Catacombs of Saint Sebastian via the Ancient Appian Way - in Rome
We travel on the Ancient Appian Way to the Catacombs of Saint Sebastian where the bodies of the Apostles Peter and Paul were entombed before they were each taken to the basilicas that honor them: Saint Peter’s Basilica and Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls.
As we travel to and from the catacombs along the Ancient Appian Way our guide tells us of the history of the catacombs and also the Ancient Appian Way and, as we pass by the Church of Quo Vadis, the story of Peter asking Jesus, “Where are you going?”

La basilica di San Sebastiano fuori le mura è un luogo di culto cattolico di Roma, nel quartiere Ardeatino, sulla via Appia Antica al numero 136. Ha fatto parte delle sette chiese visitate dai pellegrini in occasione del Giubileo, fino al Giubileo del 2000, quando è stata rimpiazzata dal Santuario della Madonna del Divino Amore.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go inside the world's biggest Christian catacombs where over half a million people were buried between the first and the end of the fifth century after Christ. Rome is a city and special comune (named Roma Capitale) in Italy. Rome is the capital of Italy and of the Lazio region. Rome's history spans more than two and a half thousand years. While Roman mythology dates the founding of Rome at only around 753 BC, the site has been inhabited for much longer, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Il nome Catacomba deriva da quello (ad catacumbas, probabilmente dalla designazione greca κατὰ κύμβας «presso le grotte» o «nell’avvallamento») di uno dei complessi cimiteriali cristiani di Roma✝
✝I cristiani non apprezzavano la tradizione pagana di cremare i corpi dei defunti e, per risolvere il problema della mancanza di spazio e l’alto costo della terra, decisero di creare questi vasti cimiteri sotterranei che formano gallerie autentici labirinti, lunghi vari chilometri, con varie file di nicchie rettangolari.✝
Le catacombe sono sorte verso la fine del II secolo, con alcuni ipogei cristiani privati e da un'area funeraria direttamente dipendente dalla Chiesa Romana. La Catacomba di San Callisto prende il nome dal diacono Callisto I, preposto da papa Zefirino all'amministrazione del cimitero stesso. Salito a sua volta al soglio pontificio, Callisto ingrandì il complesso funerario, che diventò il cimitero ufficiale della Chiesa di Roma nel III secolo. Ospita sepolture su 4 livelli, tombe di Papi e di Santi.
Dal 1930 sono affidate alla custodia dei Salesiani di Don Bosco.
Per accedere al complesso si possono utilizzare tre diversi ingressi. Il primo è situato in corrispondenza dell’incrocio tra via Appia Antica e via Ardeatina; il secondo si trova sul lato destro di via Appia Antica, poco prima delle Catacombe di S. Sebastiano; il terzo è collocato su via delle Sette Chiese. Nel luglio 2015 è stato inaugurato il nuovo Museo della Torretta, che con una selezione di preziosi reperti scultorei ed epigrafici del III e IV sec. d.C., fornisce un importante contributo alla storia della cristianizzazione dell'Urbe nella tarda antichità.
