Cape Flyer over Cape Cod Canal (Buzzards Bay)
This morning I arrived at Buzzards Bay, and waited about thirty minutes for the Cape Flyer to arrive. After stopping at the Buzzards Bay Station, the flyer proceeded to Hyannis, but first crossing the Cape Cod Canal. This Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge is the second longest vertical lift railroad bridge in the United States to date. And it is currently the only vertical lift bridge to be left up in the U.S today, for a majority of sea traffic rather than land.

The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge (also known as the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge), a vertical lift bridge in Bourne, Massachusetts near Buzzards Bay, carries railroad traffic across the Cape Cod Canal, connecting Cape Cod with the mainland.
The bridge was constructed beginning in 1933 by the Public Works Administration from a design by firms Parsons, Klapp, Brinckerhoff, and Douglas as well as Mead and White (both of New York), for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which operates both the bridge and the canal. The bridge has a 544-foot (166 m) main span, with a 135-foot (41 m) clearance when raised, uses 1,100-short-ton (1,000 t) counterweights on each end, and opened on December 29, 1935. The bridge replaced a bascule bridge that had been built in 1910. At the time of its completion, it was the longest vertical lift span in the world. A NEW BRIDGE WAS BOURNE - in 1935
A young couple from Minnesota decided to visit Southeastern MA for their honeymoon. The trip included visits to Plymouth Rock, New Bedford and the Cape Cod Canal.
The newlyweds, loved it so much, that they moved here and spent the rest of their lives in Mattapoisett. Mr Furnans loved filming and photography and always brought his cameras along.

The Cape Cod Canal is a man-made waterway traversing the narrow neck of land that joins Cape Cod to mainland Massachusetts.
Part of the Atlantic Intra-coastal Waterway, the canal is roughly 17.4 miles long (approximately 7 of which are cut through land)[1] and connects Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south. The 540-foot width of the canal is spanned by the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and two highway bridges -- the Bourne and the Sagamore. Traffic lights govern the approach of vessels over 65 feet, and are located at either end of the canal. From the MLBaron Historical Archives.
BUZZARDS BAY, MA- Mass. Maritime Academy reacts to U.S. captains rescue
BUZZARDS BAY — .The training ship Kennedy sounded a quartet of horn blasts at 2 p.m. today to celebrate the rescue of Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean.
The blasts rang across Taylors Point, the Cape Cod Canal and into Buzzards Bay village.
Speaking to reporters, MMA Admiral Richard Gurnon repeated his call to arm merchant mariner crews, place soldiers if needed aboard commercial shipping and clean out the pirate havens.
This is no difference from the Barbary Wars that Thomas Jefferson had to face, Gurnon said.
Gurnon said he had expected the hostage drama that turned into a firefight in the end would play out gradually with negotiations. He said the business model of Somali pirates taking hostages and holding them for ransom must end.
We need to change that business model, he said, adding he understands there is shipping- industry opposition to the sentiment of not leaving it to insurance companies to pay for hostage release.
We have to remember there are more mariners held hostage out there, the admiral said. We cant walk away from this. We have to put international focus and pressure on the piracy and on Somalia.
Gurnon said his campus next to the canal was overjoyed with the release of its 1979 graduate. The good shepherd has been returned to the flock, he said. Good news for Easter. This is a great day for mariners around the world.
Gurnon said he remains convinced Phillips will return to sea again.
Absolutely, he said. This is what they do. This is what they are trained for. This is their life.
Captain James Staples of Norwell, a friend and graduate of MMA with Phillips, said the Maersk Alabama skippers rescue tops the Red Sox winning the World Series.
Staples said Phillips of Vermont is resilient, has a great sense of humor and a strong will.

In 2002, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge underwent a major rehabilitation at a cost of $30 million and was reopened in 2003. The Bay Colony rail line on the Cape is used for a seasonal tourist train, the Cape Cod Central Railroad, and to haul trash to a waste-to-energy plant in Rochester, Massachusetts. [1]

Beautiful ~Cape Cod Canal~ from the Air ~ dji Mavic Pro Drone. BEST TO WATCH IN 4K if Possible !!!! Yes a Sweet Aerial 360 View of the Cape Cod Canal ~ an artificial waterway in the U.S. state of Massachusetts connecting both ***Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay*** in the south, shown is this 4K video & is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The approximately seven-mile-long (11 km) canal traverses the narrow neck of land joining Cape Cod to the state's mainland. Most of its length follows tidal rivers widened to 480 feet (150 m) and deepened to 32 feet (9.8 m) at mean low water, shaving 135 miles (217 km) off the journey around the Cape for its approximately 14,000 annual users.
Most of the canal is located in Bourne, Massachusetts, but its northeastern terminus is in the town of Sandwich. Scusset Beach State Reservation lies near the canal's north entrance, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy near its south. A swift running current changes direction every six hours and can reach 5.2 miles per hour (8.4 km/h) during the receding ebb tide. The waterway is maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and has no toll fees.[3] It is spanned by the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and two highway bridges: the Bourne Bridge and the Sagamore Bridge. Traffic lights at either end govern the approach of vessels over 65 feet.
The canal is occasionally used by whales and dolphins, including endangered North Atlantic right whales; these can cause closure of the canal.
