Walking through the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, in St. Augustine Florida during Christmas, 2019. This church was constructed in 1797, and it's congregation dates back to 1565. The congregation of this church is the oldest congregation in the United States, which makes sense given that St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States, also founded in 1565.

Homily: Returning to the School of Nazareth
Visit:
Preached during the parish mission at the Cathedral of St. Augustine. This is the first parish established in the United States.
The homily is focused on the need to meditate the love Saint Joseph and the Blessed Mother have for each one of us. Through the mysteries of the Rosary we enter into the “School of Nazareth” and deepen our spiritual roots so we can bear more fruit.
It was a honor to preach at the first parish established in the United States. On Sept. 8, 1565, a small band of Spaniards celebrated Mass on the shores of North Florida in preparation for starting a settlement there. They named their new home St. Augustine in honor of the saint on whose feast day they sighted land. Thus the seeds of Catholicism were first sown in what is known today as the United States and Canada.
St. Augustine is the site of the first permanent parish church – today known as the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Augustine. The famed Santa Fe Trail originated here. It was from here that Franciscan missionaries began the trek North and West to proclaim the Good News – to evangelize! It was here that the first schools and hospitals were established.
The Dominican Fr. Luís de Cancer, the proto-martyr of Florida, has a stained glass window in our Dominican church of St. Vincent Ferrer in New York City.
These and other testimonies reveal that the fama of the martyrs of Florida has never entirely vanished, and many, beginning in the late 1500s, have believed that the blood of the martyrs would be responsible for the growth of the Church in the United States.
