????️Catalina Island things to do + Photowalk????️
#Catalina #CatalinaPhotowalk #Photowalk
Jefferson Graham brings the Photowalk cameras to Catalina Island, off the Los Angeles, for episode #46 of the Photowalk travel adventure series.
This edition inspired by Apple, which has named its latest macOS operating system after the island, macOS Catalina.
The Photowalk is all about searching for the best photo spots on the island, including the historic Casino, former William Wrigley mansion Inn at Mt. Ada, and where to get the best sunset and sunrise shots on the island. (Start with the best view shots on the boats.)
Along the way, Jeff takes a trip to the back country of the island, to Two Harbors and Airport in the Sky and meets some fascinating local characters.

The #Photowalks series is all about bringing viewers to cool places in the Southern California (and elsewhere) area in search of the best photo spots to light up your social media, and to show how, when and where to get them.
Past #Photowalk episodes include visits to Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Balboa Island, the Griffith Observatory and Venice Beach. We went outside the area to trek to Pismo Beach, a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Tokyo and Kauai.

Passage to Panama in a Nordhavn 56 - Ep. 21
fter taking possession of the new to us Nordhavn 56 Motorsailer and getting her all ready to go, we leave the dock in Florida and head south toward the Panama Canal. Our plan was do go from Tampa Florida to Colon Panama, a distance of roughly 1200 nautical miles in one long passage - weather allowing.
We did make it all on once passage and try to share the experience in this video.
The strangest thing that happened on this passage is that we got boarded by people that were likely Nicaraguan military, although they did not behave at all as if they had professional military training. They would not let us take down our sails, rammed into the side of our boat several times, and shook us down for “gifts” before finally leaving. They were basically thugs with uniforms - some might even say pirates. We managed to capture on video the incredibly crazy maneuvers of the boat operator and the boarding party when they finally left.
There are images of killing fish so for anyone who doesn’t want to see it - please skip ahead. Sections as follows:
Fishing 4:04
Nicaragua Military Boarding 7:01
Sailing 10:05
Boat Problems 12:13

Catalina Island Kelp Forest Diving 2013
Scuba diving @ Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California, January 2013. Def not a fan of frigid waters, but it was cool to see the kelp forest. Couldn't feel my fingers for 40 minutes after the first dive, and camera malfunctioned during the second, which had really cool rock formations and a stingray, oh well. But it was still an interesting trip!

Sailing from San Diego to Long Beach
Captain Tim and three crew transported Arete, a 37 foot Hunter powered by Tesla electric motor from San Diego to Long Beach in July 2017. The winds were not cooperating at first. I swear we were moving backwards at some point in the first night!
The Desert Sailor's first time sailing at night and doing over-night watches! I loved it!

Garibaldi : Channel Islands, California : UGENA
The Garibaldi is a brightly colored damsel fish native to pacific waters. It is the official marine state fish of California and is protected in California coastal waters. Like all male damsel fish, the male Garibaldi will boldly attack much larger swimming creatures, including humans, to the point of biting divers in order to try to drive them away from their nest.
Exploring the Venice Canals of Southern California
The Venice Canals (located in Venice, CA) are a great spot to explore in Southern California that are only a few blocks from the beach. Getting to the canals is easy and there is over a mile of walking you can do as you follow the water and cross over the bridges. A look at California's Channel Islands
The coastal waters around the Channel Islands are unlike any other ocean area in California. And while some of their land and waters have been set aside as national and state parks, key parts of the archipelago remain vulnerable. The coastal waters off Catalina Island, for instance, are under threat from overfishing and habitat destruction. But we have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to save them.
The Marine Life Protection Act is our opportunity to protect key coastal waters off Catalina forever, replicating the benefits marine protected areas have created in the four northern islands, which were protected in 2003 with a network of marine reserves. After five years, scientists found that kelp forests, fish and lobster were flourishing in protected areas, and the sport fishing industry was thriving as well. With your help, we can create underwater parks around Catalina as well, to ensure its sea life and habitats remain vibrant and productive for years to come.

Orange County, California
Orange County is a county in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 3,010,232 making it the third-most populous county in California, the sixth-most populous in the United States, and it more populous than twenty-one U.S. states. Its county seat is Santa Ana. It is the second most densely populated county in the state, second only to San Francisco County. The county's three largest cities, Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Irvine, each have populations exceeding 200,000.
Orange County is included in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Thirty-four incorporated cities are located in the county; the newest is Aliso Viejo, which was incorporated in 2001. Anaheim was the first city incorporated in 1870, when the region was still part of neighboring Los Angeles County. Whereas most population centers in the United States tend to be identified by a major city, there is no defined urban center in Orange County. It is mostly suburban except for some traditionally urban areas at the centers of the older cities of Anaheim, Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Orange, and Santa Ana. There are several edge city-style developments such as Irvine Business Center, Newport Center, and South Coast Metro.

Flying Fish Picked Off From Above And Below | The Hunt | BBC Earth
Flying fish can make powerful, self-propelled leaps out of water into air, where their long, wing-like fins enable gliding flight for considerable distances. It appears these Flying Fish are in a no win situation, picked off above the surface by Frigatebird's and devoured underwater by the Dorado.

California’s state fish by Marco Krause
“Do you know what your state fish is? Well, California’s state fish is the Garibaldi. The Garibaldi fish is a bright orange fish species that live in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean and feed off around kelp forests and coastal reefs and reach sizes up to 14 inches long.”
*The GEM course is an undergraduate summer program run by the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI: which is funded by the National Science Foundation.

Snorkeling Waimea with Whales
This March we got to go to Hawaii. In search for non-choppy snorkeling conditions, we found ourselves at Waimea Bay. Turns out that inside the bay is not a good place to find reefs, but its a great place to hear Whales! Such a wonderful experience the kids will treasure forever.

Seagrass meadows around British Isles in 'perilous state'
Most seagrass meadows around the coast of the British Isles are in a perilous state, say scientists.
Plants are being damaged by pollution and human disturbances such as mooring boats, according to researchers.
Surveys of 11 sites in England, Wales and Ireland found high nitrogen levels in water were affecting the health of seagrass meadows at all but two areas.
Seagrass, which is found in shallow waters of coastal regions, is declining globally at a rate of about 7% a year.
In the 11 areas studied, even where conditions were good, seagrass faced damage from mooring or anchoring boats, said researchers Benjamin Jones and Richard Unsworth of Cardiff and Swansea universities.
Seagrass meadows are regarded as a valuable habitat on British shores, particularly as a nursery ground for fish.

250 Ocean -- Seal Beach -- Offered at $12,500,000
Uniquely beautiful by any measure, perhaps the most captivating quality of this award-winning 7,239-square-foot, three-level custom-designed Seal Beach residence is how it unites the ancient and the new in a technologically advanced beachfront home dedicated to comfortable family living, fine arts, and the rejuvenation of body and spirit.
The soft-contemporary home features Fossil-flecked seagrass limestone floors, granite and marble in a range of delicious hues, stainless steel, copper, teak, and mahogany in the exterior and interior construction are complemented by sculptures and artifacts from Asia.
For all its artistic balance, the home -- first place winner in Residential Design & Build Magazine's 2009 prestigious Design Excellence Award for homes over 7,000 sq. ft. -- is equally attentive to every physical comfort, with a special focus on fitness and social activities.
Its main level is dedicated to an extraordinarily scenic living and dining area, a fabulously attractive and functional kitchen, and an office/library designed for focus and productivity. The upper level is devoted to bedrooms, and the lower level to recreation, casual entertainment, fitness, and therapeutic wellness.
The dining and living rooms and the master suite face the sea and Santa Catalina Island; mitered windows create open vistas from the Seal Beach pier to the Long Beach city skyline. There are full kitchens on both the main and lower levels; five bedrooms including an expansive master suite with many luxuries; seven bathrooms; two laundry rooms; a billiard room; and a plush state-of-the-art projection home theater with a 92-inch screen and fully reclining seats. A wrap-around staircase and elevator access the primary living areas of the home's three levels, plus its rooftop sundeck.
A fully equipped, temple-like exercise room has an adjacent dry cedar sauna and a steam sauna. A nearby massage room is equipped with a warmer for towels and rocks. The home's library-office has his-and-her built-in desks, a fireplace, a 500-plus-bottle wine cellar, and an adjoining Zen meditation garden.
The surfside ocean-view courtyard is a large alfresco extension of the lower level, with a completely appointed outdoor kitchen with granite counters, a heated swim-in-place lap pool and heated spa, an outdoor shower, and a custom stainless steel firebowl. Skillfully hand-laid mosaics of koi fish and sea turtles make the pool and spa works of art in themselves.
Advanced technologies increase the convenience of home's comforts as well as its security and environmental friendliness. Crestron and Lutron smart house stations located throughout let residents control everything from music, lighting, and temperature to views from night-vision-equipped security cameras. All of the home's major control points have locking gates augmented by a biometric system using a stored database of fingerprints; a simple swipe of the finger by anyone in the database gets access to the house.
A 52-panel solar system on the roof contributes significantly to the home's electrical needs. Heating is provided by a 10-zone radiant water-heated system in the floors; cooling is provided by six air conditioners. Earth-friendly artificial grass enhances the paved driveway in front of the three-car garage, which has custom aluminum and frosted glass doors that give the home an enchanting gem-like glow when backlit in the evenings.
These are some of the highlights of this fabulous home. To learn more, call Sean Stanfield of First Team Real Estate at (714) 421-3377 or visit seanstanfield.com.
