Castle Rock State Park | Los Gatos, CA
Here is a short video of my hiking experience at Castle Rock State Park in Los Gatos, CA. It was a five mile hike that took approximately 5 hours to complete. This was considered a moderate hike, but it definitely did not feel that way. The lovely trail system had enjoyable views of the Santa Cruz Mountains, along with views of canyons and rock formations are part of the open space that California is known for.
Tips for hiking:
• STAY HYDRATED
• Bring water and snacks
• Have sunscreen
• Wear shoes with traction
• Go with a lively group
• Have an OPEN MIND

Castle Rock Trail Review - Big Bear Lake, CA
Complete Castle Rock Trail review from the CA-18 to the actual Castle Rock.
This is a short but steep trail that leads to some very impressive rock formations and overlooks Big Bear Lake. At 1.4 miles and 423 feet of elevation gain the trail is great for a quick outing with the family. It is steep enough to get your heart rate up but not intense enough to be a big deterrent.
Located in the San Bernardino National Forest you can expect to see hikers with dogs. The Castle Rock trail is very popular especially in the summer months. If you would like to avoid peak travel times consider waking up early and hiking before breakfast.
If you are staying in Big Bear Lake and would like to get your feet moving definitely keep the Castle Rock trail in mind. With an impressive rock formation and beautiful views of the lake it's definitely worth the effort.

This was a great hike. There was quite a bit of maneuvering over rocks while on the trail, which I liked. And the views were beautiful. Gotta love January in California.
Everything I read ahead of time indicated that the Ranger Station in the parking lot sold $2 maps that were well worth it. Well, they were closed, so we just had a map behind glass to work off of. Print out a map at home just to be safe. But, everyone we encountered on the trail turned out to be very nice and helpful.
There is a great campground at the top that I'd like to try out someday.
Also, there were lots of gunshots that could be heard in the distance. Apparently there is a shooting range somewhere in the area.
I'll be returning in the very near future. Another awesome CA park!

S2E3: Bouldering at Castle Rock State Park, CA - Feb 3, 2018
Join us on a slightly different episode as we take the short hike to Castle Rock proper and check out some of the rock climbing and amazing bouldering that can be found throughout the park. We'll stop by Jumbalia, The Magoos, Castle Rock and Parking Lot Rock.
And if you've been a subscriber for a long time, you may recall our second episode of Season 1 was here in Castle Rock State Park. It too was a slightly different episode in the fact that we had rented a couple different cameras and lenses and took a very quick hike out to the Falls Overlook area to test them out. We did that one more time in Big Basin in Episode 3 of Season 1, renting a different camera and lens, before we finally decided on the Sony A6500, that all of the subsequent episodes have been shot with.
The Falls Overlook episode can be found here:

Wilma and I did 5.6 miles here today according to Base Camp. We did mostly trails that are on the trail map but also did some mowed paths in the north end of the park that are maybe for hunting access, or possibly fire breaks, and finished on a ski trail. It is a nice park. The place seems well maintained and there are plenty of hiking opportunities. We stayed on the NE end of the park. Never got to the trails on the SW end. Maybe some other time. We did see a deer but he took off before we could get any video of him.
There was a creek for Wilma. We crossed it twice on the western most trail loop. She could only get down to it on one of the crossings, and then we came upon it again as it abuts the ski trail we came back on.
Several of the trails we were on were labeled as both hiking and skiing that did not seem like anyone could cross country ski on them as they were quite steep. It is pretty hilly terrain. Lots of grade change. The 5.6 miles took us over 3 and a half hours.

Solo Hammock Overnight at Castle Rock State Park
Join me as I backpack out to Frog Flat Camp at Castle Rock State Park in the Santa Cruz Mountains of Northern California. It was a cold, rainy El Niño kinda day, which yielded amazing scenery including waterfalls. I spend a chilly night in my hammock (which included a modified Costco down throw as an underquilt), and then enjoy spectacular views on my return hike. Each leg was about 3 miles, so this trip was more about getting out there for the night than logging serious miles. Nonetheless, I put together a lightweight / ultralight load out, with a base pack weight of 13 pounds.

S1E2: Falls Overlook - Castle Rock State Park, CA - November 22, 2016
- Falls Overlook - Castle Rock, CA - November 22, 2016
After catching the video bug once we returned from Utah, we knew this was something that we wanted to continue to do. However, only having a GoPro and iPhone to take video with, it was obvious that it was time to get a real camera. But with so many good cameras on the market, which one should we get?
We mapped out a couple different paths and decided to rent some camera and lens combos and just start shooting. Once the first rentals showed up, a Panasonic GH4 and a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema w/ Veydra lens, we headed out to one of the closest state parks near us, Castle Rock.
Usually when going to Castle Rock State Park we head straight to Castle Rock itself to take advantage of the fantastic bouldering and rock climbing. However, this time we decided to try to get some shots of the sunset and the best place to do so would be either at the Castle Rock Falls Overlook or up on Goat Rock.
Along the way to the Falls Overlook we decided to shoot the hike as well and try to do some comparisons between the two camera and lens combos. Once returned, we realized we had enough footage to put together a short 5 minute Trails We Hike video and decided to share it with you.
We hope you enjoy this, and be sure to click the subscribe button to follow along with us on the Trails We Hike!
