The Blue Lake is a large, crater lake located in a dormant volcanic maar in the Mount Gambier. The main attraction with Blue Lake is its color change.

It is also known, as The Sunken Garden was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone.

Cave Garden is a beautiful sinkhole garden to visit if you like nature. The sinkhole was the original water source for the early settlers in this area.

MOUNT GAMBIER CAVE GARDENS
Mount Gambier is located in the South East of South Australia. It is situated at the edge of a volcanic complex and above what was once a shallow sea thereby creating a rocky limestone. Much of this limestone has been used for building houses throughout the region.In some places caves have been formed in the limestone and the roofs of some of these caves have collapsed forming what is known as a sinkhole.The Mount gambier Cave Gardens is one of these collapsed sinkholes. It has been beautified by the local council and many other people and is a delight to visit.

Waking up in Mac’s hotel in the very center of Mt. Gambier and taking a walk to find a cozy place for breakfast set us off to a good start of a new day. We have visited the Cave Garden, Umpherstone Sinkhole (sunken garden with viewing platforms and benches and possums roaming around) and a beautiful crater lake which turns very very blue during the winter (Australian summer) months. After that we were back on the road stopping at Bridgewater Blowholes offering a lovely scenic view and then making it directly to Warrnambool which stands almost at the beginning (or the end) of the Great Ocean Road. There we visited a Tourist Information Center where 2 lovely ladies told us all there is to know about the GOR, which spots not to miss and which will only require a quick look, what time it is better to head out in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds. They also said that widely-advertised 12 Apostoles might just be not as beautiful as the Bay of Islands which would be the closest scenic spot on the road from Warrnambool. They actually said we might be better off starting from here than we would be from Melbourne and Torquay. We have decided not to miss a chance to see a sunset at the Bay of Islands which they spoke highly of and went straight there and were not disappointed…almost nobody there, fantastic views and a magnificent sunset are what we have found there.

Nearby, the Centenary Tower offers panoramic views of the area. The Umpherston Sinkhole contains a lush sunken garden. The Lady Nelson Visitor Centre houses a full-size replica of a late-18th-century ship.
