Cass Scenic Railroad State Park: Cass, West Virginia
Cass is the Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County, West Virginia, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 52 The town, founded in 1901, was named for Joseph Kerr Cass, vice president and cofounder of the West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company. Cass began as a company town for those who worked for West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company, logging the nearby Cheat Mountain. The cut logs were brought by rail to the town, where they were processed for use by paper and hardwood-flooring companies throughout the United States. Cass's skilled laborers, who worked in the mill or the locomotive repair shop, lived with their families in 52 white-fenced houses, built in orderly rows on a hill south of the general store. In 1960 the mill closed. In 1963, the state bought the logging railroad and converted it into a tourist attraction, carrying passengers into the vast Monongahela National Forest. In the late 1970s, the state bought most of the town and its buildings for the new Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. In 1982 the mill burned down. The Cass Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Deep in the Appalachian spine of West Virginia lies the small town of Cass, home to the world-famous Cass Scenic Railroad. The railroad is home to the worlds largest collection of geared Shay steam locomotives, three of which we witness in operation on the CSRR, along with geared Heisler steam locomotive #6 on the railroad's Whitaker Trips.

Elkins Cass Scenic Rail Road, West Virginia (Late October 2016)
Several months ago my mom saw a program featuring the Elkins Cass State Park Scenic Railroad. She decided to order two tickets for her an I to go on a fall excursion (hoping to see some wonderful fall folliage).
On the day of the trip we woke up very early and left our house in Wexford, PA around 6AM. We arrived in Elkins, West Virginia around 10AM, and waited until about 11AM for the train ride which lasted approximately 4 hours. It was strange that no businesses were open on Sunday, and the few that were only stayed open during the time that the train was not in Elkins, so there was no where to pick up snacks except the station store. Fortunately my mom had packed some food for us and the train provided us with lunch. About mid way through the trip the train stopped and we were able to explore an area with a waterfall for 45 minutes before returning to Elkins. The return trip was significantly faster than the trip out. I have sped up/ and time lapsed some parts of the video, but essentially the entire experience is here. We got the more expensive seats and sat in the train car at the rear which was nicer and had a better view.
Link to our 3+ hour trip to Elkins, WV at 16X and 4X time lapse. (Note this film was produced and uploaded in 4K Ultra HD, and You Tube degraded it to 1080 P HD at 48 Frames Per second. The actual film was recorded at 15-30 FPS.
This link is the trip to Elkins West Virginia time lapsed at a slower rate of 8X and 2X. Again You Tube degraded the orginal video quality significantly.
Here is a link if you are interested in getting tickets for the scenic train ride we took and others.

Day Odyssey Series: Wilds Of West Virginia (with March winds!)
The next in our Baltimore-based daytrip series takes us into the mountains of West Virginia...but not till after we deal with gale-force winds a couple days before! Lost our power for several hours, but it comes back on as I do my follow-up later at night!
OK-on with the odyssey...
Again beginning on Interstate 70 to give us a jump on things, we make a brief stop in Williamsport MD for a quick look at the C&O Canal's Cushwa Basin, and the restoration of the Conococheague Aqueduct.
Then on to (or into) West Virginia! Via US 11 and WV 901 we head for wicked WV 9 (mountain crossings, curves and all-but some great views) and take that west to the towns of Berkeley Springs, Keyser and Piedmont WV, where we check out the former B&O RR stations. En route, we stop at Prospect Peak for a great view into the Potomac River valley! A few all-new locations too, and the usual history!
We make our way back on MD 36, I-68, then back on 70.
Done on March 4 2018.
P.S. Still regulated to public PCs, so bear with me if I don't respond to your comments right away-but I will ASAP!
