Camp LIA: Summer Adventure in Moab
Sixteen urban Latino high school students from Utah kicked off their summer vacation with an unforgettable Take It Outside! weekend adventure on the Colorado River near Moab.
The students slept out under the stars, braved high water runoff, and crushed Class I-II rapids on an overnight river raft trip provided by BLM-Utah, in partnership with Latinos In Action (LIA) and O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.
Mentors from LIA, the BLM, U.S. Forest Service, and Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks shared their insights about education paths and careers in natural resources. The O.A.R.S. river guides demonstrated the value of respecting the environment, looking out for each other, and how to take care of themselves outdoors. Five students from Logan High School were honored with internships to participate as peer leaders.
The students—many of whom had never been camping before-- became fast friends as they shared an action-packed, multi-day outdoor experience. The participants camped and hiked on public lands managed by the BLM-Utah's Moab Field Office; exploring red rock canyons, discovering desert wildlife, and even studying dinosaur tracks.
The learning and fun will continue throughout the summer with Camp LIA day trips to recreation areas in northern Utah, thanks to a partnership with outdoor leadership school Splore. Recreational opportunities include paddle boarding and rock climbing.
All this comes about from cooperation among a team of incredible partners: Latinos In Action; O.A.R.S. Canyonlands, Inc.; Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks; National Park Service, Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance Program; The Outdoor Foundation; Utah State University; US Forest Service Uintah-Wasatch-Cache; Bureau of Reclamation Upper Colorado Region, and Splore.

Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands National Park is a U.S. National Park located in southeastern Utah near the town of Moab. It preserves a colorful landscape eroded into countless canyons, mesas, and buttes by the Colorado River, the Green River, and their respective tributaries. Legislation creating the park was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on September 12, 1964.
The park is divided into four districts: the Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the rivers themselves. While these areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, each retains its own character. Two large river canyons are carved into the Colorado Plateau by the Colorado River and Green River. Author Edward Abbey, a frequent visitor, described the Canyonlands as the most weird, wonderful, magical place on earth—there is nothing else like it anywhere.

Frederick Municipal Forest Off-Road Trail, Frederick Maryland
For the full trail guide please visit:
Frederick Municipal Forest is a 7000-acre oasis only 15 minutes away from busy Frederick Maryland. This watershed forest has over 11 miles of gravel, dirt, and slightly rocky roads coursing throughout. These easy roads would certainly not be considered an off-road destination, but they are a fine way to spend a few hours exploring the forest. There are no facilities in this forest, but plenty to do while cruising the trails. There are 12 ponds to explore, 2 are stocked with trout. There are miles of native and stocked trout streams. Other opportunities are hiking, picnicking, hunting, and scenic overlooks.

The Liturgy of Home: Terry Tempest Williams
Terry Tempest Williams, the 2017–18 Writer-in-Residence at Harvard Divinity School, delivers the 2018 Ingersoll Lecture.
She has been called a citizen writer, a writer who speaks and speaks out eloquently on behalf of an ethical stance toward life. A conservationist and fierce advocate for freedom of speech, she has consistently shown us how environmental issues are social issues that ultimately become matters of justice. So here is my question, she asks, what might a different kind of power look like, feel like, and can power be redistributed equitably even beyond our own species?

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

Utah ( YOO-taw, -tah listen) is a state in the western United States. It became the 45th state admitted to the U.S. on January 4, 1896. Utah is the 13th-largest by area, 31st-most-populous, and 10th-least-densely populated of the 50 United States. Utah has a population of more than 3 million according to the Census estimate for July 1, 2016. Urban development is mostly concentrated in two areas: the Wasatch Front in the north-central part of the state, which contains approximately 2.5 million people; and Washington County in Southern Utah, with over 160,000 residents. Utah is bordered by Colorado to the east, Wyoming to the northeast, Idaho to the north, Arizona to the south, and Nevada to the west. It also touches a corner of New Mexico in the southeast.
Approximately 62% of Utahns are reported to be members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), making Utah the only state with a majority population belonging to a single church. This greatly influences Utahn culture and daily life. The LDS Church's world headquarters is located in Salt Lake City. The state is a center of transportation, education, information technology and research, government services, mining, and a major tourist destination for outdoor recreation. In 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated that Utah had the second fastest-growing population of any state. St. George was the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the United States from 2000 to 2005. Utah also has the 14th highest median average income and the least income inequality of any U.S. state. A 2012 Gallup national survey found Utah overall to be the best state to live in based on 13 forward-looking measurements including various economic, lifestyle, and health-related outlook metrics.
