Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, Moscow .....a histiory
Here I present a look at the history of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Built as a result of Napoleon's retreat from Moscow, the Cathedral was a thanksgiving for Russia & the victorious Russian Army. Construction lasted for 40 years & resulted in the largest Orthodox Cathedral in the World. Following the Russian Revolution, Stalin had the Catherdral blown up to make way for the Palace of Soviets, a skyscraper to Socialism & the memory of Lenin. Only the foundations were built by the time Hitler invaded Russia in 1941. Work ceased & following victory in 1945, the foundations were turned into an open-air pool. I actually swam there in 1966...... In 1994, the pool was closed and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour rose again. This time taking a mere fraction of the time to build. This is the story........

Russia: Patriarch Kirill leads Easter service at Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
Head of the Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill addressed the nation and led the Easter service at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow on Saturday.
SOT, Patriarch Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia (Russian): Dear brothers and sisters, I cordially congratulate you all on the great holiday, with the holy Easter, on the Christ Resurrection. The saviour’s resurrection is the greatest event in human history. And here is why. Because on Sunday the Lord overcame evil, defeated the devil. And although, as we know, evil exists in the world, but it is not capable of dominating the whole human race. By the power of God's grace people are able to resist evil.

Very rare! Destruction of the Christ the Savior Cathedral, 1931
Revolting plans, terrible fights against religion, churches shut and blocked, priesthood massacre. Barbarous cruelty of Soviet authorities and J. Stalin.
Alternative opinion: the country needed to make a leap into industrial age. Prejudice and brakes had to be removed. The authorities had to give the population an incentive to work, whereas the religion was an archaic remainder of the tsar age. The elimination of illusions and sheer realism—that's what the late-blooming country needed to catch up with the strongest European countries.
Wikipedia says:
On 5 December 1931, by order of Stalin's minister Kaganovich, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was dynamited and reduced to rubble. It took more than one blast to destroy the church and more than a year to clear the debris from the site. The original marble high reliefs were preserved and are now on display at the Donskoy Monastery (see the photo). For a long time, they were the only reminder of the largest Orthodox church ever built.

Christ the Savior Cathedral: the destruction and restoration
Eighty years ago, on December 5, 1931, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow was destroyed by the Bolsheviks. It was built more than half a century after Russia's 1812 victory over the French, and was in use for about the same length of time. Under the Soviets, this cathedral, Russia's largest, was destroyed in just one day. In its place, they planned to build a Palace of Soviets. After the Second World War, they built an outdoor swimming pool on the site of the cathedral. Donations funded its rebuilding in the late 20th century. See also:
