haunted Catholic ChurchThe turn of the 20th century was a time of prosperity for Asheville, and the world-renowned architects and artists employed by wealthy residents like George W. Vanderbilt III left a lasting mark on the city.One of the most distinctive landmarks from this time is the Basilica of Saint Lawrence, located in the heart of the historic district downtown. It was designed in 1905 by the Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino, who came to Asheville to work on Vanderbilt’s Biltmore Estate.
Guastavino fell in love with the area and decided to make the Blue Ridge Mountains home. He also decided that Asheville was in need of a grand Catholic church. With the help of the architect Richard Sharp Smith, who also worked on the Biltmore mansion, and funds raised by Catholics in the community, Guastavino built the architectural marvel that stands today. It is the only basilica in western North Carolina, topped with one of the largest freestanding elliptical domes in the United States.
The Basilica of Saint Lawrence is constructed in Guastavino’s signature Spanish Renaissance Revival style, an ancient building method from Catalonia that the Spanish architect revived and brought to America. It uses masonry materials such as stone, brick, tile, and mortar exclusively—there are no wooden beams or steel in the entire church foundation. Elements of Guastavino’s distinct style can be found in many famous landmarks, including Carnegie Hall, Grant’s Tomb, Grand Central Terminal, the U.S. Supreme Court building, the Boston Public Library, and the American Museum of Natural History.
With its unique exterior and massive dome spanning 58 feet by 82 feet, the Basilica of Saint Lawrence stands out from the surrounding buildings in downtown Asheville. But the interior is a hidden gem, teeming with religious art. Highlights include Italian-made statues, beautiful stained glass windows from Germany, and a frescoed high altar cut from Tennessee marble.
The church was opened in 1909, a year after Guastavino’s death. It was finished by his son, and Guastavino senior is interred in a crypt inside the church. The door of the crypt is another architectural marvel. Guastavino, Jr. covered the door with luster-glazed art tiles that he experimentally developed in his garage.
Nearly a century later, the significance of the work was given the ultimate recognition: It was dedicated as a basilica by the Pope in 1993.

Biltmore Estate is a large (6950.4 acres or 10.86 square miles or 28.13 square kilometers) [also noted as 5,000 acres and 8,000 acres elsewhere on this page] private estate and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina. Biltmore House, the main residence, is a Châteauesque-style mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States, at 178,926 square feet (16,622.8 m2) of floor space (135,280 square feet (12,568 m2) of living area). Still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants, it remains one of the most prominent examples of the Gilded Age.
Vanderbilt's idea was to replicate the working estates of Europe. He asked Hunt and Olmsted to design a village with architecturally compatible buildings and picturesque landscaping as a source of income through building rental, a place to help carry out philanthropic programs, and an easy point of access between the estate and the train station.The result was Biltmore Village. The village included rental cottages complete with plumbing and central heating, a post office, shops, doctor's office, school, and a church, known today as the Cathedral of All Souls.] Intending that the estate could be self-supporting, Vanderbilt set up scientific forestry programs, poultry farms, cattle farms, hog farms, and a dairy. His wife, Edith, also enthusiastically supported agricultural reform and promoted the establishment of a state agricultural fair. In 1901, the Vanderbilts provided financial assistance to Biltmore Industries, started by Biltmore Village resident Eleanor Vance, which taught young people how to make hand-carved furniture, woven baskets, homespun wool fabric, and more.
The estate today covers approximately 8,000 acres (13 sq mi; 32 km2) and is split in half by the French Broad River, overseen by The Biltmore Company, a trust set up by the family. The company is a large enterprise that is one of the largest employers in the Asheville area. Restaurants were opened in 1979 and 1987 as well as four gifts shops in 1993. The former dairy barn was converted into the popular Biltmore Winery in 1985. The AAA four-diamond 210-room Inn on Biltmore Estate opened in 2001, and in 2010, the estate debuted Antler Hill Village, as well as a remodeled winery, and connected farmyard.
Biltmore House Rooms Restored
Two rooms at the Biltmore Estate have been restored to their original 1895 glory when the home opened. The second floor living hall has housed an exhibition for the past 5 years. It's now adorned with some of the most amazing paintings in the Biltmore House collection and oversized baroque furniture. The second floor living hall will open to the public this Sunday. The second floor salon will reopen on October 1st.

Harmonic Convergence 2 Native American Peace Song and Labyrinth Walk with Grandmother Spider
During the world wide Harmonic Convergence 2 medtiations at 6pm Saturday, 9/22/2012, a large gathering of Native Americans and Light Workers celebrated raising the vibrations for Peace on the Planet as part of the Star Knowledge Conference in Asheville, NC, USA, with drumming, singing, dancing, and a Labyrinth Walk to help balance the energies on the planet and within each of us. Sha Na Ra, one of only two Ancient Mayan Crystal Skulls was surrounded by other crystals in the center of the Labyrinth during the celebration, and Grandmother Spider, sacred wisdom keeper to the Native Americans, dropped down on her thread in front of the camera lens about 2 minutes 45 seconds into the video, after I left to go walk the Labyrinth.I don't know if her message was for me or the whole world, but I'm taking her appearance in this particular video as a confirmation that the Peace vibrations being generated by Light Workers on the planet are overshadowing the darkness, and the wishes of all truly spiritual souls are being manifested.
