I was visited in #TrakaiIslandCastle wich is located on the middle of the #lake. It is only 30 mins away from city center of Vilnius. Tour of the Hill of crosses (Kryžių kalnas) Lithuania, UNESCO
This is a place of legends and peaceful revolt it carries a powerful testament of devotion mourning and freedom. Kryžių kalnas, first mentioned in writing in 1850 this was a place of mourning used by relatives of the victims of the Russian regime. The tsar forbids families to honour their dead refusing proper burials in cemeteries trying to suppress national identity and religious expression, the result was this Hill where crosses would appear by night only to be later removed by the tsar and again reappear. During the Soviet era planting, a cross was an arrestable offence. The place was bulldozed several times all the paths leading to this hill covered and ditches dug at its base yet somehow more crosses would appear overnight!
Other stories are that the Virgin Mary asked believers to cover the holy place with crosses in the late 19th century, or that this was a place of pagan traditions and sacred fires were lit here and tended by celestial virgins but most locals told me the first legend.

In 1993 the Pope celebrated mass here in front of thousands of people and is message is still on a papal cross on the mountain:

How many crosses are on the Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas) in Lithuania?
By most accounts, more than 100,000 placed here for nearly two centuries, and many more were destroyed by the Russian regime.
What's the best time to visit?
Surely when it's not raining or snowing, I can't imagine being here on a rainy day. Because this is 12Km outside of Siauliai visitors tend to arrive in groups (by Bus).
We went just before lunch and still, there were quite a lot of people, nothing that would prevent you from properly seeing the Hill though. Because this is quite isolated there is no lack of parking places either on the private (paid) parking near the entrance or on the main road.
Do you need to pay?
No, there are plenty of small shops and souvenir places where you can buy your own cross but other than that only the private parking os paid.
Where is the hill of crosses?
About 12 Km north of Siauliai, in Northern Lithuania.

Gediminas Tower Funicular Railway, Vilnius, Lithuania - 17th January, 2013
Gedminas Tower is the only remaining part of the Upper Castle in Vilnius, Lithuania. It is possible to climb to the top of the hill on foot or by taking a funicular. The tower houses an exposition of archeologic findings from the hill and the surrounding areas. It is also an excellent vantage point, from where the panorama of Vilnius' Old Town can be admired.
A funicular railway also known as an inclined plane or cliff railway, is a cable railway in which a cable attached to a tram-like vehicle on rails moving it up and down a steep slope.
This film features wintery views from the Gedminas Tower hill of the ascending funicular railway, as well as a view of the descent down the hill in the railway, with a view towards the Neris River and the 'new' Northern side of the City of Vilnius.

Historic Gediminas Castle Hill in Vilnius is rapidly disintegrating.
There will be no usual fireworks this Independence day around central Gediminas Castle as the Hill is rapidly disintegrating. The hill was particularly damaged when the construction of historical Palace of Rulers nearby started and when a company which no longer exists tried to reinforce the hill with concrete stripes called grillages, but the work was done poorly. Now these grillages are under a massive pressure and the risk is it could lead to a big disintegration of the Hill. There already have been several landslips on hill’s slope. Parliamentary committee of culture held a special meeting to solve the disintegrating Gediminas Castle problem. The government has yet to decide which institution should solve the issue of a worsening hill situation despite many warnings of experts regarding negative effects of increased transportation around the hill, funicular, noisy concerts around and even fireworks as Gediminas hill is the main flag point during various celebrations.

Lithuania's pagan ruler Grand Duke Gediminas, was on a hunting trip in the forests of Šventaragis valley around the mouth of the River Vilnia. When night fell, the party, feeling tired after a long and successful hunt, decided to set up camp and spend the night there. While he was asleep, Gediminas had an unusual dream in which he saw an iron wolf at the top of the mountain where he had killed an auroch (European bison) that day. The iron wolf was standing on the top of a hill with its head raised proudly towards the moon, howling as loud as a hundred wolves.
Awakened by the rays of the rising sun, Gediminas remembered his strange dream and consulted the pagan priest Lizdeika about it. The latter interpreted the dream as follows: ‘Let that happen to the Ruler and the Lithuanian State what was fated to happen!’ He told the Duke that the dream was a direction to found a city among these hills. The priest explained that the howling of the wolf represented the fame of the future city: that city will be the capital of Lithuanian lands, and its reputation would spread far and wide, as far as the howling of the mysterious wolf…’
So the Grand Duke of Lithuania, obeying the will of gods, immediately started to build the future capital, and took it the name – Vilnius – from the stream of the rapid Vilnia.

Gediminas' Tower (Lithuanian: Gedimino pilies bokštas) is the remaining part of the Upper Castle in Vilnius, Lithuania.
The first wooden fortifications were built by Gediminas, Grand Duke of Lithuania. The first brick castle was completed in 1409 by Grand Duke Vytautas. The three-floor tower was rebuilt in 1930 by Polish architect Jan Borowski. Some remnants of the old castle have been restored, guided by archaeological research.
It is possible to climb to the top of the hill on foot or by taking a funicular. The tower houses a museum exhibiting archaeological findings from the hill and the surrounding areas. The museum has models of Vilnius castles from the 14th to the 17th centuries, armament, and iconographic material of the Old Vilnius. It is also an excellent vantage point, from where the panorama of Vilnius' Old Town can be admired.Gediminas' Tower is an important state and historic symbol of the city of Vilnius and of Lithuania itself. It was depicted on the former national currency, the litas, and is mentioned in numerous Lithuanian patriotic poems and folk songs. The flag of Lithuania was re-hoisted atop the tower on October 7, 1988, during the independence movement that was finalized by the Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania on March 11, 1990.
A reconstruction of the Royal Palace of Lithuania was completed in 2009, and is located near the base of the hill upon which Gediminas' Tower stands.
Long ago, the Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas was hunting in the woods of Sventaragis valley. The hunting was a success, but very tiring. The duke stayed there and spent a night. Gediminas had a dream that on top of the hill, where he had hunted down a taurus that day: a large iron wolf was standing and howling hard and loud, like a hundred wolves.
The Duke asked the mage Lizdeika to explain the dream. He explained that this was an omen indicating that he should build a city in this place, which would later become known around the world and would become the magnificent capital city of Lithuania.
Gediminas, obeying the will of the gods, began to build the future capital city, and a castle in the center of it. The city was named Vilnius after the nearby river Vilnia. Gediminas' Tower is one part of the castle, which was built by Gediminas.Wikipedia

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and a melting pot of different cultures. The city’s main landmark is Castle Hill with its red Gediminas Tower that crowns the steep hill and marks the beginning of the city's history. Within the tower is the Gothic castle of Grand Duke Vytautas which was built of red brick in 1419. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square which was where Grand Duke Mindaugas had the city’s first cathedral built behind which was situated his palace. The basilica contains a copy of the Shroud Of Turin. The Saint Johannis Church is part of the university complex. Along with its impressive altar, this modest church is one of the country’s most beautiful examples of baroque design and possesses no less than ten altars. Beyond the five bridges of the Vilnia, the artist Republic of Užupia welcomes with its state symbol of a golden angel with trombone. This old residential neighbourhood almost fell into total disrepair but a number of artists have subsequently settled there and its charming backyards have now been improved by several small art galleries. Vilnius is surrounded by forests and meadows on the banks of the Neris, a European Capital Of Culture full of fine architecture and vibrant spirit!
