a firecracker into the crowd at a trial soccer match at Edensor Road, Edensor Park.
Police, who were already present at the game, attempted to speak with possible suspects, when 50 to 60 people in the crowd tried to stop police and became aggressive towards them.
Officers arrested three people and charged them with a range of offences.
A 27-year-old man was arrested during the incident and issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice for assault police, resist arrest and hinder police officer in execution of their duty.
He is due to appear at Fairfield Local Court on Monday 17 September 2012.
A 20-year-old Glenwood man was arrested and charged with hinder police officer in the execution of duty and use offensive language in/near public place/school.
He will appear before Fairfield Local Court on Monday 8 October.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested during the incident and charged with resisting an officer in the execution of their duty.
He will appear before Parramatta Children's Court on 8 October 2012.
As a result of the exchange of information between the NSW Police and FFA, a number of people allegedly involved in these incidents have been issued with banning notices ranging from 3 to 5 years.
Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford today applauded the tough stance that FFA has taken in regard to anti-social and illegal spectator behaviour at football matches.
Our police liaise with the FFA and a banning system has been set up on the basis of information exchange. Police provide details of those charged to the FFA so they can be considered for banning.
History shows these bans have a big impact on reducing further instances of violence, Assistant Commissioner Clifford said.
Since the implementation of the FFA Security Program in 2008 a total of 43 people have been banned from FFA events. In addition there are 6 bans pending and are there a number of incidents under investigation that are likely to result in significant bans for offenders.
Head of A-League Damien De Bohun welcomed the increased support of NSW Police in dealing with the issue of anti-social behaviour at football matches.
All football fans have the right to enjoy watching our sport in a safe and comfortable environment. As such we have adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards those that jeopardise the enjoyment of others.
We make no apologies for adopting a hard line approach to criminal or disruptive behaviour at our events and we welcome the assistance of NSW Police in supporting our position.
Our banning program is aimed at excluding a small minority of persons who are intent on engaging in criminal behaviour. The vast majority of our spectators, including our active supporter groups, are passionate football fans who endorse our position in response to this anti-social behaviour.
We work very closely with our Consultants, Clubs, Police, Venues and their contract security providers to investigate all serious incidents. Offenders involved in recent incidents will be identified and face the potential of life bans for their actions.
We are committed to stamping out criminal and disruptive behaviour at all of our sanctioned events and making each event safe, secure and family friendly, concluded De Bohun.
