Hundreds of people who have passed away have been set in these catacombs as a reminder of the surety of death and the fragility of life. My biggest takeaway: in the end, we are all the same, but the thing that matters is how he make the world a better place while we are living!
Visiting the Cappuccini Catacombs in Palermo, Sicily was the first of many trips to come where I take fearlessness to a whole new level. The Catacombe dei Cappuccini have been ranked among the scariest places to travel in the world. As I walked passed the countless corpses, I realized why.

The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are burial catacombs in Palermo, Sicily, southern Italy. Today they provide a somewhat macabre tourist attraction as well as an extraordinary historical record.
Palermo's Capuchin monastery outgrew its original cemetery in the 16th century and monks began to excavate crypts below it. In 1599 they mummified one of their number, recently dead brother Silvestro of Gubbio, and placed him into the catacombs.
The bodies were dehydrated on the racks of ceramic pipes in the catacombs and sometimes later washed with vinegar. Some of the bodies were embalmed and others enclosed in sealed glass cabinets. Monks were preserved with their everyday clothing and sometimes with ropes they had worn as a penance.
Originally the catacombs were intended only for the dead friars. However, in the following centuries it became a status symbol to be entombed into the Capuchin catacombs. In their wills, local luminaries would ask to be preserved in certain clothes, or even to have their clothes changed at regular intervals. Priests wore their clerical vestments, others were clothed according to the contemporary fashion. Relatives would visit to pray for the deceased and also to maintain the body in presentable condition.
The catacombs were maintained through the donations of the relatives of the deceased. Each new body was placed in a temporary niche and later placed into a more permanent place. As long as the contributions continued, the body remained in its proper place but when the relatives did not send money any more, the body was put aside on a shelf until they resumed payment.
The catacombs are open to the public and taking photographs inside is supposedly prohibited. However, the bodies have been shown on film in Francesco Rosi's Cadaveri Eccellenti (Illustrious Corpses), and television programmes such as the Channel 4 series Coach Trip, BBC TV series Francesco's Italy: Top to Toe, Ghosthunting With Paul O'Grady and Friends on ITV2 in 2008 and The Learning Channel in 2000. Iron grills have been installed to prevent tourists tampering or posing with the corpses.

Le Catacombe dei Cappuccini di Palermo si compongono di lunge gallerie comunicanti scavate nel tufo, per un'estensione di circa 300 mq.
In questi saloni sono custoditi circa 2.000 scheletri e corpi mummificati, rendendo di fatto le Catacombe di Palermo la collezione di mummie più ampia e straordinaria del mondo.
Le mummie venivano collocate in corridoi distinti in base a professione, sesso, status sociale.
Catacombe dei Cappuccini a Palermo sono uno dei cimiteri più famosi d’Italia grazie alla conservazione di oltre 8.000 mummie di frati ed esponenti dell’alta società, come nobili, ricchi borghesi, artisti, politici e rappresentanti del clero, mummificati dai frati stessi dal XVI ai primi del XX secolo. Questo macabro spettacolo è custodito nel Convento dei Cappuccini, annesso alla Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace, nel cuore della città.
La bambina, Rosalia Lombardo nata a Palermo nel 1918 morì due anni dopo per una polmonite. Il padre, forse spinto dal dolore, si rivolse al dott. Alfredo Salafia per mummificare il corpicino della figlia e preservarlo nel tempo.

I was fascinated by these macabre catacombs that immortalize corruptible flesh in period costume. Hundreds of dressed cadavers and mummies have been placed here since 1599. A visit to these whitewashed underground tombs gave me pause to reflect how short our time is on earth.
