Shackleford Banks Kayak Camping - Cape Lookout National Seashore
My wife and I spent the weekend kayak camping at the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
We drove down Saturday morning and launched at the Harker's Island Visitor Center. From there, it was a 4.9 mile paddle across to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. We fired up the JetBoil and had lunch before making the rough crossing to Shackleford Banks.
We set up camp and soon had three of the ~120 feral horses on the island come visit. We weren't sure they'd let us in our tents when the sun went down, but fortunately, they slowly moved on.
We made the paddle back to Harker's Island early Sunday morning. It was a great quick trip!

A Day Trip To Cape Lookout, North Carolina
We love the coast of North Carolina which boasts several historical lighthouses. Recently we had a chance to anchor near Cape Lookout where the water was warm, but the sky was a little bit overcast as a storm was blowing in from the Atlantic.

North Carolina's Wild Horses of Cape Lookout
A video of some of the wild horses, that live in the Cape Lookout National Seashore, on Shackleford Island. These horses truly make the barrier island a special place to visit. Each horse has been given an ID#, as seen in the video, are the stallion 24J and mare 8H. They all have free range and go wherever that suits them on the island, from the beach, to the woods, dunes and marshes, even into the Atlantic Ocean and back bays! These horses are managed by the U.S. National Park Service (not the BLM).
