Virtual Hike: Mesa Arch Trail in Canyonlands National Park, Utah
Mesa Arch is one of the most iconic sights in all on Canyonlands National Park. Located near Moab, Utah, Canyonlands is a very close neighbor to Arches National Park (located across town). Being so close, the two parks make a great weekend trip for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts looking to take in some of Utah's most breathtaking vistas and stunning red rock formations.
Join Chimani for the first in a series of Virtual Hikes. The virtual hike of Mesa Arch Trail to the arch is a three-minute sample of the terrain, environment, and overall landscape that one can expect to encounter when setting out from the parking lot.
The trail itself a relatively easy hike. With a few moderate inclines and man-made steps, the half-mile hike can be done in a half-hour or less, but it is not to be rushed. Along the well-maintained trail are a variety of trees, plants, and cacti to stop and enjoy.
The suspense increases along the hike as the trail seems to intentionally hide Mesa Arch from view until the final few feet. The stunning formation comes into view with a seemingly never-ending backdrop of red rock canyons, pillars, cliffs, and mountains.
It was mid-afternoon when the Chimani team visited Mesa Arch in the video, however it is uncommon for there to be this few people on the trail or at the arch. On this day, temperatures were extremely high, keeping most visitors near their vehicles, park facilities, and shorter trails. On a typical day, one should plan to hike to Mesa Arch earlier in the morning or towards the evening to avoid crowds, although sunrise and sunset are popular times to visit.

The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area is a 44,724-acre National Conservation Area located in southwest Utah near St. George at the northeastern-most edge of the Mojave Desert. To get to this hike, take the exit 22 (Leeds) off I-15, just north of Hurricane Utah.

The White Rim Road is a 71.2-mile-long (114.6 km) unpaved four-wheel drive road that traverses the top of the White Rim Sandstone formation below the Island in the Sky mesa of Canyonlands National Park in southern Utah in the United States.
The road was constructed in the 1950s by the Atomic Energy Commission to provide access for individual prospectors intent on mining uranium deposits for use in nuclear weapons production during the Cold War. Large deposits had been found in similar areas within the region; however, the mines along the White Rim Road produced very little uranium and all the mines were abandoned.
The road surface consists of loose dirt, sandy dry washes and sandstone rock formations. Four-wheel drive vehicles and mountain bikes are the most common modes of transport though horseback riding and hiking are also permitted. Typical excursions at a modest pace take two days by four-wheel drive vehicle and three days by mountain bike. Street-legal, registered motorbikes are also permitted to travel on the road. The National Park Service (NPS), which administers the park and maintains the road, recommends bicyclists have a motorized support vehicle to carry extra water. No potable water is available anywhere along the road and there are few river access points. The Green River is accessible at spots along the western end of the road but Lathrop Canyon is the only access point to the Colorado River near the eastern terminus. Hikers may access the White Rim from the Island in the Sky by hiking down steep trails leading to seven points along the road.
Roads leading to the White Rim Road are Mineral Bottom Road, also called Horsethief Trail, in the park's west side and Shafer Trail in the park's east side. Both roads are junctions off the Island in the Sky park road, which is an extension of Utah State Route 313. A shorter alternate from Moab is Potash Road—Utah State Route 279—in the east side of the park which connects at the junction of White Rim Road with Shafer Trail.

Lost Canyon Hike and Trail Guide - Canyonlands National Park - Needles District
The Lost Canyon Trail in Canyonlands National park from the junction with Squaw Canyon to the Squaw Flats trailhead. Not my favorite of the canyons in the area. Walls were close and you couldn't see too much, however once out of Lost Canyon things opened up and there were some very beautiful areas.
Canyonlands NP - Mineral bottom switchbacks (4K)
Mineral bottom Canyon Rd Switchbacks to the green river also the start of the White Rim RD 4WD Trail.
Mineral Bottom is a 16 miles trail, located in Grand County, Utah (USA), driveable all year round. On August 19th, 2010, severe storms caused flash flooding and rock falls that blocked or washed away roads throughout the Canyonlands area. There is little room for error on this road. It's normal for your palms to sweat looking at those photos.
Suitable for high-clearance two-wheel-drive vehicles when dry, the unpaved sections of the road can be impassable when wet. In any case, driving 4WD is recommended due to uneven surface. When is wet, the road can be impassable, especially on the switchbacks that descend into the river valley. Avoid this road if it's wet. If it rains while you’re at the bottom, wait an hour or two until the road dries. Route-finding is extremely easy.
The road is in dreadful condition and requires strong nerves to negotiate it. It's a wide county road that drops rapidly to the Green River on spectacular switchbacks to a pleasant drive along the river’s edge. Mineral Bottom road provides access to the western half of the White Rim Trail inside Canyonlands National Park.

After a long drive from Flagstaff, Arizona, we ended day 7 of our road trip around the southwest with a stop at Big Spring Canyon Overlook in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. This was the first stop of our 36 hours in Moab, Utah.
While The Needles District of the park only draws about 20% of the total park visitors, it was our favorite of the two districts we visited while in town (the other being Island in the Sky).

I went through Utah in July 2015, and visited all 5 of its National Parks. All of the parks were unique and amazing...
But this place especially, combined with the weather, was the most memorable time of my 5-week multi-state road trip.

Salt Creek Pictographs in the Needles District at Canyonlands, Utah
Salt Creek is located in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park in Utah.
The Park Service provided this description, Ancestral Puebloan Indians painted these white dots and shield figures sometime during their occupation of Salt Creek (AD 1,000 - 1,300). Faintly visible behind them are reddish figures from the earlier Archaic Period (1,000 - 3,000 BC). While recognizable shapes such as dots, horned animals, and human figures are present, the meaning of these images has been lost. These pictorgraphs have lasted for many centuries.

Canyonlands National Park is divided into three districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles and The Maze. This hike is in The Needles district, about one hour twenty South of Moab, UT. While Island in the Sky has amazing views on canyons, The Needles is a paradise for hikers with trails for short and long day hikes as well as overnight trips. This hike was about 6 miles. Beneath Druid Arch in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park in Utah
Druid Arch is located on the rim above Elephant Canyon in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.
At 137 metres (450 feet) high, Druid Arch is freestanding and projects outwards at right angles from the Cedar Mesa sandstone cliffs. The base of the arch is at an elevation at a general elevation of 1,757 metres (5,765). The formation is named because of the resemblance to Stonehenge in England, a place long associated with druids.

My video from an awesome 11 mile day hike to druid arch in the needles district of canyonlands national park in southeastern Utah. This hike features beautiful views of open desert, the la Sal mountains, a fun trek through elephant canyon and a fun rock scramble. This hike took me about 5.5 hours. Enjoy!
