Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurter Dom), or Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew (Kaiserdom Sankt Bartholomäus) is a Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.
Frankfurt Cathedral is the largest religious building in the city and a former collegiate church. Despite its common English name, it has never been a true cathedral, but is called the Kaiserdom (an imperial great church or imperial cathedral) or simply the Dom due to its importance as former election and coronation church of the Holy Roman Empire. As one of the major buildings of the Empire's history, it was a symbol of national unity, especially in the 19th century.
THe Frankfurt Cathedral building is the 3rd church on the same site. Since the late 19th century, excavations have revealed buildings that can be traced back to the 7th century. The history is closely linked with the general history of Frankfurt and Frankfurt's old town because the cathedral had an associated role as the religious counterpart of the Royal Palace in Frankfurt.

The present-day church is the fifth structure known to have existed at this location since a Merovingian chapel was first built in this location in 680. During World War II, between October 1943 and March 1944, the old town of Frankfurt, the biggest old Gothic town in Central Europe, was devastated by six bombardments of the Allied Air Forces. The greatest losses occurred in an attack by the Royal Air Force on 22 March 1944, when more than a thousand buildings of the old town, most of them half-timbered houses, were destroyed. St. Bartholomew's suffered severe damage; the interior was burned out completely. The building was reconstructed in the 1950s. The height of the spire is 95 metres.
Frankfurt, a central German city on the river Main, is a major financial hub that's home to the European Central Bank. It's the birthplace of famed writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose former home is now the Goethe House Museum. Like much of the city, it was damaged during World War II and later rebuilt. The reconstructed Altstadt (Old Town) is the site of Römerberg, a square that hosts an annual Christmas market.

Römer (City Hall) – Frankfurt, Germany (Frankfurt am Main)

One of the MUST-SEE places in Frankfurt, Germany is Römer (City Hall). Coz it is one of the city’s most important landmarks filled with history and significance. Our private tour guide told us that the Römer is located opposite to the Old St. Nicholas church and has been the city hall of Frankfurt for over 600 years!!!

The unique architecture, colourful frontage of the buildings, the water fountain located in the centre of the open space, this whole town hall square is just so interesting. For people such as myself, it’s just mind blowing how well-maintained these buildings are being preserved to allow us to witness these historical buildings right in front of our eyes. During our visit that day, we saw a happy couple getting married at the Römer. And to no surprise, our tour guide informed us that it’s a long waiting list to being wed at this city hall.


Our tour guide told me that this water fountain has lots of history but most interesting story is that, each year, they will clear our the water and filled it with wine. I hope I can experience drinking lots of wine from this fountain in the near future. I will be back!

FRANKFURT KAISERDOM - CATEDRAL IMPERIAL FRANCFORT

La torre gótica de la Catedral de Frankfurt domina el paisaje del casco antiguo de la ciudad. Aunque en sentido estricto no es una catedral, ya que no es sede episcopal, la parroquia fundada en el año 852 y consagrada a San Bartolomé en 1239 recibió el título honorífico de Iglesia Imperial en el siglo XVIII. Desde entonces ha sido el escenario de 10 coronaciones imperiales.

Entre los tesoros de la catedral se encuentran el friso de San Bartolomé del siglo XV, muebles de mediados del siglo XIV, el Altar de la Dormición de Santa María creado en 1434 y la Crucifixión de principios del siglo XVI.

Su torre gótica de 96 metros de alto se terminó recién en el curso de la restauración emprendida luego del gran incendio de 1867, momento en que se perdieron varias campanas históricas, fundidas en el fuego. Quien logre ascender los 324 escalones hasta lo alto de la torre se verá recompensado con una maravillosa vista panorámica, aunque este placer es posible sólo muy de vez en cuando, a causa de los trabajos de renovación.
