Alhama Castle Murcia Spain
Castillo de Alhama
Islamic fortress from the 11th and 12th centuries that sits on a sheer hill overlooking the town and the old route of the Guadalentín Valley. The Alhama Castle was one of many border fortresses, with the Kingdom of Granada to the South and the Kingdom of Aragón to the North.

Walking around the town of Alhama de Murcia Spain #the3amigos #expatinmazarron
Alhama de Murcia Spain.
Alhama is located in the Guadalentín Valley, sheltered by the Spuras of Espuña and La Muela. Defensive towers, castles, remains of walls, Renaissance mansions and noble houses reflect the long history of this valley. City that Arabs and Romans associated with the hot springs that flowed from the mountains, this characteristic is what will give name to the population, since Alhama means thermal bath. Witness to it are the ruins of the Roman baths, nowadays converted into an archeological museum. Its construction dates back to the 1st century, although they were later used in the Islamic era. On the rocky cliff that dominates the city are the remains of the Arab castle built in the s. Xll and whose feet have settled the population. Taken from the Alhama de Murcia Tourist Information website.

Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Castle of Lorca
Places to see in ( Murcia - Spain ) Castle of Lorca
Lorca Castle (Spanish: Castillo de Lorca) in Lorca, Murcia, Spain, is a fortress of medieval origin constructed between the 9th and 15th centuries. It consists of a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, made the town and the fortress an impregnable point in the southeast part of the Iberian Peninsula. Lorca Castle was a key strategic point of contention between Christians and Muslims during the Reconquista. It is listed as a Site of Cultural Interest. It is 640 m long and 120 m wide, and one of the largest castles in Spain.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that the site of the castle has been inhabited since Neolithic times. There were archaeological excavations conducted between 1999 and 2011, in conjunction with other excavations conducted in the centre of the town of Lorca. The excavations revealed the existence of an Argaric town that extended from the castle to the actual site of the current town. The excavations revealed funerary sites, homes, and a wall.
It has not been determined exactly when a castle or fortress was first built on the hill. The first written documentation referring to a castle at Lorca is of Muslim origin, which in the 9th century, indicates that the city of Lurqa was an important town in the area ruled by Theudimer (Tudmir), who ruled seven cities in southeastern Spain, mentioned in the Treaty of Orihuela that was preserved by the Andalusian historian Ibn Adarí in the thirteenth century: Orihuela, Valentila (possibly an equivalent for Valencia), Alicante, Mula, Bigastro, Eyya (probably Ojós), and Lorca.
During Muslim rule, Lorca Castle was an impregnable fortress and its interior was divided into two sections by the Espaldón Wall. In the western part, there was an area used to protect livestock and grain in times of danger. The eastern part had a neighbourhood called the barrio de Alcalá.
Lorca was conquered by the Castilian Infante Don Alfonso, the future Alfonso X, in 1244, and the fortress became a key defensive point against the Kingdom of Granada. For 250 years, Lorca Castle was a watchpoint on the border between the Christian kingdom of Murcia and the Muslim state of Granada.
Lorca Taller del Tiempo (“Lorca Time Workshop”) is a company that uses the castle as a theme park for medieval re-enactments and includes a touristic train that travels throughout the city, departing from the Visitor Centre (formerly the Convent of La Merced).

El Valle Murcia Spain #expatinmazarron
The Regional Park El Valle and Carrascoy is a Protected Natural Area of the Region of Murcia whose mountain ranges constitute a natural and historical border between the Guadalentín Valley, through which the famous Huerta de Murcia extends, and the Campo de Cartagena, with the Mar Menor as a backdrop.
Its natural values are characterized by housing a Mediterranean forest repopulated in the 50's in the Valley area and preserved naturally in Carrascoy, where plant diversity is high, especially among shrub plants, and the presence of protected animals, such as raptors .
Its strategic location has favored for centuries an important human and cultural occupation, which is manifested in various constructions and archaeological sites.
This is my second attempt to climb up the mountain to visit this ruined castle but from a different approach.

Abandoned Casa Méndez Villa Rosalía Librilla Murcia Spain #expatinmazarron
Casa Méndez
- in Spanish.
The house Méndez, also known as Villa Rosalía is a mansion located in Librilla, Murcia, Spain, in the access to the town from the Autovía del Mediterráneo. Built at the beginning of the 20th century by Andrés Méndez, it has been and still is a representative building of the town, due to its beauty and local legends about ghosts, despite which it is currently in a state of neglect.
The construction was carried out in the early twentieth century, specifically in the twenties, when the architecture is experimented with new designs, mixing old and modern styles, local typologies with the use of new materials. Its construction was promoted by Mr. Andrés Méndez, who left it as an inheritance to his six children. One of the heirs was José, known painter and drawing teacher. José Méndez tried, over the years, to address the rehabilitation of this unique project and even painted some murals in the rooms of the house; in fact it was proposed to make the mansion house a museum.
I want to thank Joaquin for given me the information about this lovely old building.
