Take a stroll through Cannes as you learn about its history. Accompanied by your guide, admire the old town of La Sequet and the famous Boulevard of La Croisette. You'll begin with a walk to the old part of the city built on the site of the former Canois Castrum, a Roman town dominated by a castle, on the slopes of Mont Chevalier. As you take Rue Perissol, the road ascends to Place de La Castre, surrounded by a defensive wall and dominated by the 16th-17th century Provencal Gothic style church, Notre Dame de L'Experance. The old bell tower leads you to a long tree lined terrace, offering a fine view of the town, harbor and Ile Ste. Marguerite.
Continue on Rue Meynardier, formerly the main street linking the new town with Le Suquet. It is lined with a variety of shops and some fine 18th century doorways. Pass by the old covered market on your way to the famous Rue d'Antibes, the main shopping street. As you return to the maritime terminal along the famous Boulevard de La Croisette, see where locals stroll in the winter, and how the elegant promenade is bordered by palm trees and gardens overlooking a fine sandy beach. Luxury hotels and elegant shops line the front and side streets along with galleries, antique shops, cinemas and night clubs. At the top end of La Croisette, east of the port, is the new Festival and Conference center; the last stop before heading back to your ship.
Note: Tour participation is limited. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. There are approximately 4 miles of walking over flat, uphill and cobblestoned terrain, with 25 steps to negotiate.

Cannes on the French Riviera
We are exploring more of the beautiful French Riviera traveling by train from Nice to Cannes. Touring strategies can be summed up in a nutshell: walk from the train station to the waterfront, stroll along the shore to the Old Town, eat and shop, then meander back to the station through the pedestrian area. It’s an easy four-block walk from the Cannes train station to the shore where you can have a peek at the high life exemplified in the extraordinary hotel palaces lining the grand Boulevard de la Croisette. Cannes is one of the most famous of the towns along the French Riviera, especially noted because of the International Film Festival held here every year in the month of May. The sidewalks all around the festival hall are dimpled with many impressions from the big stars – their handprints and footprints and signatures. They flock here during the festival to show off and promote their latest flicks. The main boulevard of Cannes is the Croisette, which is like any luxury Boulevard in Europe – it’s lined with the big fancy hotels. And there's the beach on one side and a row of luxury shops -- you’ve got Louis Vuittin, and Valentino, Chanel and so on, and those top hotels. So this is one of the great neighborhoods of the city that you just absolutely must come and spend some time at.
We continue walking a few more blocks on this beautiful Rue d'Antibes. It's just a great street and yet you might easily miss it in your visit to Cannes because it's not that waterfront boulevard with the great hotels and the Film Festival Hall, and it's far from the old town about a mile down the other side – so be sure to look for this street because you'll enjoy taking a stroll here. By this point you have seen all the main highlights of Cannes except for the Old Town which is up on the hill. Now we are entering the old town of Cannes. It's just up on this hill at the end of the road, overlooking the boat harbor. You don't want to miss this, so when you are in Cannes be sure to walk down to the end of town, it just takes 15 to 20 minutes to walk down here, and have a little stroll through old Cannes. The Old Town’s pedestrian zone gently rises via staircases and the upward sloping pathway of Rue Saint-Antoine to the top of the small hill, and that provides a great view looking back across the boat harbor to the beaches, elegant hotels, marina and Festival Hall down below.

The grande dame of them all is the Carlton, a magnificent structure one century old but sparkling like new. It's super-expensive, and during the Film Festival, forget about it -- you've got to be a Hollywood player or big-shot buyer to get a room. But in the rest of the year, especially in the off-season, you might find an affordable room in this elegant palace. The baroque dining salon dates to 1911 with original décor intact, and the elegant lobby also features a lovely lounge. The Carlton is on the waterfront with the beach across the street and, of course, a row of high-end shops out front.
The Majestic is another of those fabled palace hotels -- so go in, have a look around the Egyptian-themed lounges, sit down, relax, use the facilities, maybe have a snack at the café. Then head back out onto the promenade where you'll find a pretty sculpture of a lioness and her cubs in a garden. The Marriott with its soaring atrium lobby, is another spectacular 5-star deluxe hotel along this promenade.
Off-season is generally too cold for beach action, so if seeing those nubile, exposed bodies is important, you would be better off visiting here in the summertime despite the crowds and higher prices.

Cannes is a city located in the French Riviera. It is a busy tourist destination and host of the annual Cannes Film Festival and Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival. Once a small fishing village, Cannes is now a glamorous and expensive seaside town considered to be one of the social hubs of Europe.
Cannes moment to shine arrives in May as the venue for the Cannes Film Festival, entertaining the rich and famous. During the festival, fans can see actors, celebrities, and directors up close and in person on the famous steps of the Palais des Festivals at the end of La Croisette.
Renowned for its luxury boutiques and designer fashion, forgetting your credit card would be a big mistake when visiting Cannes. The shops in Cannes are concentrated between La Croisette and rue d'Antibes - a distance easily covered on foot. Here you'll find all the luxury boutiques you could possibly desire as well as other shops selling products at a more affordable price range. The old town has any number of shops selling souvenirs as well.

Before leaving Monaco, you'll drive along the F1 circuit towards the motorway to Cannes. Enjoy a stop in this world-renowned resort which is host to so many glittering movie festivals. After stopping in Cannes, you'll continue along a scenic coastal road that will lead you to Nice. Enter the city driving along the Promenade des Anglais, a splendid palm-lined boulevard stretching three miles along the Baie des Anges. You'll pass landmarks such as the legendary Negresco, an imposing hotel with a Rococo facade and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, built with pink bricks, light gray marble and vividly colored ceramics.
Your drive continues passing Regina Hotel to Cimiez Hill, a sophisticated part of Nice with many large villas. You'll pass the Franciscan Monastery, gardens and Roman arenas before arriving in Old Nice. Here you'll visit the old city where tall houses, bright with flowers or washing, protect from the glare of sun and keep the streets cool. Continue with a walk on Cours Saleya, the elegant promenade of Old Nice, lined with shops and restaurants and with the famous flower market (the Flower Market is closed on Mondays). The beautiful lower Corniche will bring you back to Monaco.
Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses and bring bottled water. Tour order may vary.
