BARNSTABLE, MA- Gas Explosion at Cape Cod Animal Hospital- 3 Alarm Fire
Fire destroys Cape Cod Animal Hospital
Staffers at the Cape Cod Animal Hospital in Barnstable where a fire raged just hours ago are asking for the public's help in finding three dogs that escaped during their rescue.
Vicki Karras, kennel manager at the hospital and its Cape Cod Farm Kennels, said the dogs are privately owned and somehow got lost during the bedlam of rushing them out of the building. The building has been destroyed by the fire, she said.
It was a bit of pandemonium, but it could have been a lot worse, she said.
The kennel is located on Osterville Road in West Barnstable, and Karras said the dogs are probably still in the neighborhood. They are friendly dogs, she said, but advised the dogs are also in a traumatic situation and may act defensive.
Anyone who sees any stray dogs is asked to call 774-487-1329, or 617-688-7718.
Karras said no animals were hurt during the fire. Doctors at the hospital helped in rescuing them.
The fire remains under investigation

BARNSTABLE, MA- Man charged in chase with stolen excavator
BARNSTABLE, MA- A 24-year-old Hyannis man led Barnstable police on a wild but slow chase last night as he drove a stolen excavator erratically down Pitchers Way.
Five police officers tried to get Christopher Lunn to stop the 20,000-pound piece of construction equipement, but they said Lunn directed the machine at them and ended up hitting two telephone poles around 11:20 p.m.
He almost made it to Route 28, 1,070 feet from where he started out by the Jiffy Lube at Bearses Way, said Barnstable Police Sgt. Sean Sweeney.
Officers driving alongside Lunn and running in the road were yelling at him, Shut it off. Shut if off, Sweeney said. He kept driving. He wouldnt stop.
Police shot at him three times with a bean bag shotgun, shattering the window of the CAT excavator, and hitting Lunn in the shoulder and head or nose, Sweeney said.
They didnt know whether he was going toward houses. He started going toward a house at one point. Hed been drinking, Sweeney said. Bean bag projectiles are softer than bullets and are generally considered non-lethal.
Lunn continued driving the excavator toward police officers and hit the second telephone pole before coming to a stop, Barnstable police said.
Lunn was arrested on charges of larceny of property and five counts of assault by dangerous weapon for allegedly driving at the police officers. Drunken driving charges didnt apply because it wasnt a registered motor vehicle, Sweeney said.
After being taken to Cape Cod Hospital for treatment of cuts to his face and a welt on the shoulder area, Lunn was released to police custody and is due to be arraigned in court this morning, Sweeney said.
Excavator owner Eugene Dubis arrived on the scene last night and was able to drive the machine back to its construction site. The 2004 CAT is back at work this morning installing underground pipes on Pitchers Way, Sweeney said. NStar was notified about minor damage to the telephone poles, police said.

BARNSTABLE, MA- Police Make Arrest in Fatal Hit and Run Accident- Press Conference (05-20-10)
HYANNIS The police arrested an 18-year-old Hyannis woman Thursday night in the hit-and-run death of a local woman who was crossing North Street in her wheelchair Tuesday night.
Gina Giovangelo of 73 Vandermint Lane has been charged with motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, Barnstable police Sgt. Andrew McKenna said during a brief press conference Thursday night at police headquarters.
Thursday morning, the Yarmouth police found evidence related to the fatal crash at a Yarmouth motel parking lot, according to the Barnstable police.
The Barnstable police later found Giovangelos moderately damaged 2007 Nissan Altima in a commercial parking lot in Barnstable, McKenna said.
Giovangelo was being held on $10,000 cash bail overnight in the Barnstable police lockup until her arraignment this morning in Barnstable District Court.
McKenna said the investigation remains active. He would not comment on whether there were any passengers in Giovangelos car or whether she may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The police sergeant said damage to Giovangelos car is consistent with the crash that killed 47-year-old Lillian White, who was crossing North Street at about 10 p.m. Tuesday in her wheelchair when a car hit her and dragged her about 50 feet.
White was returning to her apartment after going to a convenience store, according to the police and her daughter, Siobhan White.
White died early Wednesday morning at Cape Cod Hospital. She is survived by seven children and three grandchildren.
Earlier this year, Giovangelo admitted sufficient facts to larceny over $250 from an incident in Barnstable in January, according to the Times archives.
