STORYLINE
The leader of Russia's Roman Catholics called on Friday for Catholics to pray for Pope John Paul II.
Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz told the faithful gathered in Moscow's Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception that the 84-year-old
pontiff's health dramatically worsened on Thursday evening.
At a mass held to pray for John Paul, the Archbishop called on Catholics in Russia to offer their prayers for the pope's life.
Tensions have increased markedly between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and communist restrictions on religion faded.
The Russian Orthodox leadership has accused Catholics of poaching converts in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.
The dispute has blocked a papal visit to Russia, a long-held wish of the Polish-born pontiff.
Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II, himself hospitalised last August for what he said was heart arrhythmia, wished John Paul a swift recovery a month ago.
There are an estimated 600-thousand Catholics in Russia.
The pope suffered heart failure during treatment for a urinary tract infection and was in very serious condition on Friday, the Vatican said.
It denied an Italian news report that the pope was in a coma.
