STORYLINE
Christians in Russia and Georgia are celebrating this Sunday as Catholics and Protestants mark Easter Sunday, while Orthodox Christians mark Palm Sunday.
In the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, Orthodox Christians gathered at the Holy Trinity Cathedral for Palm Sunday Mass, held by Georgian Patriarch Ilia II.
Palm Sunday celebrates the believed entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, where he was greeted by crowds waving palm tree branches.
In Georgia, the faithful instead waved branches from the boxwood tree to symbolise the palm tree branches.
Georgia is one of the oldest Christian countries in the world, after adopting Christianity in 4th century.
Meanwhile, in the Russian capital, more than a thousand Catholic Christians gathered in the Moscow Immaculate Conception Cathedral for Easter Sunday Mass.
Priests sprinkled holy water on churchgoers and gave communion to believers attending the service.
Father Sergey Timahov, the vicar general of the Archdiocese of Mother of God at Moscow, led the sermon in the cathedral and congratulated the worshippers on resurrection of Christ.
Sister Irina, a nun from the cathedral, said she was excited that it was Easter Sunday.
I feel a thrill, happiness and revival of spirit. Because, although there is snow outside, there is spring in the soul, she said, clutching a basket of brightly decorated Easter eggs.
There are about 750-thousand Catholic believers in Russia.
The largest Christian denomination in the country is the Russian Orthodox Church, which will celebrate Easter a week later on April 15.

With freezing temperatures dropping as low as minus 26 degrees Celsius at night, homeless people are some of the most vulnerable in Russia's capital Moscow.
Some of those in need go to an Orthodox church where hot food is provided by a group of volunteers.
It is usually a bowl soup with rolls and a cup of hot tea.
Valery, one of the volunteers, said the the cold weather usually brings more homeless people to their food facility.
At any other time of the year, on the other days everything is different, he said.
Our cooks cook very well, so everybody is always satisfied, he added.
There have been a number of deaths throughout Russia recently, due the freezing temperatures.
Since temperatures plunged below minus 18 degrees Celsius in Moscow and minus 50 degrees in Siberia, local media has reported that more than 50 people have died from weather-related illnesses.
During the cold snap, 722 people have been injured, 371 have been hospitalised and 56 have died, RIA-Novosti reported, citing hypothermia and frostbite as among the most common weather-related illnesses.
The Emergency Situations Ministry issued warnings to residents of 15 Russian regions, including Kamchatka, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Irkutsk and the Khanty-Mansiisk autonomous district, where the cold has also disrupted energy supplies.
Freezing temperatures are said to have even affected typically warm regions.

Russia - Floating church
T/I: 10:17:46
Russia may be on the brink of economic disaster but a group of Orthodox Russian priests is making sure people's spiritual needs are taken care of. 28 Russian Orthodox missionaries are making a spiritual journey by boat to the remotest villages of Siberia. In these settlements lining the forested banks of the river Ob, more than 2,000 kilometres east of Moscow, villagers are paid in hay and roof slates rather than roubles.
The missionaries' floating church, specially sanctioned for the purpose, stops at Siberia's most inaccessible villages where the priests distribute essentials such as food, clothing and medicine as well as providing for the villagers spiritual needs.

The leader of Russia's Roman Catholics called on Friday for Catholics to pray for Pope John Paul II.
Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz told the faithful gathered in Moscow's Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception that the 84-year-old
pontiff's health dramatically worsened on Thursday evening.
At a mass held to pray for John Paul, the Archbishop called on Catholics in Russia to offer their prayers for the pope's life.
Tensions have increased markedly between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and communist restrictions on religion faded.
The Russian Orthodox leadership has accused Catholics of poaching converts in Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union.
The dispute has blocked a papal visit to Russia, a long-held wish of the Polish-born pontiff.
Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexy II, himself hospitalised last August for what he said was heart arrhythmia, wished John Paul a swift recovery a month ago.
There are an estimated 600-thousand Catholics in Russia.
The pope suffered heart failure during treatment for a urinary tract infection and was in very serious condition on Friday, the Vatican said.
It denied an Italian news report that the pope was in a coma.

Catholics gather for pope's mass in Rabat
(31 Mar 2019) Organisers say some 10,000 people are attending Pope Francis' public Mass in Morocco, most of them foreigners representing about 60 countries.
The liturgy held in a sports arena in Morocco's capital of Rabat on Sunday was the final event on the schedule for the pope's two-day visit.
Nora Moso is originally from the Philippines and works in Casablanca as a nanny.
She said she was grateful her employer gave her the day off for her birthday, so she could attend the Mass.
Diego Sanchez lives in Ceuta, the Spanish enclave in North Africa that is a destination of migrants who pour into Morocco hoping to find a way to Europe.
Sanchez says he thinks Catholicism is multiracial and universal.
We have people from European origins, we have people from Arab origins, we have people from African, sub-Saharan origins so we are very happy, he said.

From March 4-6, 2009 altogether 19 Bishops from various countries have visited the ITI (International Theological Institute) in Gaming, Austria. 150 Attendees listened attentively while the Bishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches did discuss on the Symposium The Mission of the Eastern Catholic Churches in the Life of the Universal Church and for the Modern World.
The Consensus was, that the Eastern Catholic Churches are aware of their role as bridge builders helping to connect Orthodox Christians with Roman Catholics through Dialogue and a deeper understandig.
This certainly is a continuous challenge as the Eastern Catholic Churches are often seen by their Orthodox brothers as betrayers and by Roman Catholics as strangely different.
The Eastern Catholic Churches do acknowledge the Pope of Rome as the head of their Church, at the same time they cherish their Orthodox traditions, which manifests especially in the colorful Byzantine Liturgy, the Jesus Prayer (Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me) and many other details like accepting married priests etc.
One Bishop said on the Symposium at the ITI in Gaming: it is good to know the differences between the Churches. But isnt it the most essential to follow the footseps of Christ, seeking to life according to the Gospel? What testimony can be greater than LOVE? If we learn to love each other and learn to love even our enemies, then Jesus Christ will truly live in our hearts. Like this we will give the greatest testimony to the world.
Wont enemies eventually cease to exist, if your love conquers their heart? Think about it.
