Jaca is a city of northeastern Spain in the province of Huesca, located near the Pyrenees and the border with France. Jaca is an ancient fort on the Aragón River, situated at the crossing of two great early medieval routes, one from Pau to Zaragoza. Jaca was the city out of which the County and Kingdom of Aragon developed Jaca was the capital of Aragon until 1097 and also the capital of Jacetania.
Besides Jaca town, there are a number of outlying villages in Jaca's municipality, including the ski resort of Astún. Jaca is a tourist destination in the region for summer holidays and winter sports. Starting in the early 1970s, Jaca was transformed from being a small provincial and garrison town to become the gateway to a mid-tier mountain sports area with two major winter resorts (Valle de Astun and Candanchu) within a 30 km drive of Jaca . The accompanying urban and infrastructure development in the 1970s and 1980s was controversial, with many claiming that Jaca lost a lot of its original charm and authenticity to the interests of developers.
The development experienced by Jaca , with the construction of a nationally known ice-skating rink (the Pista de Hielo del Pirineo), a small convention centre (the Palacio de Congresos) and countless second residences had a profound impact on the economy of the Valley (Valle del Aragon), where many of its inhabitants evolved from small-scale subsistence farmera in Jaca and the surrounding villages, to become part of a tertiary economy. Jaca was the host city of the 1981 and 1995 Winter Universiades. The city also hosted the 2007 European Youth Olympic Winter Festival. Its popularity for winter sports has been a motivating factor in the city's failed bids for the 1998 Winter Olympics, 2002 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Olympics. Jaca was again the applicant city of Spain for the 2014 Winter Olympics, but the bid failed again when it was not selected as a candidate city.
Jaca boasts several medieval walls and towers surrounding the 11th-century Romanesque Jaca Cathedral. The Jaca citadel, a fortification dating to the late 16th century, is home to a colony of rock sparrows. The Diocesan Museum of Jaca (Museum of Medieval Sacred Art) protects Romanesque and Gothic frescoes, some of which were found in the most remote locations in the Jaca district.

This was probably the highlight of my trip! Here in this incredible mountain monastery high in the mountain ridges near Jaca Spain, along the Aragonese route of the Camino de Santiago, is San Juan de la Peña monastery where the Grail of history became the Grail of legend. Here the simple stone cup that is the actual relic from the time of Christ was made into the gold and jewel encrusted chalice we might identify as the Holy Grail.

La ciudad de Jaca recibe fueros de ciudad, por el rey Sancho Ramírez de Aragón, en 1077, ostentando la capitalidad del reino entre este año y 1096 y convirtiéndose en sede diocesana, lo que hace necesaria la construcción de una catedral. Si bien las fechas de la construcción no están claras, se pueden distinguir en ella dos etapas. Una primera, podría estar situada entre 1077 y 1082 que corresponde al reinado de Sancho Ramírez y el obispado de su hermano, el infante García; y una segunda entre 1104 y 1130, que es corresponde con el reinado de Alfonso I el Batallador y Esteban de Huesca como obispo.

Cathedrals in Spain are magnificent! It is not easy to decide what to include in the list of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain.
Some can decide easily by stating that the great Spanish cathedrals classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, such as cathedrals of Burgo, Santiago de Compostela, or Córdoba, are the most beautiful. But for others, deciding is more difficult.
Churches and cathedrals are important part the country’s history and architectural heritage. They attract many tourists into the country on yearly basis.
There is even no consensus on how to determine what is the oldest cathedral in Spain? The one in Jaca in the Pyrenees, with its Romanesque parts of the twelfth century? Or would it be the Basilica of Foz in Galicia, which is not really a cathedral? Or is it the Córdoba Cathedral, which is probably the oldest, but not really a church, as it was a mosque up to the 13th century?
There are altogether more than 90 cathedrals and religious buildings in Spain. Each of them is an impressive building in its own way.

La luz y el misterio de las Catedrales. Jaca.
Serie de televisión presentada por el arquitecto y dibujante José María Pérez Peridis, coproducida por Fundación Santa María la Real y TVE, con el patrocinio de Fundación Endesa y la colaboración de Paradores Nacionales. La serie realiza un recorrido por siete de las seos más importantes y destacadas de nuestro país: Burgos, Oviedo, Santiago de Compostela, Cuenca, Lérida, Barcelona y Jaca.
Este capítulo está dedicado a la catedral de San Pedro de Jaca. Un edificio que, pese a las reformas, sigue manteniendo en gran medida su origen románico. En su recorrido, irá descubriendo la seo y viendo la importancia que adquiere la decoración escultórica, atribuida al Maestro de Jaca. José María Pérez estará acompañado por el historiador Domingo Buesa, integrante de la asociación Amigos del Serrablo, quien lleva más de 40 años trabajando por la restauración y conservación del patrimonio de la comarca. Junto a él, Belén Luque, gerente del Museo Diocesano, que conserva una de las colecciones de murales románicos más importantes de España.
El recorrido por el museo servirá para descubrir la gran importancia que durante el románico y épocas posteriores se dio a la pintura mural. De hecho, casi todos los templos estaban policromados, puesto que la pintura era una forma de decorar y vestir los edificios, pero también una herramienta para aleccionar a los fieles, trasladarles conceptos sobre el bien y el mal, el pecado y la salvación.
Para cerrar la visita al museo y entender mejor el significado de las colecciones que allí se custodían, Peridis charlará con el ilustrador y dibujante cántabro, Chema Román. A través de su mirada, podremos comprobar cómo los murales medievales, no han perdido un ápice de actualidad y sus trazos, colores y técnicas, siguen recordando a las que actualmente utilizan los graffiteros urbanos.

The Cathedral of Santa María Magdalena is the cathedral of the city of Getafe and headquarters of the Diocese of Getafe (Community of Madrid, Spain). The church is located in the Centro de Getafe neighborhood, specifically in the Plaza de La Magdalena. Its architects were Alonso de Covarrubias and Juan Gómez de Mora. It began its construction in 1549 and was completed in 1770. The predominant styles are the Renaissance, the Baroque and the Mudéjar of its tower, corresponding to a previous temple. It is considered one of the best examples of Renaissance architecture in the Community of Madrid.

The SI Cathedral of Badajoz (or Cathedral of San Juan Bautista), which has metropolitan rank, is located in the Plaza de España, in the center of Badajoz (Spain). It is the seat of the archbishops of Extremadura, forming the archdiocese Mérida-Badajoz.2 It is also, together with the cathedrals of Coria and Plasencia, founding partner of the Association of Cathedral Cities, to which fifteen other Spanish cathedrals belong.

The cathedral of Santa María de Tuy is located in the province of Pontevedra, at its southern end, in the city of Tuy, through which the Miño river passes. Since 1959 it belongs to the Diocese of Tuy-Vigo. The cathedral is the maximum artistic exponent of the city of Tuy, is located in the highest part of the city in a fort (Tude) on a hill. Its construction began in 1120 and was completed in 1180 in full style of Romanesque architecture, as it happens in most of the cathedrals, had important reforms in other times mainly in Gothic style that among other things was made the main facade dated approximately year 1225.

The cathedral of Mondoñedo is, together with the Ferrol concatedral, one of the episcopal sees of the diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol, in Galicia (Spain). It receives the nickname of the 'Cathedral kneeling' for its perfect proportions and low height. It was declared a National Monument in 1902. Pope John XXIII, through a bull dated March 9, 1959, named it a basilica. In its interior is the cathedral and diocesan museum 'Santos San Cristóbal', founded in 1969, which has important works of religious art, being one of the most important in Galicia in its genre.

Initially, it was opened to Christian worship after its sacralization maintaining its structure as a mosque. It has the rank of concathedral of the diocese of Guadix-Baza.
