Carrigafoyle castle, in North Kerry. Ireland. Carrigafoyle Castle was the main stronghold of the O Connor Kerry, the principal chieftain of this barony named after him. For 400 years they were an important part of the ever changing political and military jigsaw of those times. From here O Connor Kerry was able to intercept ships going up the Shannon to Limerick, board them and take a part of their cargo. This practice continued until the middle of the 16th century.
In the Desmond wars in 1580, the castle came under fire from naval artillery on land and sea, under the command of Sir William Pelham. Following a two day siege the castle was breached and taken on Palm Sunday 1580. All the occupants, comprising nineteen Spanish and fifty Irish were massacred. Opposite the castle is the medieval Church of Carrigafoyle which is built in the same style as the castle.

The castle, which was built by Conor Liath O'Connor-Kerry in the 1490's and considered one of the strongest of Irish fortresses - was a large tower house, of the type particularly common across the north of the province of Munster.
It stood on a rock in a small bay off the Shannon estuary, and its name is an Anglicization of the Irish, Carraig an Phoill (rock of the hole).
The castle was known as the guardian of the Shannon because of its strategic command of the shipping lanes that supplied the trading city of Limerick, some 20 miles (32 km) upriver.
The bay at Carrigafoyle was shielded from the estuary on the northern side by a wooded island; within the bay the castle-rock was defended on the west and south sides by a double defensive wall; the inner wall enclosed a bawn, and surrounding this was a moat covered on three sides (the east lay open) by the outer wall, where a smaller tower stood. The tower-keep itself was 86 ft high, and the precipitous sides of the castle-rock were layered with bricks and mortar. At high tide the walled landing within the moat was capable of accommodating a ship of 100 tons displacement. (Wikipedia)

Carrigafoyle Castle is situated at the mouth of the River Shannon, and was referred to as the ‘Guardian of the Shannon’ because of its strategic location overlooking the shipping lanes that supplied the city of Limerick. The castle was probably built in the 1490s by Conor Liath O’Connor. The name Carrigafoyle derives from the Irish Carrig an Phoill, meaning ‘rock of the hole’. The castle consists of a single tower, over 24m in height. During the rebellion of Gerald Fitzgerald, 15th Earl of Desmond the castle was fortified with a garrison of fifty Irish and sixteen Spanish soldiers, who had arrived in Ireland in 1579. The castle was attacked during Easter 1580 by government forces under Sir William Pelham, Lord Justice of Ireland. Tradition recounts the siege as seeing one of the first uses of artillery fire-power in Kerry. On the first day Pelham ordered troops to cross to the sea-wall, where they were pinned down by gunfire and had boulders thrown at them from the battlements. On the second day government reinforcements arrived. The castle walls cracked under the impact of a few shots of cannon and the west wall collapsed, crushing many inside. The remaining occupants of the castle were subsequently put to death.

THE find of my trip! Situated off R551 north of Ballylongford in the Ring of Kerry on the west coast, it takes a bit to get to, small roads to get to the marshes on the edge of the Shannon River.
Some group has restored this castle to as best as it could be, despite a missing part of the front top. The best part though is that you can go in and UP, checking out the numerous little rooms where people used to live! A true medieval experience in my opinion. No guards, no cost, just drive up and explore at your leisure. I took a long video of what it's like to go in and up and see everything. I highly recommend the experience.
Carrigafoyle Castle
The Siege of Carrigafoyle Castle took place at Easter in 1580 near modern-day Ballylongford, County Kerry, Ireland on the southern bank of the Shannon estuary. The engagement was part of the English crown's campaign against the forces of Gerald Fitzgerald, 15th Earl of Desmond during the Second Desmond Rebellion. The castle was held by rebel troops in the service of Desmond and some Catholic troops from continental Europe.

This tower was built by the De Burgoes in the 15th century and the De Burgoes lived here until they were dispossessed by the Cromwellians in 1651. Cromwell benefactors inhabited the estate and castle itself for a short while until eventually the lands and castle fell into the hands of the Blakes of Tuam and the Jennings who where living there where given an estate in Ironpool.

Castle info: Castle Donovan was built in the year 1560 by Donal O'Donovan or Dónall na gcroiceann, so called because when he was a young child his mother had to wrap him in skins to conceal him from his enemies.
The castle is 47' long, 26' wide and 61' high. The walls are 6' thick .On the top is a very well defined parapet. The Castle was divided into various chambers or rooms. One room was set aside in the old days for food for the garrison and another store room for gunpowder and shot. It is built on a very solid rocky foundation and faces south of the valley. The main door was of heavy oak and was situated in the western-side.

Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family. The present castle, with its largely intact bawn wall and corner towers, is a fine example of an Irish tower house. Both the First floor Main Hall and the Second Floor Great Hall have been extensively restored with fittings and furnishings reinstated. The Orchard has been restored to an original 16th century design and an herb garden has been reinstated in the bawn.
