Casa Luna Cooking School with Janet DeNeefe - The Marriage of Chilli and Shrimp Paste...Episode One
The Casa Luna Cooking School classes provide a fascinating insight into Balinese life, beliefs and culture through learning about its food, cooking and culinary myths.
Class discussions are relaxed and friendly and are held in the elegant grounds of the Second Honeymoon Guesthouse. They include specific references to the role of food in Balinese society, its ceremonial use and religious importance.
Participants learn about the exotic herbs and spices used in ceremonial and everyday Balinese dishes and are encouraged to actively help prepare the lavish Balinese feast that will then be enjoyed with a glass or two of the local rice wine or homemade hibiscus tea.

BALI 2018 - Alchemy, Casa Luna & Radler Tasting
We continued our food journey in Ubud and tried a raw vegan restaurant, Alchemy, which was disgusting. The next day we returned to Casa Luna and did a Radler Tasting.
#11 UBUD COOKING CLASS AND PALACE
We started the day with a walk up Monkey Forest Road to have a look around Ubud Palace. There are so many shops on the way and most are selling pretty much the same tourist souvenirs. We come to an alley and an artist was selling his paintings and drawings on the wall of the alley. We brought 3 hand drawn postcards from him.
At the end of Monkey Forest Road is the Palace. It was free entry and its a good job because its pretty small and not too much to see. We were done in 10 minutes.
We walked back down to a restaurant where we had booked to do a cooking class. We started by chopping the spices to make the Balinese spice paste which went into most of the dishes. We then used a giant pestle and mortar to grind it all together. It smelt fantastic.
We made several dishes throughout the lesson including one which used the stalk of a banana tree. It was actually really tasty.
Our favourite was the peanut sauce and the papaya salad but it was all very delicious. We were stuffed by the end of the course!
We love our food so we love to do a cooking class in most of the countries we visit if we can. Indonesian food is definitely a winner!
