Cave Creek Canyon, AZ
Cave Creek Canyon is located on the east side of the Chiricahua Mountains of Southeastern Arizona. With the base of the Chiricahuas at about 3,600 feet (1,100 m), the range includes approximately 6,000 feet (1,800 m) of elevation change.
Grasslands and desert cover the base of the range, with Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, and Engelmann Spruce at the higher elevations.
Wrapped around the perennially flowing Cave Creek (underground in late May and June), Cave Creek Canyon is considered by many to be the crown jewel of this magnificent mountain range. It is the largest and most biologically diverse canyon in the Chiricahua Mountains. It’s a favorite haunt of bird watchers and nature lovers, and is the home of the American Museum of Natural History’s Southwestern Research Station. The small community of Portal is at the mouth of the canyon, at the beginning of the spectacular rhyolite cliffs formed by ash and magma deposits from volcanic activity millions of years ago.

Mountain biking Maricopa trail, Cave creek, AZ
Got the prime locals tour of the Maricopa trail from Kaolin Cummens and Dax Massey. Supper fun trail lots of up and down a bit primitive in places but I like that. Along with all the various cacti that are out to get you in this neck of the woods I was also introduced to cat claw, it happened to be overgrown on this day from rain and it had us all bloody by the end of the ride.

While camping in Cave Creek at the Sunny Flat campground we hiked to Silver Peak. Although we didn't make it to the top, we were close and will return someday to complete the task.

Speed limit is 25 MPH max and some fool came up behind me at a high rate of speed and got on my rear bumber. Sorry about letting the foul word slip out. Hiking to the summit of Silver Peak, Portal, Arizona January 19, 2018
Some scenes from our, two Norwegians, hike up the Silver Peak trail to the summit at 7973 feet (2430 meter). The trail to the top and return has a lenght of 9,1 mile (14,6 kilometers) and is rather easy to walk, but still quite exhausting...going up, up, up...It sure gave me a wake up call concerning the need to start exercising more! I didn't want to give up and, as usual, the will to reach my goal overpowered my physical strength :) Luckily, the nice weather and the temperature in January, down to freezing in some shadowy areas high up, were ideal to hike in. - We got paid well upon reaching the summit after some four hours (I believe around three hours are averagely used by hikers going up), with a fantastic 360 degree view over the Chiracahua mountain range. Return down was more rapid; less than two hours...
This was my friend Jens's fourth trip to Silver Peak; having been in Arizona and the Portal area some 40 times during the past four decades. Whereas it was my first walk to this summit after visiting Arizona (including) Portal) five times since 1969.

Trying to make it up Indian Creek, Chiricahua Mountains, southeastern Arizona
Day 8 of the first leg of our Mexico-to-Canada horse pack trip. We were trying to make it up Indian Creek from Whitetail Canyon, but the trail had been washed out. We made it about 3 miles up the canyon before having to turn around and head back out. The trail ended up becoming impassable for horses about 1000' before the canyon opens up where the trailhead we were trying to reach is. It was a rough ride, but I was sure proud of my Missouri Fox Trotter, who kept right up with a mule that I'm pretty sure was half-mountain goat!
