Cannes France Travel Guide - French Riviera Film Festival & More | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids
Where does the most renowned film festival in the world take place? Cannes, France, of course!
If you want to be a part of this glamorous event, you should visit this beautiful French city in mid to late May. That’s the time when thousands of films are screened, and the world biggest celebrities arrive to the town to take a walk down the red carpet.
We also recommend you check out Les Allées des Étoiles (Cannes’ mini version of Hollywood’s famous Walk of Fame), handprints of various film stars in the concrete. You will definitely come across some familiar names, such as Gerard Depardieu, Meryl Streep, and Sylvester Stallone, but also, Akira Kurosawa and David Lynch.
Cannes Walk of Fame begins at the base of the Palais des Festivals near the Tourism Office, wraps around the park and ends on the Croisette so you won’t have any troubles finding it.

Cannes | Fall In Love With Cannes France!
Cannes is a city located on the French Riviera and host city of the annual #CannesFilmFestival, #Midem, and #CannesLions International Festival of Creativity. The city is known for its association with the rich and famous, its luxury hotels and restaurants, once a small fishing village, Cannes is now a glamorous and expensive seaside town considered to be one of the social hubs of #Europe.
Tourists can check out the beauty and architecture of #LeSuquet, with its cobbled streets and breathtaking views, or sit at street side tables and enjoy the favoured hobby of people watching up and down the lovely marina. There are various other Riviera resorts along the coast here, of which our favourite is #Antibes to the north-east of Cannes and the chance to explore the #Capd'Antibes at the same time.
The economic environment is based on tourism, business fairs, trade and aviation. Cannes has 6,500 companies, of which 3,000 are traders, artisans and service providers.
Cannes has a Mediterranean climate and the city enjoys 12 hours of sunshine per day during summer (May to September), while in winter (December to February) the weather is mild. #Cannes summers are long and warm, with summer daytime temperatures regularly hitting 30 °C (86 °F), while average temperatures are about 25 °C (77 °F). Temperatures remain high from June to September, the busiest time of the year.

Cannes on the French Riviera
We are exploring more of the beautiful French Riviera traveling by train from Nice to Cannes. Touring strategies can be summed up in a nutshell: walk from the train station to the waterfront, stroll along the shore to the Old Town, eat and shop, then meander back to the station through the pedestrian area. It’s an easy four-block walk from the Cannes train station to the shore where you can have a peek at the high life exemplified in the extraordinary hotel palaces lining the grand Boulevard de la Croisette. Cannes is one of the most famous of the towns along the French Riviera, especially noted because of the International Film Festival held here every year in the month of May. The sidewalks all around the festival hall are dimpled with many impressions from the big stars – their handprints and footprints and signatures. They flock here during the festival to show off and promote their latest flicks. The main boulevard of Cannes is the Croisette, which is like any luxury Boulevard in Europe – it’s lined with the big fancy hotels. And there's the beach on one side and a row of luxury shops -- you’ve got Louis Vuittin, and Valentino, Chanel and so on, and those top hotels. So this is one of the great neighborhoods of the city that you just absolutely must come and spend some time at.
We continue walking a few more blocks on this beautiful Rue d'Antibes. It's just a great street and yet you might easily miss it in your visit to Cannes because it's not that waterfront boulevard with the great hotels and the Film Festival Hall, and it's far from the old town about a mile down the other side – so be sure to look for this street because you'll enjoy taking a stroll here. By this point you have seen all the main highlights of Cannes except for the Old Town which is up on the hill. Now we are entering the old town of Cannes. It's just up on this hill at the end of the road, overlooking the boat harbor. You don't want to miss this, so when you are in Cannes be sure to walk down to the end of town, it just takes 15 to 20 minutes to walk down here, and have a little stroll through old Cannes. The Old Town’s pedestrian zone gently rises via staircases and the upward sloping pathway of Rue Saint-Antoine to the top of the small hill, and that provides a great view looking back across the boat harbor to the beaches, elegant hotels, marina and Festival Hall down below.

Cannes, France
Cannes is one of the most legendary towns along the French Riviera, famous for the International Film Festival held in May and home to several super-deluxe luxury hotels fronting on a long sandy beach. But surprisingly, the main shopping area and old section are down-to-earth, with normal prices and a friendly atmosphere. Touring strategies can be summed up in a nutshell: walk from the train station to the waterfront, stroll along the shore to the Old Town, eat and shop, then meander back to the station through the pedestrian area. It's an easy four-block walk from the train station to the shore where you can have a peek at the high life exemplified in the extraordinary hotel palaces lining the grand Boulevard de la Croisette. Nobody will stop you from walking through their lobbies and perhaps pausing for some refreshments.
Just beyond the marina on the other side of the Film Festival Hall, you will reach the Old Town of Cannes, easily be missed by those hesitant to walk uphill, but don't be dissuaded. Called le Suquet, this simple neighborhood is a welcome counterpoint to the ostentatious display of wealth down below.
A central lane, Rue Meynadier, is for pedestrians only and runs for about a mile towards the train station, which is where you'll be heading shortly to continue the day's journey. There are plenty of souvenir shops and all variety of merchandise for sale on these busy main streets of Cannes. When you have finally finished your visit to this beautiful city, walk over to the train station and resume your journey.
Cannes Travel Guide: Vacation in Cannes and Your Next Holiday Destination
Cannes is one of the most popular cities on the French Riviera, and carries a reputation of glitz and glamour. Cannes is most known for hosting the annual Cannes Film festival as well as the Cannes Lions Festival. Every year, the city attracts many of the world's celebrities, who have the city as their favorite summer hideout place.
Cannes offers a number of luxury hotels and restaurants, and has become a popular summer resort
Unlike most other cities on the French Riviera, there's always something going on in Cannes. The city is full of life all year around, but it is especially in the months of July and August when the streets get crowded, and people come from all over the world to experience the wonderful atmosphere of Cannes, and discover the reason why so many have Cannes as their favorite city on the Riviera.
During the summer, luxury cars crowd the streets of Cannes, especially along the seaside street, the Boulevard de la Croisette.
The Promenade de la Croisette is the waterfront avenue in Cannes, lined with palm trees. The Croisette us unarguably the most iconic landmark of Cannes, most known for its beautiful seaside promenade, its restaurants, cafés, popular beaches, and maybe most importantly, luxury shops from most designer brands you can think of.
Today, it may seem unlikely that Cannes was originally just a small fishing village, but it was in the early-mid 19th century that Cannes began developing into what it is today, as the British aristocracy started spending time here due to the pleasant climate.
Le Suquet
If you want to experience a more authentic side of Cannes, you can visit the old district of Cannes by the name of Le Suquet. The old town of Cannes is a part of the city which shows a different personality of what you may associate Cannes with. The old town of Cannes is the original fisherman’s’ residential area of Cannes. The houses belonging to the fishermen, the majority of which are still standing today in the narrow streets are more than hundred years old. In 1088, the Château de la Castre is the main attraction that draws tourists to the old town today. The area around the Château de la Castre is the oldest part of the old town in Cannes, and on the hill, you'll also find the watchtower which you can see from the harbor and even from the festival place.
Taking the petit train to the top of Le Suquet hill is a popular activity among tourists, and once on the top, you can admire the stunning views over Cannes. The petit train departs from the Croisette, close by the Place De Festival.
If you don't mind walking, you'll be able to see the beautiful narrow streets and the picturesque houses on the way up.
Shopping
Cannes is unarguably the go-to city for shopping on the French Riviera, with countless stores for every taste - from luxurious designer brands to traditional French shops.
On the Boulevard de la Croisette, you'll find the most luxurious stores, but the main shopping street is Rue d'Antibes. Here, you'll find more affordable stores which carries everything you may need. Rue d’Antibes runs parallel to La Croisette, and this shopping street is simply a must-visit when you are in Cannes.
Cannes Croisette beach
Cannes is one of the most popular beach towns on the French Riviera, mainly due to the fact that Cannes has sandy beaches, unlike most others which have pebbles. During the high season, the beach is packed. Depending on your budget, you can choose between free public beaches, or private beaches where you have to rent a sunbed. The mainland coastline of Cannes is 7.5 kilometers, and is lined with plenty of incredible restaurants, cafés, and most importantly, sandy beaches.
FORVILLE MARKET
The most iconic shopping in Cannes takes place in the Forville market. If you're looking to experience a traditional French market with locally produced provencal products, this is the place to go.
The market was pedestrianized in 2012 and is situated close to the Croisette and by the foot of Le Suquet. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 7am–1pm, and is closed on Mondays. The Forville market truly is the best way to experience a more local and authentic side of Cannes, and in addition to that, it is the best place to find fresh vegetables and fruit.
Cannes is a city which offers something for everyone. From Michelin-starred restaurants to a day on the beach, to run along the beautiful coastline, or perhaps enjoying a cocktail on one of the rooftops along the Boulevard de la Croisette.
When will you visit to experience everything that Cannes has to offer?
