Carolina Raptor Center | NC Weekend | UNC-TV
A visit to the Carolina Raptor Center is the perfect day trip for anyone interested in birds of prey. The center not only cares for injured birds, but features up-close, educational exhibits.
Eagle Release at the Carolina Raptor Center
Eagle Release at the Carolina Raptor Center is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which first aired in syndication on June 7, 2014.
In this episode, Carl takes us along with him as he travels to the Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersiville. We first meet Michele Houch, Public Relations Director, who gives us a brief orientation to the center. Over 900 birds come to the center for health rehabilitation annually. Some are released back into the wild and others, called education birds, are trained and visit schools throughout the region.
Natalie Childers, Program Director, introduces us to Bonsai, the Black Vulture. These birds, one of the smartest species here at the Carolina Raptor Center, have the learning capacity of a two to three year old child. Carl has the opportunity to hand feed Bonsai. This progresses very nicely until Bonsai drops a small piece of food on the ground and refuses to eat it because it has a bit of dirt on it. Natalie tells us with a smile that Bonsai the vulture is a picky eater.
Next, we meet Amber Rostintoski, Bird Curator, who is with a Harris' hawk named Scout. These birds are found in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. They are sometimes called the wolves of the sky because, unlike most birds of prey, Harris' hawks hunt in small packs of about four or five birds.
Carl sits down in the large outdoor amphitheatre where Talons: Birds of Prey is performed from Memorial Day through Labor Day. This show features 12 birds of prey. Today, an owl named Willow swoops back and forth over Carl's head.
Michele takes Carl to the largest flight cage at the center to meet an American bald eagle. The eagle has passed her mouse test and will be released today. The cage is large enough for her to fly back and forth.
Awhile later, a crowd gathers in a clearing at the center. Carl speaks with Dave Scott, Avian Veterinarian, who tells us the eagle came to the center with an old fractured wrist and could not hunt. She was placed on a diet to increase her weight and given physical therapy to increase the range of motion in her wing.
After a brief address by Jim Warren, Executive Director, the eagle is released. She soars with a triumphant majesty, a truly magnificent sight beautifully captured by a number of photographers.
As we watch the eagle disappear beyond the trees, Kevin Metcalf, Parks and Recreation Manager, explains that she could end up anywhere in the country. Birds have wings, he says, and they can go wherever they please.
Carl White’s Life In The Carolinas is an Emmy nominated TV and award winning show in its sixth season. It airs throughout the Carolinas.. Check your guide for air times. For more on the show visit lifeinthecarolinas.com

Our Independent Spirit - LITC Season 4 Episode 18
Carl White travels back in time for a visit at historic Fort Defiance, then visits Top of the Hill Distillery in Chapel Hill, NC and celebrates the release of a rehabilitated American Bald Eagle at the Carolina Raptor Center in Huntersville NC.
We had a great time at Fort Defiance, the people of Caldwell County were very helpful and accommodating during our production. We love stories of history and when we can have a bit of fun, it makes it all the better. If everyone enjoys watching it as much as we enjoyed producing it, everyone will have a great time.
The period music in the segment was performed by local musicians Kay and Patrick Crouch (Local) and tapped on location. Barry Stevens (Arlington, Virginia) as Benjamin Franklin, Tom Pitz (Orange, VA) as Thomas Jefferson, Clinton Byers (Local) as Major General Lenoir and Becky Phillips (Local) as Mrs. Lenoir.
Our visit to Top Of the Hill Distillery in Chapel Hill was met with great hospitality. Scott and this team were great to work with during our production.

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point
Today in 1942, Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point was officially commissioned in the beginning of World War II. Lt. Col. Thomas J. Cushman assumed command as the first commanding officer for the air station. “Officers were invited to attend if their work loads and other responsibilities permitted,” written by Master Sgt. Lou Nadlny on the 20 year anniversary edition of the air station’s very own newspaper, the Windsock.
During times of war, MCAS Cherry Point has been instrumental in providing air support for almost all operations conducted out of the East Coast. 77 years later, MCAS Cherry Point is still a crucial asset for air defense and as a training area for numerous military units. As the largest Marine Corps air station on the East Coast and with all the capabilities it has, the air station is ready for any new roles that may be demanded of it. (U.S. Marine Corps video by Cpl. Letters From Latta
This is a Glen Cashetta's student short documentary of the Latta Plantation located next to the Catawba River in North Carolina, U.S.A . The film is about life on the plantation, slavery, and service in the Confederate Army. It is a treatment of life in the Southern United States during the Civil War Period. The original letters, provided by the Historic Latta Plantation are brought to life using actors in historical costumes of the period. The Latta story is one of the grounds and the people who lived there during the 19th Century from 1820 to 1863. This film is an opportunity to take a glimpse at a significant time in our historical life. This film was made for Film 3050 at The University of North Carolina- Charlotte (Spring 2011).

_Our Mission_
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
_Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release_
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
_Informing, Educating and Inspiring_
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
_Martin Tyner_
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.
_Cedar Canyon Nature Park_
The CCNP is 22.6 acres of beautiful canyon property donated by Pacificorp, in Cedar City, Utah. We are in the process of developing a permanent wildlife rescue facility and Nature Park for the children of Utah. Sitting on the transition point between the Colorado Plateau and the Great Basin, the CCNP’s mission is focused on fostering appreciation, knowledge and wise stewardship of the Colorado Plateau and Great Basin environments, which include wildlife, botany, geology, history, and native culture.
