We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica.
In this third episode, you will see us with our truck camper Lucky LeAw visiting 3 States of the United States in one day. Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma.
We made a short stop in Galena to visit a place called Cars on the Route 66 where there is the tow truck who has inspired the movie/cartoon of Disney/Pixar Cars.
Oklahoma welcomed us with an amazing sunset and the day after we stopped at Blue Whale in Catoosa for a lunch break.

Highway Robbery? Galena Mayor John Carroll on Delaware Tolls and Maryland Roads
Over the last several years, the southern tip of Middletown in Delaware has assembled an extraordinary retail experience specifically designed to attract Marylanders seeking tax-free shopping. Starting with a Walmart Supercenter and then followed by the addition of a cineplex, popular restaurants, and a half dozen national chains like Michaels, Marshalls, and Kohls, this once sleepy town had transformed itself into a major commercial zone for the Mid-Shore.
Complimenting that vision was the addition of a major bypass for Route 301 to seamlessly connect with Delaware's Route 1 and Interstate 95. After years of construction, the state opened the new toll road a few months ago, saving commuters and second homeowners on the Shore close to 15 minutes in drive time to and from the Delmarva Peninsula.
That was the good news.
The bad news started immediately after the 301 bypass ribbon cutting. Maryland drivers noticed two things about the new traffic pattern. The first was it was impossible to access Middletown Warwick Road, where all these new stores were located, without using the new toll road. The second, with no warning was provided about the excessive charge, for doing that. It was going to cost a driver $4.00 each way to exit Rt. 301 after only traveling less than 2 miles using EZ-Pass. It was even worse for those without it with a bill in the mail for $5.60 one way.
Perhaps Delaware's goal was to make the history books as one of the most expensive toll roads in the United States. If that was the case, they succeeded. But in doing so, the state's highway planners not only have angered Maryland drivers with kind of highway robbery, but created the unintended consequences of severally damaging Maryland's secondary roads like the Cecilton-Warwick Road for drivers seeking toll-avoidance routes.
And nowhere is this felt more than in the unincorporated village of Warwick where car traffic on Saturdays has risen from 20 to 30 cars per hour going through their small hamlet to 1,000 or more vehicles per hour on roads that were never designed for this level of traffic.
While common sense would suggest that the first exit could be prorated based on the short distance involved with a simple software update for EZ-Pass toll collections, Delaware has no formal plans to make that adjustment.
One person who has been watching this closely as been Galena mayor John Carroll since the toll road was being planned some ten years ago. The Spy sat down with John in the town's council room to talk about unfair pricing of the new highway and the incalculable damage to Maryland's roads and the Upper Shore's way of life.

He's a Vietnam Purple Heart Veteran and has dedicated himself to immortalizing landmarks along the famed Mother Road. His favorite Route 66 sites are tattooed on his legs, arms, back, neck and elsewhere. Not to mention that our band logo was just added to his lower back...Ouch!
On this Veterans Day we release this music video to pay tribute to our friend who is dedicated to keeping the Mother Road alive for future generations to enjoy.

The Route 66 map shall take you across the skyscrapers of Chicago in Illinois, the prairies in Missouri, the Indian Territory of Oklahoma, Texas cowboys, old stones of New Mexico, the arid landscapes of Arizona, to the final destination of the mythical California border. Illinois: It is the traditional starting point lying beside the shore of Lake Michigan and its oceanic airs. Illinois is famous for “Muffler Men” which are gentle giants on roadsides ahead of tourist shops, garages or restaurants and service stations.
Missouri: Missouri exhibits an open-air museum that continues to remain abandoned along Route 66. Kansas: It is funny that the Route 66 barely touches extreme south-eastern Kansas, covering 13 miles passing three small towns: Galena, Riverton and Baxter Springs. You will find vast plains of wheat extending horizons that are sure to steal your heart away.
Oklahoma: It holds a record of the maximum distance traveled on the legendary track of Route 66 which is some 430 miles. Cyrus Avery who is popularly known as “Father of the Route” designed this “Mother Road” considered Oklahoma as his hometown.
Texas: It has a conservative, proud, of deep-rooted republican outlook. It has given America two Presidents from the Bush family who belonged to this city. Texans are extremely friendly and always up for an engaging conversation but they definitely are a bit touchy about their political convictions.
New Mexico: It is a land of extremes and contrasts. Your road trip in New Mexico will take you through mountains on the rise and desert plateaus, large cities and small towns that blend the culture of Indian, Spanish and Mexican traditions.
Arizona: Travelling along this historic Route through Arizona road trip is bound to convert you into a die-hard fan of this amazing route. The high-speed freeway gives quick access to some of the best surviving stretches of the old road, and these are some of the most captivating parts of Route 66.
California: The route through California shall take you through every type of Southern California landscape there is. Following this classic road trip passes through the demanding Mojave Desert, over mountains, and through lush inland valleys, to the beautiful beaches of Santa Monica.
To sum up, Route 66 in the US is an ultimate road trip that is filled with attractions, historical buildings, vintage roadside diners, museums, natural wonders, and so much more. Route 66 has gained a reputation as the United States of America’s most famous road. How did that happen, and why does it still matter?

When Cyrus Avery helped found Route 66 in the 1920s, he strived to create a road that would connect the Midwest to the West, and he resorted to promotional tricks and wheeling and dealing to get it done. The road quickly became a key route for migrants escaping the dust bowl and depression, forming its early reputation as “the Mother Road.”
That’s because it’s a road that’s more than a strip of concrete (or gravel, or dirt). It’s a historical document of everyone who’s traveled on it — as the many contributions from Vox’s YouTube subscribers show, that keeps it going even as the interstates run alongside it.
